I own an 87 honda gl1200 interstate. I just bought it about a week ago and had it to the shop for safety check and to bleed the brakes and clutch. So anyway I park her in the garage last night and she started beautifully. This morning I went out to go to work and nothing. No lights, no power, i hooked a charger to her and tried immediately to start it to see what she would do and the needles on the rpm gauge worked or I should say shot up to 5 and I got a humming sound when I tried the starter. Anyone have any ideas? I'm stuck at work till tonight soi I haven't tried anything yet, but she's been starting fine. I will say the bike idles a little low, but nothing to be concerned about. Thank you. Attachment: 44663_147749531917068_100000460675256_346821_485597_n.jpg (Downloaded 132 times)

Welcome to the Site Ray! I'd start off with the basic's and first, make sure you've got a good battery and that it's fully charged. Second, make sure you don't have any current draw when the bike is turned off. The 2 "Fuelie" GL1200's are the only one's that I know of that have a "parasitic" drain on the battery when the bike is turned off. Check the interior trunk light. I just killed a battery because the tab that depresses the switch to turn the light off when the lid is closed was bent down a bit. If the light is turned on, your problem might be as simple as that! Smarter Members than me will be along shortly....

First, you need to determine whether the battery is the problem, or if there is another problem somewhere else. If you are seeing absolutely 0 volts, it's probably a fuse - likely the dogbone master fuse (under the cover of the starter solenoid), which is particularly susceptible to mechanical vibration failure. It could also be a loose battery terminal.

Thanks alot guys for the info. I did notice that one of the terminals moved so it may just be loose. I'll definately check the other things you mentioned as well, I didn't even know it had a trunk lid. This is my first 87 I've usually owned 84's. Anyway I'll post when I figure it out, just didn't have any time this morning and made me sad...I had my vest on and everything....sigh...oh well I still love the bike. Paid only a grand for her so I have alot of room to fix her up. Thanks again fellow wing riders

It's possible that you left the park lights on killing the battery. I did that half a dozen times when I first got my Wing, I'd get to work, park the bike, turn the key to lock the steering, pull the key, walk away and return at the end of the day to a dead bike. If you left the charger on it it will probably start when you get home.

The clock and radio memory will kill the battery in about two to three weeks... but not overnight of course. The Interstates and ASpencades do not have trunk illumination unless added by an owner. Thanks Tricky, I don't have a radio or a clock so that can't be it. I"m thinking its something simple like a bad battery. I have no idea how long the bike sat before I got her, I just know the tags were good and she started and ran pretty good. So like I said thank you and I"ll be checking it out when I get home. THanks

Without cranking the bike, a fully charged new lead acid in mine will last about 4 week's with the draw from the Travel Computer plus what you mentioned. Can you measure the amperage draw on your's so we have a baseline drain on the Aspy? Thanks and I appreciate the info! But then again.... Ray's problem is with an '87 Interstate... Do you have any info on that?

There are two screws, on on each side, under the mirror rubbor. You also need to take these out to get at the windshield.

For the windshield, yes you remove the front garnish plate but to do so you'll have to loosen both mirrors and remove the bolts bolts that go through the plate.

The garnish trim is held on by clips too if memory serves me. Ya gotta kinda give it an upward jerk. On the power loss, I'm wondering if the PO let it go with a questionable battery. Unimaginable I know but it's been known to happen.

Yeah I thought maybe the battery has a bad cell. Not sure. The guy was really nice and the tags were current so I can't imagine it sat for very long. I'll figure it out. And thanks for the information on my winshield that helps. Sunday is gonna be bike day so I"ll get it running again. Thanks alot guys and yes I"ll fix my profile....had an 1100 last year but now loving my 1200. Its a beautiful machine.

Because the one that's one there was so scratched from someone trying to restore it that I can't even see out of it. Already got a brand new clear one, just have to put it on. Otherwise I'd leave it but really, its horrible and makes the bike look bad too.

Just a quick thank you guys for all the help. I proud to say My bike is up and running with just a new battery. New windshield is on and makes the bike look so much better and I rode her to work this morning and wanted to keep going to yosemite. Soon enough maybe this weekend. Thanks again to all those who kicked in their thoughts and opinions, it really did help. Ride Safe

Glad to hear it. We can relate on the Yosemite thing. It's a wonder I come back sometimes but I'm pretty sure at least the dog misses me when I'm gone. I don't know if this is your first goldwing but be warned, they tend to take hold of ya.

No she would be my fourth or fifth goldwing. Started riding them in the early 80s and fell in love back then. I think I owned a shadow in the middle somewhere but nothing like a Goldwing as everyone here knows. I picked this one up for a grand and have put about 350.00 into it so far...not to bad. Thanks again and yeah Dogs are way better than most people I'll have to agree. Take care
