Hey there everyone.
I am at my wits end. When I took apart my forks the ring plate and backer ring was missing. I ordered them and when i went to put them in they covered up the snap ring grove. I know everything is driven hoe and i know i have the right parts. Should i just put it back together the way it was without the backer plate and ring? Has anyone ever run into this before? Is it possible they used 79 1000 lowers?
I am stumped.
Thanks for you help
Geo

You have to have the stop ring below the seal. otherwise the bushing can be driven up through the seal. It should be installed with the lip on the outside up toward the seal. Be sure the bushing is all the way flush with the top of the slider. The top ring I don't think is absolutely necessary. I had 1 that the seal would not go into far enough to put the ring on and let the snap ring fit, it never gave any problem.
The GL1000 lowers will not fit 1100 fork tubes.

OK, the OEM Honda part they sent me is more like a thick flat washer. When I install it under the seal, I cant even see the snap ring grove, when its driven home. I have tried every combination, and the only one that works is to leave it out, just like I found it. Any other thoughts?
Thanks

Perhaps someone with the exploded view could put it on here for part identification?

Good work RB.......better then the manual. I have not gone that far into the forks and this is a great view of the parts for my own upcoming rebuild.

Is this configuration standard in forks of this time period......or do they change from year to year?

just did one fork seal on the 80gl this morning, yeah the new seat is thicker but it fit fine Honda discontinued the thinner dished type probably because they are a bit weaker and bend who knows, i did mess up interchanging the top fork tubes put the left tube on the right lower tube didn't want to do that as i didn't change the bushings hope it works out and not accelerate the bushing wear? will do the other tube later today

RB, Thanks for the pic. Its just what i need. I was wondering if you could take a pic of that cupped washer from the side?
I wonder now if mine is stuck in the tube. I see now that the washer is the replacement for the cupped washer, as mentioned.
Thanks everyone for your help.
I will try and get some pics up tonight of what i have.
Thanks Again
Geo

Hey all.
No matter what I did the backer ring and backer plate would not fit in the tube.
So I put it back together the way I found it, put new bushings and seals in of course. It was like that for 30 years, so I will ride it like that.
Thanks for all your help
Geo

Well, I'll tell you one thing. The manual is not always correct in there drafted photo's.

I had a mystery part missing from my clutch. Convinced that the manual was correct, I made the part myself.  It was a washer situation similar to your problem.....and with the part in there the stacked height of the assembly was too thick......and the clutch would not function.  My 4-5 hour clutch replacement turned into a 16 hour nightmare.  In the end? I put the clutch back together the way it was like you did....with great results.

Another big problem with the age of these old lady's is that it's hard to tell if someone has been messing with an assembly and "f"ed it all up.  Or......converted the assembly from a bike of a different year.  A gentleman on ebay sold me some parts off a bike of my year......but someone had changed them on his bike and my bike was original.  I had to eat the return shipping of these heavy parts.:X

Let us know if the seals hold after you get them back in?

Got the bike all put back together, and went for a ride last night.
So far so good. I plan on putting on the miles today, so we will see.
Have a good one
