Just joined the forum....where is the oil thread???;)

I have a 1996 Aspencade - A 2002 Vulcan 1500fi - A 2003 DR650 Dual Sport.

Just rented a 2007 1800 for a trip all across (up and down really) California. Man what a nice ride!! Slow speed control and rolling through the twisties was awesome!! Just as impressive was the stereo. I am determined to upgrade my GL1500 to something comparable. Have been searching through the forum and have learned quite a bit.

If anyone wants to revisit the subject here, please feel free...looking for replacement speakers for both front and rear as well as an amplifier. I think I have all the info I need about how to get to the front speakers, but didn't find anything on the rear and have not taken the time to investigate myself.

Anyway, I'll be in and out of here regularly. Glad to see lots of activity on the forum.

Happyhookah !!

Welcome to the forum,

There are several sources for upgraded speakers. One of them is Chromeworld.com. I don't know about amps but would be interested in that info also.

Actually, I have read over a ton of posts regarding upgrading the sound system on the GL1500. What I haven't been able to find is someone who listed...
  1. A solid set of replacement speakers.
  2. How to remove the rear speakers.
  3. installation and name a brand of mini-amplifier.
I've seen a bunch of people in the process or thinking about doing it but not much in the way of completed jobs. The Polk speakers that are often referenced are a discontinued model.

Right now Crutchfield has Polk speakers buy one set, get another half off.

Allow me to step in here.   I have done it all on mine but you have to remeber that you need to have the watts to start with.  Power amps take power.  I have a CompuFire alternator on my 1500 so I have watts to burn.

Now to your questions...

1.  Watts is everthing.  If you plan to use a 100 Watt RMS per channel amp then you better have speakers that can handle it.  The Polks are fine speakers for up to about 30 Watts RMS.  Great sound.  Not too great pricing.

2. To remove rear speaker is so easy you will laugh.  Remove the three phillips head screws under the speaker housing on the outside, then open the trunk and remove one screw going through the lid near the hinge into the pad section.  Close the lid and lift the assembly up and unplug the two speaker wires from the speakers.  4  phillips heads hold the speaker by it's holes through a housing sandwich.

3.  Installation is a bit of a chore because you don't want to use the stock wiring with a power amp.  So start by getting some good power wherever you plan to have the power amp.  Use my guide to do that part.
http://goldwingtech.info/auxwiring/auxpwrwiring.html
Once you get power you need to rewire the bike's speaker wires to the amp with heavy wire so you will be taking a lot of the bike apart to get that done.
I don't yet have a guide ready for adding the amp system but mine goes like this:

Amp, equalizer and speaker to line converters in the trunk.
I use the stock wiring to get the stock amp output to the rear speaker area only.  I pick them up with additional wiring to get it to the line converters.  The stock wiring for the front speakers will no longer be used but leave them for restoring to stock later if you wish.  Eliminate the fader if you have one.  I made a pluggable jumper from the connectors supplied on the fader when I took it out.  It bridges the amp output to the rear speaker area only now.  Fading occurs on the equalizer, where it should be.

While you have it apart, add the AudioVox FMM-A100 in-line FM modulator for a good and easy line in to the radio for your MP3 player.

You can get a decent kit of amp, speakers and harness from http://electricalconnection.com

I prefer to get my own stuff and found  that http://beachaudio.com beats the hell out of Crugchfield for selection and price.

Done....

I have upgraded to the compufire alt and battery. I'll keep looking into the audio set up as I am always intimidated with electrical stuff and the system described might be a little too adventurous for me.

Thanks for the info on the rear speakers too.

Rudy's system is easy to follow and understand. There are many pictures and diagrams to help. You won't be sorry if you add this. I put it on my bike and love the options it gave me, and peace of mind.

I wish my father was still alive so I could take him for a ride. As long as he can do it, take him riding as much as you can. You never really know how much you love and miss them till they're gone, then it's too late to do the things you keep putting off till the next time. If you ever put him on the back of a Wing, you may never get him off!!
