I found this site tromping around the net to better understand a problem I'm working through on my bike.
A little history.
Got my 81 GL1100 in 1983 after my wife refused to ride wth me any more on my old chopped out 72 SX650 Yamaha twin. I added the fairing, radio gear and intercom electronics. Started a family shortly after that and my bike spent the next 20+ years drained, wrapped in plastic and tarped except for the need to move it every couple of years required me to unwrap it and take it for a couple of short spins. As you can imagine it ran worse each time from the sitting.
The kids are now both away at college and with gas prices through the roof I have decided to get serious about riding again. At least for the week or 2 of summer we get around here.
Worked out most of the cobwebs except a little lower than expected compression which I assume is causing a slight "Lean" missfire when cruising around town at RPM's below 3K. After reading a few postings I believe the rings may be gummed up and sticking to the pistons and not seating right. Compression is running 140 - 155 psi with a warm engine but that even jumps round each time I run the test. Adding a little oil into the cylinders during the compression test wil bring the compression up to 185 PSI on all cylinders.
I plan to try soaking the cylinders with EZ Lube for a few days as discussed in one of the postings.
Does anyone know how to repair tears in the seat. One of our cats decided to use it as a scratching post a few years back. I purchased a vinyl repair kit that uses some filler goo and a heating tool but have not worked up the courage to try it yet. I may may it worse.
This is a geat site.

People in the Portland area don't mingle that much with anyone further south than Salem and definately not Eugene and below. Hell that's almost California down there.

Hi Oldwingowner! Welcome to the Forum!
We restored an 81 last year and used a skin to cover the seat instead of trying to repair it cost was under $100 for the skin.

I keep a personal safety zone, a bit of Wyoming, around me all the time. That way, no matter where I go, I am not really in Oregon.
