Hello everyone. Thanks for providing this great resource. I just picked up a used original 1975 GL1000 for a great deal.
I'm 28, and have been riding since I was 17... Below are the bikes I've owned and run (in order of ownership)...
1975 Honda 360
1976 Honda 750
1980 Suzuki GS850 (currently own)
1984 Yamaha Venture 1200 (currently own)
1975 Honda GL1000 (currently own)
So, picked up a "refurbed" GL1000 from a friend. He and his dad rebuilt it as a father/son project. Unfortunately, neither of them are able to ride. It was a bike that was in their family, my friend's uncle's bike. It does have an aftermarket electronic ignition, Vetter fairing and some aftermarket bags. I'm trying to decide whether or not to take it back to its original stock configuration. We shall see.
Unfortunately, it's been sitting for 2 years since neither my friend or his dad could ride it. But, luckily, they ran the carbs out so they're not plugged with varnish. It definitely could use a tune up and resynchronization, but all in all, it a good runner right now. It sat for almost 20 years before they got around to refurbing it. And since they never rode, the brakes needed some attention. With some great info I found on the site, I rebuilt the two front calipers this weekend. The rear master cylinder probably needs some attention too, but that's for another weekend. :-)
I was able to get it tuned well enough to ride after a few short jaunts yesterday after the rain, and was confident enough in it, that I took it to work today (~50 mile journey).
It's a VERY smooth suspension and comfortable ride, moreso than my Venture. However, seating position is uncomfortable to me (a bit hunched over - the old classic cruiser style bike, and my shins rest right on the engine guard bars). It also seems to lack "snot," but I'm hoping that a proper tune up will help. It's also not nearly as nimble as my Venture, and notably heavier "feel." I'm not ripping on the Goldwing, mind you, just offering my comparisons based on my experience with my other bikes. I think everyone agrees that the first generation needed lots of improvements - the Goldwing of today is a beautifully crafted machine. The boxer style engine on the GL1000 is a little different sound than I'm used to, although familiar (have several friends with Subarus). It's nice to have a little something different :-)
The bikes in great shape - the only rust is the painted exhaust. Original red paint is pretty nice, but the front master cylinder reservoir cracked during the 20 years of sitting and leaked brake fluid dripping on the tank - the right side Honda emblem fell off, but I do have it.
All in all, a beautiful bike. Looking forward to many beautiful days. Thanks to all who have posted their experiences, and I plan to do the same.
Wishing you well,
Scott
