I am in such a good mood suddenly. I'm still not sure about if I can make it, but things just suddenly got an upswing in that direction perhaps. Still so much to do and so little time though.

If an area is closed due to a forest fire, they will have a detour to take. Most likely a total fire ban at the campgrounds, which in an extreme case, may include a ban on using a small cook stove and possibly even a total ban on travelling in certain areas due to extreme fire hazard conditions. Should be able to do a Google Search for closures in the area(s) of concern.(National Forest Service(?))

Good post and advice, Those fires can definitely impact a persons planned route if they are close enough.

I'm going to put this update here just in case anyone is traveling my way and wants company. Due to gentle pressure/concern from both friends and family I have scrubbed my plans to take a sourthern route out to NASSIR 4. Instead I will be going out pretty much the same route that I will be using coming back (northe through S Dakota, Yellowstone, etc). I will post a better route map when I get it finalized. This change was made because of several factors not the least of which were heat, wildfires and my age (go figure). Another plus is that overall it is less actual mileage so we can slow down a bit around yellowstone and other points of interest. A special thanks goes out to my online friends for weighing in on this topic with nothing other than my wellbeing in mind!

As of you know, last weekend I did the front brakes on my GL1800 ABS in preparation for the trip to NASSIR 4. The install (I thought) went well but to my disapointment the brake pads seemed to drag slightly. I re-worked them 3 more times with the same results. So, on Monday morning I was waiting at Sloan's in Murfressboro to put my ride in the shop and get some help. I left her in their capable hands and then flew out to California on business. I got a call today from Darren at Sloan's and he told me that they checked the brakes thoroughly and I did a good job on the brakes and the slight drag was to be expected until they conformed to the rotors. Total labor cost $26 for piece of mind. Seeing that I used up all my maintenance time with reworking the brakes I decided to let them do the fluid change out (brake, clutch and rear diff). More piece of mind and they also told me that she was ready for the long trip I had planned. Whew, I thought the brakes were going to be a potential show stopper. Glad it didn't turn out to be! I will be home on Thursday evening and if all contibues to go as planned my daughter (SillyWig) and I will be heading out in the early afternoon for stop # 1 somewhere in MO. See you soon!

I'm leaving this Friday - July 01 - Taking the scenic route. Float by Minot ND to Mt.Rainier, pick up momentum to fly up Mt.St.Helens and land in Colombia Gorge, skip over to Klamath Falls, then north to find a ferry to Victoria Island and if all works out float back to Port Orchard.

Glad it was just new pads needing broke in. I figured it might be, but never know from long distance like this. I never changed pads on a bike yet but I get that on cars/trucks all the time putting on new pads. You still leaving out on Friday like planned, or the way you said home Thursday and leaving after noon are you starting Thursday? Still planning to meet up and ride with you a ways, maybe do some other running as I turn back home again from a ways north.

I've got relatives around Minot, ND and heard there is allot of flooding in that area. I don't know if other areas are flooding or not. May want to check the routes for problems to north also. I guess it does sound a bit confusing now that I have re-read it. Yes, we are leaving on Friday afternoon on schedule and should be at stop #1 before dark on Friday.

2 days and a wake up before my departure!!! In between that is a flight from Alaska to NM and a quick washing of the bike to get the dust off of it and then final checks of the bike itself to make sure it is good to go. Route has changed due to a friend who had to change their plans. So I am still hitting Moab Utah, then up to Yellowstone, up through Montana and then on to WA with a stop at a good friends in Benton City.
