The general area already picked by those at NASSIR2 is just dandy to me. I can live with any of them. I do plan to make this come hell or high water next year as the next one I'm sure will be too far for my aging body. I'll feel good if I can make ever other rally.

I would like to see the Watkins Glen area picked though but that poll (if there is one) hasn't been started yet. That's why I voted for the week after the race. I'd love to take a day tour of the wine country near there.

New York is a beautiful place, the State, not the City, though the city is well worth visiting too. Worrying about crime is a waste of time, you're more likely to be shot by a neighbor than a mugger. Though I was once a competitive shooter in the Army and a gun collector I never felt the need to carry a piece other than as a survival tool in Alaska. I don't think this is a valid consideration unless you're really paranoid.
The woman who hangs around here and I visited the NE including New York City in '97 and had a great time. So good that she is insisting on going with me if I go to NASSIR3. She can't ride long distances due to physical problems so we'll be coming by truck and camper if we can make it.
I really enjoyed my visit to Niagra Falls and the Erie Canal Locks, but the very best place on the entire East Coast for me was Old Rheinbeck Aerodrome. A beautiful grass and gravel airstrip in the Hudson Valley housing and flying some of the oldest antique aircraft in the world. Sights and sounds that haven't been seen or heard for nearly one hundred years. They have a 1911 Farman that will be 99 years old next year that they fly. This is a place that can't help but stir the blood of anyone who flies or has an interest in aviation history. The sound of a Fokker D7 is something that will bring up goosebumps on anyone who has an imagination.

Nightrider1

Nightrider ,you can protest all you want .THERE WILL NOT BE A POLL ON LOCATION end off.........

The poll for last years location turned into a farce and the same thing will never happen again . We will move Nassir around the states from year to year and we were already near you last year ,

Upstate NY is still nearer for you than either of the last 2 nassirs were for the Canadains and the guys from the West coast ,If you want to vote on a location for 2011 then turn up for 2010 .. the 2011 location will be picked at the 2010 nassir 3 ..

So just to finish up ,,, THER WILL BE NO POLL FOR LOCATION...as soon as the date poll is over ,we will let you know the location and all the info for hotels ,camping etc .

Elmira is not far away from the proposed sites, just a few mile from the Watkins Glen area and they have http://www.wingsofeagles.com/index.cfm.

I have never been there but have heard it is pretty neat.

A place I never tire of visiting is Letchworth state park.
A trip through there is worth it.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Letchworth_State_Park

It is not far from Buffalo about 95k or so. There is a charge of course but I find it worthwhile.

Also a ride through the Allegheny State park and a visit to the Kinsua Dam is nice.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kinzua_Dam

Kinzua bridge or rather the remains is also worth a trip, I fortunately have been lucky enough to have seen it several times while it was still standing.

I would have expected that more members would vote. I wonder if a link to the poll in the general discussion would get more votes. I think that most of the votes have come from people who attended Nassir 2 because they have been following the thread.

Just thinking.:baffled::stumped:

Upstate New York sounds great and any time is fine with me. I'm not voting on the date being I haven't gotten my stimulus check from the Prez yet. So even that far away, I'm still only drinking and dreaming about attending!

I have family in Hamburg, Canadaigua and Syracuse, and a cabin "by the crick" in Sinclaireville.

Might just maybe have to make this trip...

I see some of you aviation buffs posting some intersting places to visit in the NY area.

For you folks travelling from the west, the biggest aviation event held in the US each year "Air Venture" 2010 (Oshkosh WI) takes place July 26 to August 1 http://www.airventure.org/index.html

In addition to what has been posted there is located in the Finger Lakes the Glenn Curtiss Museum at Hammondsport NY. Curtiss built some of the early aircraft engines which are still flying in aircraft today. Curtiss can be traced back to the Wright Bros. http://www.glennhcurtissmuseum.org/

For those aviation buffs that may venture north of the border;

The Brampton Airport (North-west Toronto) is home to the  Great War Flying Museum http://www.greatwarflyingmuseum.com/

The Hamilton Ontario Airport is home to the Canadian Warplane Museum(CWH). CWH has in its collection one of the two flying Lancaster Bomber's in the world along with one of the two flying Lysanders flying in the world.
http://www.warplane.com/

15 miles from the Buffalo NY/Fort Erie Ontario border is the private collection of the Russell Group located at the Niagara South Airport. The Russell Group collection includes a Spitfire MK IX, Hurricane MK XII, Harvard(T-6) and the only flying Demier powered BF109 in the world. http://www.ragairshow.com/

Thanks, Tricky...I'll be sure to check out Letchworth SP. I was born in Erie at Hammot (sp?) Hospital; if your dad failed to hit the brakes in time, your mom got to give birth in lake Erie; I understand that underwater birthing is all the rage, now? :D

For anyone passing through, I have always enjoyed Presque Isle State Park (the Erie Penninsula). There's a very pleasant 13 mile ride around it, but remember that it's a "putt", and not a raceway. The place is famous for having cops hiding behind trees, cabins, etc. lying in wait for fools who want to go 60 in a 20? mph zone....

Their website is http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/stateparks/parks/presqueisle.aspx

I agree about Allegheny state park; I grew up camping there. I'd like to run a good bit of route 6 to the east- it runs through some of the most rural and undeveloped parts of PA. Anyone interested? :waving:

Or Merritt, or Woodbury...

My grandmother worked the vineyards, tying in the spring and picking in the fall. Mmmm, concord grapes fresh off the vine...!

Maybe a trip to Dunkirk, where my great-great grandfather was lighthouse keeper.

http://www.dunkirklighthouse.com/Point_Gratiot.htm

Yeah, I know my way around the Erie coast a lil bit!

There are a ton of good rides around here, as the time nears and the area is narrowed down we will be putting together some agendas for folks to use based on their interests. There are sightseeing trips, winery trips, lakeshore trips, hills and twistys trips, Dairy Queen trips, and about anything else one could imagine.

A nice ride along six,  take in the Grand Canyon of PA, which I think was mentioned earlier in a thread.

You can also drive past the infamous Attica prison on your way back to Hamburg..

And NO Wexy I havnt seen the inside of this one :P

Oh!!!! Thanks Wayne for the reminder! If the members choose July 27-29th (Oshkosh week) for NASSIR 3, Wayne and I will not get to make NASSIR 3 due to both of us having to work all week in Oshkosh. :(    I know other members will get knocked out of NASSIR 3 as well because of Oshkosh.

It is a democracy............the members can pick the dates and what every the majority chooses will be the date. But I sure hope another date is chosen. I know Wayne, I, and others would sure like to be in NY for NASSIR 3! :cooldevil:
