I think I'll start out by riding down the Erie coastline on 5, easing on through the small towns along the way. I'll make a stop at St Columban's Retirement home and visit for a minute with Sister Corona. She is an Irish nun who runs the place, she took great care of my grandmother there until her death, and even kept an eye on my father for a few years {even though he wasnt a resident there}. There is also an incredible view of Lake Erie there, on a high cliff that allows you to see the rocky bottom. Then I'll ease on into Dunkirk to visit Point Gratiot Lighthouse. There is a nice museum on the premises, the first casualty of the Civil War is buried there. I like to pull a fast one on the tour guide when I'm there. My great great grandfather was a lighthouse keeper there, and there is a portrait of him on the wall, to which I bear a rather striking resemblance... http://www.dunkirklighthouse.com/Point_Gratiot.htm From there, I will slide on over to one of the working class joints for a sandwich and a beer. Tucked into the residential neighborhoods, you get great chow for a great price, and ambience that Applebees wishes it could buy. From there, I will head out to the countryside on backroads that meander through the vineyards where my grandmother used to tie, prune and pick grapes. If you ate/drank Welch's grape products in the '50's - '70's, she played a little part in that. I'll also make stops at Woodbury Winery and Merritt Winery, have a sip of Chatauqua Niagra and make some purchases to replenish the home stock. http://www.woodburyvineyards.com/ http://www.merrittestatewinery.com/ From there, I will head over to Sinclairville, I know a great hole-in-the-wall there, the Witch Kitch Inn, might get some wings and a cold one, and make a stop at the family cabin. It sits on a creek, the bottom is full of some shale type rock that is full of fossils. From there, I might make the trip to my favorite winery, Bully Hill. since Old Man Taylor died, they have sanitized the history a bit, but to say he was an underdog is an understatement. Not many folks have the cahunas to take on Coca Cola after they bought out Taylor Wines! Great wine without all the additives so common today. I have one of the original bottles that got him into trouble, simply for putting his own name on it... http://www.bullyhill.com/ http://www.fingerlakeswinefun.com/history.cfm#bully From there, I will cruise the backroads back to Fredonia, where my grandfather once was a trolley conductor, only to drive a Greyhound when trolleys became history. I think I will stop for dinner at Chimera's. It is an Italian place buried in an Italian neighborhood, good honest food. From there, some more country roads to slip up to the back door of Hamburg where I'll find out what the rest of you have been doing all day! Sounds like a day to me! So, no one wants to ride along? Makes no difference to me, I will do my thing, but company is more than welcome! I made a quick Google route, made strictly of side roads, not a toll road in sight. After your untold miles of super slab, think how refreshing a 161 mile ride that Google thinks will take 5 hours {not counting stops} will be! The countryside will be SEEN!

ob1quixote, I wish you had posted your grand tour earlier and I would not have missed Bully Hill Winery. I stop for a visit at the Glenn Curtiss Museum in Hammondsport NY on Oct 23 on my way home from Elmira NY. I did have lunch at the Village Tavern & Inn in downtown Hammondsport, close to the waterfront, where the menu indicates that they offer 150 different beers and just about every kind of wine from the local winery's. http://www.villagetaverninn.com/ With regards to your wine tour one could look at http://www.chautauquawinetrail.org/ There is a map and brochure on this website that lists the location of 21 different winery's.

He'll be needing a safe haven for his retirement years, and I'm sure the nearby availability of good wines won't hurt a bit!

Folks, this grand tour will take place during the '10 MnG...! I suppose a couple more stops could be included and still keep the overall ride/stops time reasonable. I dont know whether there is a schedule of events to work around, but I would hate that someone miss some MnG activities 'cause they are following me around the countryside!

Half the fun is getting to know others with small group rides into the unknown.
