See how things go and if Moms home ,or out running the roads, and I may be in Ohio visiting her just before the meet anyway.

OK, so for those that will want to stay at a hotel, there's several to choose from. They range in price from $132 a night (the most expensive suite at the holiday inn, the cheapest at the holiday inn is $67) all the way down to $41/night. There are several Bed & Breakfasts there as well, but normally those are on the high end of the spectrum. Here's a link to the info.

http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotels-g57755-Front_Royal_Virginia-Hotels.html

As with last year, and since I can't confirm how many people will be there, they won't give any special rates as of yet.

FYI  ....

Please note that there is no potable water available at the group campsite there. Either bring your own jugs of water, or a water purifier/boil you water, or obtain your water from the regular campground, a mile further south along the road.

I just noticed this while posting campground reviews on a moto-camping site I belong to;

At a Glance

Reservations:     Elizabeth Furnace Group Campground Reservation Information

Fees:     Site A $55 (max 50 people). Site B $30 (max 25 people). Reservations only.

Open Season:     Open year round

Restrictions:     Alcoholic beverages prohibited. Tent camping only.  Standard Forest Service Rules and Regulations apply.

Closest Towns:     Strasburg, VA

Water:     No drinking water available

Restroom:     Vault toilets

Operated By:     Lee Ranger District: 540-984-4101

Just thought I'd point that out to you  ....  so make plans to have some kind of a large water container on hand, for water storage at camp!

Dusty

Already in the works for the water storage, I plan on bringing several large collapsible containers for water. Oh, and another note for those that haven't been there yet, there are regular toilets and showers at the "family" camp sites that are not that far away.  I'm going to go see if I can visit the site to see what else is needed sometime in the next few weeks or so.

Sounds like you're on top of it!  :cooler:

Oh   ..... and the hot showers are over there as well, so you will have showers. 3 or 4 stalls IIRC.

I can't wait either. The wife and I are already getting our camping gear ready. We will be bringing plenty of firewood too. Anyone want to step up and bring the marshmallows? I think a ride down skyline drive and maybe turning around at 211 or hwy 33 would be a nice group ride, what do you guys think? If the cost of entry would be an issue, the ride down fort valley rd to SR 675 over to hwy 11 and back up would be a nice short ride too.

Fort Valley rd is the road that the campground is on (for those that haven't been there).

What cost of entry? Is that a toll road or through a pay to get in park?

I'd bring Marshmallows but I don't think I could fit them on my 1500, you saw how I pack that thing down LOL

it's a pay to get in park and the entrance fee for non-commercial vehicles is $10 (same for bikes) but it's $10 for a 7 day pass which is the day you get it and the following 6 days.

The ride and views along skyline drive would be well worth the entry fee I would think, specially if your going to be there for a few days. I'm driving it back from there this time, and possibly to there as well. It's a slower ride but I don't want to rush anything when Im riding.....

I saw 3 black bears towards the northern end of the Skyline, the last day I rode it.

Here's another nice little ride, with a nice switchback included, to Luray, where you can take in the Caverns, or loop back to camp   :action: ....   http://g.co/maps/fu8e6

or  .....  for you civil war buffs, head on over to the Fredericksburg/Spotsylvania area to view that sort of thing there and back  -   http://g.co/maps/ffzky

that little ride is the second one that I proposed, I believe there is no entrance fees for that one.  Oh, and I live in Spotsy so if anyone wants to visit down here for a day, just let me know, I drive/ride by some of the best walking trails out here. :) great place for a nature hike with some civil war info included.  On a side note, I think I might have a place in my back yard where someone was buried back then.  I have a pile of rocks about 2 feet high, 5-6 ft wide and about 15 ft long.  Of course it could just be a pile of rocks though. lol.

HI folks,

Since I don't have a 12000 mile trip planned this year, perhaps a trip down to Front Royal is in order.

I stayed there 2 years ago and rode the skyline on May 3rd in 75+degree weather and it was awesome scenery. I even posted a video of it on my site.

Looked forward to another visit ever since so this event might just be what the doctor ordered.

I will keep in the loop.  And thanks for planning this event.
