Labor Day weekend is on the 3rd of Sept. I am going to hook onto that for a vacation, so it doesn't matter to me if it is the week before on the 25th of Aug. or Sept. 8th.

If we get to vote on the weekend I would prefer the weekend after labor day as there will be less traffic as the kids will be back in school. I looked at the routes Blulakr has put in and we have ridden some of the first two of them and they are great twisty roads! 2 years ago we went on the 3rd route thru Petrolia and after leaving Ferndale its about 80 miles of road (if you could call it that) that took us 5 hours! I swear it was paved 1 pickup truck load at a time! It would make a great Adventure Touring but is not a Goldwing road! It's so rough that the only way you can enjoy the scenery is to stop as you need all your attention to miss the potholes and stay on the road. Unless it's been repaved after we were there it's not a good road. The other routes are interesting with some great roads and views! Having someone like Blulakr who lives in the area and has knowledge of roads is a real advantage! Thanks Blulakr! Bill Last edited on Wed Feb 1st, 2012 02:15 am by Ogrebro |

+1 on the weekend after Labor Day. Good chance of nice daytime weather and less traffic The nights will be a bit crisp. The three maps I posted all are very much back-roads and may not be to most folks liking. Here is one more that is two-lane, well traveled and has fuel, restroom and food stops along the way. Unfortunately it doesn't include Ave of the Giants which I strongly suggest everyone try. Plan on around 7 hrs. I will likely be riding this one. http://g.co/maps/yafmw Tomorrow looks sunny so I may ride to the Van Duzen Campground and take pics to share. When at Van Duzen ask Pat, or which ever ranger is on duty about cost and availibility of Pamplin Grove , ask to see it and check it out. The last time I was there(4 times in 2011) the county campgrounds were signicantly cheaper than the state campgrounds (Grizzly Creek). Also much larger camps and more foliage. 49HardHead

I know, I know, that means I'll have to ride to them all. I won't like it but for fellow wingers I'll make the sacrafice In the meantime this might wet your appetite. Check out the rolling hills at around 4:50 into the vid. That is the eastern part of sr36 closer to red bluff. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6lZQ_TSvoGY&feature=fvsr Tracy Last edited on Sat Feb 4th, 2012 04:48 am by Blulakr ____________________ Know your limits and never ride beyond them. Rode to sr36 campgrounds yesterday. I checked out Pamplin Grove, Van Duzen and Grizzly Creek. There is no cel service in this area, only payphones. Nearest store with gas 8 miles. Motels and restaurants 15 miles. Pamplin Grove... http://co.humboldt.ca.us/portal/living/county_parks/default.asp?parkid=vduzen2 This one was closed. A small park, 10 tent sites ($20ea). It was easy to miss since the entrance is a small driveway with only one small sign. 14 miles inland from Fortuna. Van Duzen (aka Swimmers Delight)... http://co.humboldt.ca.us/portal/living/county_parks/default.asp?parkID=VDUZEN1 A 30 site campground with flush toilets and hot coin op showers. Tent sites ($20ea) along the riverbank. 15 mi inland from Fortuna. Quiet and well off the highway. Both of these appear to have group sites but they are $500-nite on wekends They also are no-reservation, first come first serve. Grizzly Creek... http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=421... A 30 site state campground. Tent sites are $35 and a group site for $90. 17 miles inland. This one has the nicest amenities of the 3. Easy to find. It is more expensive per site but the $90 group site might be a good option. Reservations accepted. It is located right next to the highway with some sites barely 50ft away which would be noisy. I'd say grizzly creek group camp for cost savings or van duzen for overall best spot. I know that the sites (by the 'swimming hole') at the Van Duzen Swimmers Delight' are quite generous in size, with most sites being able to accommodate at least 3 -4 X 4 man tents. There are 3 sites (1 - 3. or 2-4 ?) right close together, within close proximity of the vault toilet and water spigot. No traffic noise there either. Grizzly is usually very busy and as you say, right alongside the road.

Thanks Blulakr for doing the foot work and research on this . I wish I could have ridden with you. Dusty's photos 3&4 posted 1/28 show site #1 at Van Duzen, at Pamplin Grove is a group cook area and more tables than we could use. I can smell those redwoods from here!

The ride actually wasn't that great. There are parts of sr36 that don't see daylight in winter. The pavement was actually green with moss in spots. Made me pucker a time or 2

Another place to stay are the KOA in Eureka and the KOA at Trinity center on Hwy 3 if we rode in that direction.

Tent sites at KOA for Sept 8th are $31. I stayed at the KOA on hwy 3 at Trinity Lake a couple of years ago and vowed to never go there again. More expensive than other campgrounds and noisy. They allowed off-road vehicles so there were teenagers zippin' around on quads thru the campground all weekend. They do have different owners now so maybe it's better. Much like Crescent City, Eureka rarely gets warmer than mid 60's during the summer so keep that in mind. Personally if I'm going to take the time and $$ to ride somewhere I prefer it to be warmer. I haven't stayed at the Eureka KOA but I've heard it's nice. It's easy to find on 101 in between Eureka and Arcata so there are plenty of stores, restaurants and gas stations nearby. Your call.

I've stayed at KOAs in the past and didn't like the crowds or the neighbors proximity. I camp/tour many times and the Redwood coastal area is my favorite. In the warmer months the Van Duzen campground is inland enuf to be a bit warmer. When in Crescent City I stay in Hiouchi,it's far enuf inland to be warm. And the motel is nice and well priced in case of rain. Eureka ,being on the ocean like C.C. is noticably cooler and more fog. I'm up for anywhere in there, but bang for the buck, it's Van Duzen hands down. The most important thing is the ride and the good company of friends.

Well wherever we camp is OK by me as I'm looking forward to going! As long as I have a place for my tent and the trucks don't run over me I'm a Happy Camper!! Bill
