:applause:  Ospreys are truly majestic.  :applause:

That last one couldn't seem to get airborne...reminds me of the time we were fishing on Pathfinder Reservoir in Wyoming, and my buddy had just killed a bloody carp he had caught.  He threw it back in the water, thinking the Gulls would clean it up.

Well, in comes this big ol' Pelican performing their usual perfectly beautiful & graceful landing, gloms the carp in his beak, and starts in a-flappin'.  I noticed he was having problems getting the lift he needed, and his head was starting to tilt, but he wasn't givin' up... the carp slipped a little in his grip, and that big, beautiful, graceful Pelican did a cartwheel on the water...awesome!!

He surfaced, shook his head a little, reacquired the carp with a sure-grip, and tried it again...and made it.

Just sayin'...its not something you forget, seeing a mature Pelican crash from cargo overload... :weightlifter:

From my observations, Osprey are not all that proficient at fishing .:?

When I lived in BC, I used to fly fish a lot in back country lakes, carting my canoe around all over. I would say that by my observations, Osprey were successful only 10 - 15% of the time I saw them dive. They would surface after an attempt with no luck, so often, I wondered how they survived!

Bald Headed Eagles on the other hand were THE Masters of snatching fish. Never saw one miss!

Many thanks for sharing this.

We have many here in South west Florida. They like to build their nests in strange places too, such as high voltage power transmission line poles over looking busy street traffic or draw bridge signal light beams.

One such raised the possibility of a serious black out do to the nest short circuiting if completed, as the wires are very close. FPL, the locale juice supplier installed a pole with a nest platform for the birds to rebuild their nest last week. The nest is almost finished today.

I tried to get pictures but my little cheap camera does not get close enough.

FPL and other Florida utilities have built hundreds of these nesting platforms throughout the state.

Don't know why but being posted by PP I was waiting for the fish to whip the bird or the bird to fly into an F16 or something.:?

10 or so years ago, one showed up across the street from us in a microwave tower. It would land up there almost every night, just before dark. Early morning it would leave. That lasted almost a year, then never saw it up there again.
