Will,

I just stopped in to recheck to see how your dad Mike is doing.  I am going to renew all of the prayers that I have received and pass them your way again.  That is going to be a bundle I can tell you for sure.  Also including all the prayers that were sent to my mom this past week.

The past few weeks have been really full here also visiting my doctors, so I have not been keeping up with the forums like I want to.

Just know that Mike is being thought of here in Arizona as well as other places in the world.  Looking forward to meeting your dad at the Calhoun, GA Goldwing meet.

Will, as today is Memorial Day, I'd like to let you and the family know you are on our minds and in our thoughts and prayers this day. As people pass by so taken with thier own affairs they seldom speak or awknowledge you, please take heart that there are many very concerned and praying with and for you and your family. I can only add to what others have already said and give Thanks that God has put each and every one of us into the other's lives.     Ken

Hi Will,

Thanks for taking the time to visit us here and keeping us up to date on your dad.  I haven't been visiting the site recently but often think about Mike and praying for him.  Please send him my love and best wishes.

Since we haven't heard from them in a while, I took it upon myself to contact Will via email. The reply I got was not the one I hoped for. Here it is:

Tim, thank you for the email, will try to update eveyone soon. We are looking at some hospice options. Daddy has decided that he doesn't want anymore treatment. Please feel free to post this because it may be a day or two before I can. Our family is making peace with the situation.
Will

Will, I did not reply to you by email, as I'm sure you have enough on your plate. This is sobering news indeed, and I wish I could offer more than my prayers and sympathy.

Just like Redwing said. Will keep praying that all can find peace. We went through the same thing with my dad. I will say that hospice was a blessing for us, hope it can be the same for you and your family.

Friends,

Can't thank you enough for all the emails.  My apologies for not posting sooner. Tim sent me an email and I had a chance to respond by blackberry.

I visited with Daddy last weekend and we knew that Hospice was on the horizon.  Over the last several weeks, his stomach has not cooperated.  The surgery to bypass the tumor was successful but the digestive system never recognized it.  We found out last week that the second feeding tube was not effective, either.

Daddy has had horrible nights.  I won't describe it in detail but he cannot keep anything, including medicine, down.  The bottom line is he can't eat, and every effort to feed him has failed.

This past Tuesday Daddy decided not to see the oncologist again. He called all of his family and told us that he did not want anymore treatment.  My parents met with Hospice this week.

Daddy has made the tough decisions for us.  He's at peace with his decision and has slept better since he made it.  Daddy's mind is clear; his pastor visited with him yesterday. Momma is doing as good as to be expected.

I'll post again soon.  Again, thanks to everybody for the prayers.  Please continue to think of us.

Will

On a side note,  I want to explain why I am disappointed with the social security administration.  Daddy has worked for forty years and has received zero benefits even though he has been declared disabled.  There is a five month waiting period from the date of onset until benefits start - a diagnosis of ALS is the only exception. Benefits are not retroactive. Senator Mitch McConnell's office has been wonderful helping us.  With some luck we may get at least one check from the Government.  I'm a lawyer, and this has me extremely frustrated.

Thanks for the update Will even though the news isn't what I'd like to have heard. I'm glad to hear that your father is accepting and at ease with the situation as it is. I only hope that I can do as well when my time comes.

Thanks Will for the update.  I too am sorry the news isn't better, but I'm glad your Dad is at peace.  Our government never ceases to amaze me with the decisions they make.  A man disabled with terminal cancer should be a no-brainer for benefits.  They think nothing of giving benefits to drug addicts, yeah I know most of you probably don't know that, but I know a guy that's getting SSI simply because he has been diagnosed as permanently disabled as a drug addict. :whip:

God's peace to you and your family,
John
