Any cable tv techs out there? I had a shock on my cable bill today...an additional $80 worth of pay-per-view movies on our account. Most of them were of the "adult" variety. Several of the charges were when nobody was home, the last came when we were in Maryland last weekend.

The cable rep said there is no way a movie can be ordered on my account unless it comes from my remote.  I don't see how it could have been ordered. In the last 2 years, we've ordered one movie and now in 4 weeks, there have been 8 movies on my account. I don't know how this is happening.

Nobody is in our house and I know that we aren't accidently ordering them.

Any thoughts?

I even went and checked the pole outside to see if my neighbor helped himself to my cable, but I dont' think so.

I've blocked the account and have the digital box unhooked. The cable rep was nice enough to take the charges off....this time. We'll see what happens.

Put a motion camera in your house

I have a neighbor (real scum bag) that has trained his kid to look for his allowance in the freezer, sock drawers, books and where ever else you may hide money in the house

Hey my kid needs to use the bathroom, off to look for his allowance the kid goes

Went to Ohio to pick up a truck, was gone for 3 days and came back to an open house

You never really know what the people next to you are capable of till you catch them RED HANDED

I would keep an eye on bank, credit card accounts

After my PayPal was hacked, I've been pretty diligent about changing passwords and stuff.  I don't know enough about cable to know if can be hacked.

good point about the camera though.

This reminds me of

There where some newlyweds moving to the sticks, bought some land and planted a double wide, started to settle in. The man worked a lot and at times had to travel, the woman did not like being alone in the house and would go to mothers when the man has to work out of town on the weekends

He got a call one weekend “we have been robbed”

He cam back home to find everything (even the carpet) gone and the wife shook up real bad, did not want to live in the house anymore she was terrified. The man in debt could not just cut and run so the couple split

The man was pissed but he had a plan

He waited and waited and planned, about a year went by

The man went to a rental place, Sears and a couple of furniture stores and pulled some boxes out of the trash, big screen tv, microwave ect took them home and placed them out by the driveway near the burn barrel (where we burn our trash)

The man had established work habits he followed like clock work, he was away from the house 3 days a week every week

He got his brother to stay with on him and drive his truck off, looked like the house was empty ,,,,,,, he waited, he did this every weekend

Almost nodding off in the back room he heard what he was waiting for, they where back

He shot one in the leg and trapped another, one got away

Later in court the judge asked him what he was thinking and the man had one word “revenge”

The judge asked the man so what did you do

The man said I tied his sorry ass to a chair and beat him till I got tired

I would have kept on if you had not stopped me. The one that got away told the police he was shot robbing a home and it took police two weeks to find the other robber tied to a chair bloody and crying

The judge asked the man when he planned on stopping the punishment, setting the robber free, the man replied when my wife was convinced the home was safe enough to move back into the house, by this time she had re married

I have left out a few details, this is a true story, the man (home owner) got 20 years

There is one thief out there with a limp and one with a twitch that craps his pants every time he hears the word “wife”    :cooldevil:

Geez...I hope that action that drastic won't be needed.:?

I also hope I never make "that man and his brother" mad at me!  :(

We had the exact same problem several years ago. OK I'm thinking I have two adult  sons and a adult daughter that have keys to or home and know that the front door was always open to them....But after getting a bill for long distance calls to California and Mexico, along with an outrageous "Adult" cable bill. I changed the locks and grilled my "Adult Children" ...All of them pleaded innocent, however the daughter acted a little strange about the calls to Mexico and California....That gave me the idea she knew more than she was telling......

I too hid out across the street from my house and yup I caught my "thief", it was my daughters common law hubby....the slime broke into my house was on the phone with one of his "wives" in Mexico, and watching a cable porno movie.....Needless to say he didn't never watch any more movies or make any more calls to Mexico from my home.... I called the law and they busted him for breaking and entering and a few more good charges thrown in... I also gave my daughter the phone numbers of ALL his "wives" in Mexico and California he had been calling.....Then I stood back and watched the fur fly.....

Cable company took charges off my bill, the phone company also took off charges, now my wife and I carry Nextel cell phones...No house phones....

Claude

It takes a very brave or stupid person to break into someone's house. Most of the time it is someone that knows you and your routine.

My dad told me of a story about a man back in Pennsylvania when he was youngster. The man thought a neighbor was coming over and pay a visit to the wife when he was gone.

He figured out the path thru the woods the man was using and set a bear trap for him, the one with the steel jaws. Caught him just below the knee. The springs take a full grown man and a clamp to compress to set the trap.

Needless to say the man was still there in the trap when the husband went to check it. This would have had to been back in the early 30's. The law and judge probably never got involved.

cable can be hacked.  one of the tenants that lives in my fathers rental property went to jail for stealing cable from his neighbor.  he would have never been caught , but he decided to call the cable company and tell them that his remote was messed up and he ordered pay-per-view movies over the phone.  pretending to be his neighbor.  he got the guys account number from a bill stub in the trash.  had all the info he needed on it.  full name, account number, etc.

The same exact thing happened to me, 10+ years ago. I took my family to New York for vacation. When I got my cable bill, there was charges for 10 porn movies and 3 PPV events on my bill. I went to the payment center with reciepts of my vacation, showing I was out of state at that time, but that was not good enough.

It is my guess that it is the cable company's was of generating $$$. It is up to you to prove it was a mistake. 99% of the time, it is impossible.

I haven't had cable in 10+ years because of it. I will not pay the $100+ for this crap.

This is MY opinion: Cable is like gasoline. Everyone wants/needs it. And like gas, rates will go up, and "billing errors" will continue, because there are too many people who will just pay it to keep their credit scores high and from getting their service from being cut off.

Good luck in your endevors!

Thanks.  I have my credit limit set to $0 and I have the digital box unhooked. So now I'm curious and kind of secretly hoping another movie will show up on my bill. Just to show the SOBs that it wasn't me charging the other movies.

Oldgrandpainmi is right about one thing. It's a shame we've become addicted to cable TV, internet and cell phones. Paying lots of $$ for something we didn't need or even want 15 years ago. Technology is great, but it's kinda weird I can't leave the house with out my cell phone when I didn't even have one for the first 37 years of my life.

Back in the 60's I worked with a guy that didn't have a TV. His wife nagged him about it for months and he finally relented enough to let her buy a TV Guide.

He went through the guide and handed it back to her and said "Tell me what's worth watching."

She coudn't give him an answer. The listings haven't gotten any better.

Before cell phones:

I worked for a company that expected us reps to be in front of the customer 4 days a week. Fridays we came into the office and did our expense and contact reports. We went to lunch as a group and discussed customer and technical problems.

After cell phones:

In front of the customer five days a week. No office needed, work out of the car or at home. Do reports in the evening or on the weekend instead of playing with the kids or talking to the wife.
