Hey guys,

It is with a heavy heart that I bring you the news of the death of my 96 Magenta 'wing.  I was stopped for traffic, a minivan behind me when an overloaded pickup truck was unable to stop, struck the van, and then me.

I'm happy to say I'm alright, just a little road rash, the helmet saved my life.  Even after a week just looking at the helmet gives me the shakes.  I've retained an attorney and seeking personal and property damages, but ultimately I'm glad to be up and around and able to still be a (somewhat) productive member of society.

Please ride safe, and WEAR YOUR HELMET!!!!

Jeff

PS-- Anyone got an 1800 with a CB for sale?:D I'm not giving up on riding!

Thank God that you had your helmet on. I am glad to hear that you were not seriously injured, at least your post didn't sound like it.

I hope that you got the number of the truck that hit you.
Is the bike totaled??

:waving:I am very glad that you are alright.  I hate posts like this, do not get me wrong, they are good as they make us sit up and be more careful.  But this is one of those things that is not an option to avoid.  I know here lately every time I sign on to the site something has happened.

Anyways.....glad you are ok.......sorry about the pretty bike also.  I have an 1800 with CB.....but nope not for sale:cool:

meeting with insurance adjuster either today or tomorrow, I'm pushing for a total, I would not ever trust it going down the road after being hit like that. The trailer hitch was pushed into the back tire, and of 5 vehicles involved in the accident, I was the only one that left skid marks. I have looked it over and I'm sure the final drive, swingarm, driveshaft, etc will have problems. Still starts right up and runs thogh, but I think she's dead, Jim. I had just hit 10000 miles since buying it last September.

My wife thinks I'd do anything to get an 1800 :D

In all seriousness, in almost 20 years of riding, this was my first major one, and I was at a dead stop, please try to watch out for the idiots out there that might not see you! (Especially ones that drive 45 in a 25 construction zone!! He had some pretty bling on and got a back seat ride away from the scene) :D

Thankfully, I am alright, wasnt wearing my mesh jacket so I got some road rash on my back and arms.  Mainly  just bummed out cause cooler weather is coming soon to Arizona and me with no bike :whinger:.  I wouldnt be so bummed if I was doing something stupid to deserve it :D but such is life, and God does have a sense of humor (if you dont believe me, look at the Platypus)

Take care and God bless you all,

Jeff

Glad to hear you made it!

I've had the chills for years watching idiots in cars, vans and trucks speed up to me and brake right on my butt while I'm stopped at a light. I hate the way people put so much trust in the vehicle and their own ability to stop with in inches without showing any concern for the person in front of them.

Jeff,

It's great to hear you're ok man. That's the important part. The bike can (and it sounds like will) be replaced.

Want to convince your wife you need an 1800, put her butt in that comfy pillion seat, take her down the road a bit, and she'll be hooked.

Mike

Sure good to hear you are ok, that is the important thing.  The Wing can and will be replaced by the sound of it.  I can relate to the stupidity of drivers and what a helmet can do.  Wear one, it did save my life, will save yours.

Sorry to hear about the cager attack HuskerDJ.:( With a bit of negotiating you ought to be able to pick up a decent 1800 from the settlement, just don't take their first offer because they'll low ball you sure as heck. That happened to me some years ago. They ended up settling for almost twice their first offer. Even then I didn't quite break even. Sure glad you didn't get seriously hurt, a fellow near hear got killed in a similar accident a year or so ago. Wear that mesh jacket!!!

Sorry to hear about this... and glad you are going to be okay.  And best of luck getting this all worked out... You might haul it to a dealer and get your own estimate and have some ammunition to help.. SDB/Jim

Already getting second estimates, have a couple people interested in possibly triking it if the frame isnt messed up in the front, the back sure is :). I advised those people to triple check everything, I want to make sure I'm passing a safe machine to the next person.

Also wanted to pass this along to you all. My parents in law, sister in law and other family came into Phoenix last night for a couple weeks, and my 6 year old nephew asked me about the road rash on my shoulders. I was trying to be cute and told him that my guardian angel lent me his wings during the crash and the road rash came when my angel decided that I was done with them. He thought that was a cool answer, but then I look up and see my wife, mother in law and sister in law all in tears. I felt a little bad, but I got a lot of hugs from them later.

I figured last night that in my drinking career, I probably caused my guardian angel(s) to work a lot of overtime. I quit drinking and made a life change over 13 years ago (thank you Bill W. and friends), and I think my angels stepped as a 'thank you' for giving them some rest :)

Medically, I'm doing all right, some possible radial nerve damage in my right hand and possible nerve damage in left foot as well. Appointment with neurologist tomorrow should give a better indication of what's going on there.

One other thing, I'm REALLY getting tired of people coming up to me and saying "you've got a huge payday coming when the settlement is all said and done" Believe me, I'm just glad to still be here, and screw it, it's only money, I'll make more tomorrow.

Bottom line, I was very grateful when everything came to a stop after the impact that no one was handing me a harp to strum!!

Take care all, sorry bout the long post, but I got on a roll :)

Jeff

Another minivan in the back while stopped story. Same thing happened to me last year but she did it herself.

Keep an eye on those minivans creeping up on you while you are stopped.

And thank God you're able to still keep rolling. At least you still have the 1100 to ride, don't you? Unless you sold it after listing it in your profile.

First of all let me say that we are all glad that you are well enough to be posting and sorry to hear about your Wing....Like I have said in the past, the body will heal and it takes time to get back to 100% .....The Wing its mechanical and it can be repaired, or replaced.....Just don't let your insurance company underbid you....They are all famous for that.....

Husker I moved your post from the Gold Wing Technical Forum to here.....It will get more views here....

Claude.....
