I for one, will help you along in your goal.
It is a personal thing you have to do because you want to do it.
I fought for years to try and get a family member to quit smoking. There was always a "reason why" they couldn't do it.
Too much turmoil "right now", or "my job is just too hard", or what ever.
From a non-smoker here, I have seen it done and the only ones who were successful were the ones that just plain put it aside and refused to pick up another one.
There just isn't any such thing as tapering off. I have wasted hundreds of dollars on gimmicks and none of them work. She just used them to keep on puffing "in lessor amounts". That just served to get a double nicotine whammy because the gimmicks of gum or whatever have nicotine in them.
They just try to get you to break the hand to mouth habit.
For me, it is probably as bad or worse than trying to loose the extra 70 pounds I have picked up in the last 20 years. It is hard to back off and not eat again, if you want to stay alive

The stupidest thing I ever did was to pick up a cigarette after 3 years smoke-free.
Once you have the quit part down pat, remember that!
Best of luck to you!

I smoked 3 packs a day for 13 years. I woke up one morning and decided I did't want to smoke anymore. I threw away a half a carton of cigarettes. It's been almost 11 years now.
It can be done.

Yeah, right. What part of "addictive" does everyone not understand? I gave up alcohol in 1983, and it was at least as easy as your tobacco experience. And I really enjoyed my brandy oldfashions...
But...this tobacco thing really has a hold on me! Quit?...Prolly not while I'm still alive!!!

I smoked for over 20+ years, as kids were growing up the schools started the smoke free thing, so kids joined the noise. anyhow when I was overseas a friend tried to quit, he never succeeded. I went to the lights ended up smoking 2-3 time more than with the "real brand Winstons".
Anyhow one tuesday night while watching monday night football (I was in korea) I emptied a pack, across the room was a new carton. never got up to get one and havent smoked since. that was in 1987. It is harder on the family I gues than it is you, the wife complained to the flight surgeon that I was a jerk and mean etc, when I aske d what I had all of a sudden done different I told them both I had quit and hadnt smoked in over a month! So plan on some initial changes to you relationships, but make sure they understand what you are doing.
There used to be a craving for just 1 but I only smoked a cigar at a function 1 time since and I dont like them anyhow. Still hang out with guys that smoke but they dont bother me and I am pretty mellow about it. Worst folks I know are ex-smokers. Many turn into A-holes on the subject so are not nice folks to be around, maybe they were that way as smokers but didnt show it.
Anyhow keep on trying its all in your head. I just wish I could quit eating like I did smoking maybe I would be skinny again! Oh the weight thing is all BS, you may see a few pounds but not the large amount many claim. Dont take uop eating to make up the holding a ciggarette syndrome. Stay busy it will help.

I quit boozin' in 2005, and quit smoking right before last Christmas. A lot of it is in your head. Just make up your mind that "YOU'RE in control, and you are done with this nonsense".
You will save some $$$, which is a nice incentive.

Doug-D,
I've been gone all weekend at the NASSIR rally and it just thrills me to come back home and check up on you.... and find out that you are still "Straight!"
More power to you , it's all in telling yourself it is behind you. Mind over addiction (or so I have been told).
Again, I never smoked or drank alcohol. Was raised under dad's tutelage, he did both and I hated every minute of the foul odor and his belligerent behavior 5 minutes after the first drink of the day.
He was a lovable, laughing Teddy Bear when sober ...

| Congratts to all of you that have made a move to quit smoking, i had my last smoke in Oct of 1986 and it was the hardest thing that i have ever done in my life,, no one knows how much i wanted to have a smoke but i just kept telling my self that " I can live with out a smoke" and i have .. and after a time it does get easier... so Hang in there... don't give up.. and i also stopped drinking in 1988 and have not had a hard drink since that date.. i feel better about life, Only have one addiction now,, that is riding my GoldWing...

| That's great guys. My wife smoked for over 20 years, more than 2 packs a day. When she decided she was going to quit, it was three days (I think maybe 2-3 cigs in those couple days) and she hasn't smoked since. It's been over 15 years now. They say the chemical addiction leaves your body in 5-7 days. The rest is having something else to occupy your hands. Like polishing your bike, polishing my bikes, whatever keeps you busy. Great job guys, keep it up.
