Taken from the RBLR forum: -

On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918, the First World War ended. Since then, 11th November or Armistice Day, has been enshrined in the memories of the nation as a day to pause and remember those who have given their lives for the peace and freedom we enjoy today.

The Royal British Legion has always supported the traditional Remembrance Sunday services and the customary Two Minute Silence on that day. As the national custodian of Remembrance, the Legion also believes that when 11 November (Armistice Day) falls on days other than Sundays - on working days - Remembrance should be brought into the everyday life of the Nation on those days as well. The revival of support for observance of this demonstrates that, despite the passing of the years and the declining number of veterans, the nation still feels strongly about Remembrance.

Remembrance transcends all boundaries. The Legion seeks a small yet important individual and collective act, a rare moment when the Nation can stand together and reflect on the price of freedom. That price is still being paid. More than 12,000 British Servicemen and women have been killed or injured on active service since 1945.

'If we are to maintain our peace and freedom, we must always remember.'

For the fallen

With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children,
England mourns for her dead across the sea.
Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit,
Fallen in the cause of the free.

Solemn the drums thrill; Death august and royal
Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres.
There is music in the midst of desolation
And a glory that shines upon our tears.

They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall not grow old, as we who are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We shall remember them.

They mingle not with their laughing comrades again;
They sit no more at familiar tables of home;
They have no lot in our labour of the day-time;
They sleep beyond England's foam.

But where our desires are and our hopes profound,
Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight,
To the innermost heart of their own land they are known
As the stars are known to the Night;

As the stars that shall be bright when we are dust,
Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain,
As the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness,
To the end, to the end, they remain.

Laurence Binyon

When you go home, tell them of us and say

For your tomorrow we gave our today

Thank you Paul, It is a very sobering thought to know that in excess of 12,000 have pid the ultimate scarifice so we can continue our lives in the way we are used to.

Paul, You, SilverFox, Shreck snr, and myself, and I am sure others on here are members of the British Legion Riders Branch, I am hoping to take my Bike to the local primary school this year, the one Bryony goes to, on Tuesday the 11/11 at 11, The head and I think it will help the youngsters to understand and take an interest.

I saw you question to Colin about using his avatar, I think it would be good if te members here that are members of the RBLR all used the same avatar in the run up to the Rememberance act.

Thanks again.

David

Sounds good to me - I usually change either signature or avatar at this time of year.

WE WILL REMEMBER THEM.

In Flanders Fields the Poppys blow
Between the crosses, row on row
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders Fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from falling hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep,
Though poppies grow
In Flanders Fields.

John McCrae May 1915

Hey Mr. Bagmaster, no one needs permission, all they need is respect for the symbol of the poppy and what it represents.

Sounds like you earned the right anyway. :)

(But thanks for taking the time to ask).

Thats a great picture retiredintime, i myself have pictures of my great grandfather and  grandfather in uniform in WW1 and WW2 respectively and I was also proud to follow them into their regiment. Keep it and cherish it and always remember the scars they bore for us.

Also thanks to Bagmaster  and others of our American cousins for wearing the poppy symbol as a show of respect

retiredintime, I have a photo of my grandfather that looks like the one you posted. He's standing with a couple friends.

Really rough times for the service men then. So many new ways of destroying a mans life.

Chemical warfare, machineguns, tanks, air planes. Why does it have to be that most our technology sprouts around the needs of war? :baffled:

My grandfather was a Captain in the Army in WWI and my dad served in WWII. A lot of family have served this great country of ours and I had planned on doing so but I could not get passed the physical.

To all who have served a BIG THANK YOU and you will never be forgotten.

To those who paid the ultimate sacrifice we can never repay you or your families.:(

I believe the following to be of American origin, and quite recent -

A Dads Poem
Her hair was up in a ponytail, her favourite dress tied with a bow.
Today was Daddy's Day at school, and she couldn't wait to go.
But her mommy tried to tell her, that she probably should stay home.
Why the kids might not understand, if she went to school alone.

But she was not afraid; she knew just what to say.
What to tell her classmates of why he wasn't there today.
But still her mother worried, for her to face this day alone.
And that was why once again, she tried to keep her daughter home.

But the little girl went to school eager to tell them all.
About a dad she never sees a dad who never calls.
There were daddies along the wall in back, for everyone to meet.
Children squirming impatiently, anxious in their seats.

One by one the teacher called a student from the class.
To introduce their daddy, as seconds slowly passed.
At last the teacher called her name, every child turned to stare.
Each of them was searching, for a man who wasn't there.

"Where's her daddy at?" she heard a boy call out.
"She probably doesn't have one," another student dared to shout.
And from somewhere near the back, she heard a daddy say,
"Looks like another deadbeat dad, too busy to waste his day."

The words did not offend her, she smiled up at her Mom,
and looked back at her teacher, who told her to go on.
And with hands behind her back, slowly she began to speak.
And out from the mouth of a child, came words incredibly unique.

"My Daddy couldn't be here, because he lives so far away.
But I know he wishes he could be, since this is such a special day.
And though you cannot meet him, I wanted you to know.
All about my daddy, and how much he loves me so.

He loved to tell me stories he taught me to ride my bike.
He surprised me with pink roses, and taught me to fly a kite.
We used to share fudge sundaes, and ice cream in a cone.
And though you cannot see him. I'm not standing here alone.

"Cause my daddy's always with me, even though we are apart
I know because he told me, he'll forever be in my heart"
With that, her little hand reached up, and lay across her chest.
Feeling her own heartbeat, beneath her favourite dress.

And from somewhere in the crowd of dads, her mother stood in tears.
Proudly watching her daughter, who was wise beyond her years.
For she stood up for the love of a man not in her life.
Doing what was best for her, doing what was right.

And when she dropped her hand back down, staring straight into the crowd.
She finished with a voice so soft, but its message clear and loud.
"I love my daddy very much, he's my shining star.
And if he could, he'd be here, but heaven's just too far.

You see he was a soldier and died just this past year
When asked to serve his country he went and showed no fear.
But sometimes when I close my eyes, it's like he never went away."
And then she closed her eyes, and saw him there that day.

And to her mothers amazement, she witnessed with surprise.
A room full of daddies and children, all starting to close their eyes.
Who knows what they saw before them, who knows what they felt inside.
Perhaps for merely a second, they saw him at her side.

"I know you're with me Daddy," to the silence she called out.
And what happened next made believers, of those once filled with doubt.
Not one in that room could explain it, for each of their eyes had been closed.
But there on the desk beside her, was a fragrant long-stemmed pink rose.

And a child was blessed, if only for a moment, by the love of her shining star.
And given the gift of believing, that heaven is never too far.

Lump in your throat? I'm sitting here after a bad night with acid reflux wiping tears from my eyes.

There were tears in my eyes as I read the poem about the little girl and then I thought why do people keep starting wars if all they bring is death and sadness, and then i realised. They forget about the death and the suffering and the pain and the grief. So lest we forget...
