This just relayed to me by a friend.

She used her credit/debit card to purchase gas at the pump (like most
of us do). She received her receipt like normal.

However, when she checked her bank statement, there was a $50 charge added in addition to her purchase. Upon investigation, she found out that because she did not press the 'clear' button on the pump, the employee inside the store was able to use her card to purchase his/her own gas!

To keep this from happening, after you get your receipt, you must press the 'CLEAR' button or your information will be stored until the next customer inserts their card. Be sure to tell all your friends/family so that this doesn't happen to them or you.

You would presume that the computer software should clear the transaction after you hang up the pump's hose nozzle.  However, some pumps may not do this.
I'm going to be looking for that Clear Button from now on.

I was warned about that by a checker in a grocery store when I used my debit card. I have been doing that at most stores but didn't think about it at a gas pump, Thanks.

This crap is everywhere now. I rented a room at a very top end motel on a company meeting. I paid with my debit card but they requested my master card as security. I thought, no big deal.

I was handed a door swipe card & did my thing. When leaving, I left my door swipe card in the room and it was picked up by a room cleaner who sold it to an employee that pulls the info off the card by swipeing it in the reception office when no one is looking. There is where he got my credit card number. He used it one time for an on line purchase & was caught.

Now I take my swipe card and wreck it at home.

I do the same, I take it home and kill it with scissors or something. Never leave them in the hotel rooms.

However, I made a point to ask the clerks at the Calhoun, GA hotel what information was on the swipe card. She said only the room number.

I queried her as to my credit card info. Again, she replied that no, the credit card info computers do not talk to the one that makes the swipe card for the doors.

Dunno if she is correct or not. I still took my swipe card home with me.

I have always done the same. I just don't trust anyone, when it comes to my personal information, when traveling.

I usually take the time to check those things out.   Every time I don't, I get a "gotcha".

It only makes sense that the programming should clear the transaction as soon as the pump handle is restored to its' home position.

I still check my bank every day though to see what has transpired.  There have been a few occasions where I have caught over charges.  The banks are quick to fix that though after you report it.

Hmmmm,

I suppose I am.  But I have set up flags in the bank's software to email me the balance daily of every account that I have.   I make a mental notice of those balances and if they don't change from day to day, all is well.  On the other hand, if one of them goes negative all of a sudden, as happened to me once.  I go straight away to the bank's web site and investigate.

Awfully embarrassing when you forget about an auto debit you set up a year ago and it floats through without warning :stumped:.    I changed my ways after that.   Everything now hits the credit card first. Then I pay it off before the interest charges are incurred.  A little buffer if you will ...

Last year, I saw what I thought was a 'double charge' on my CC statement from a gas station.  I contacted the station manager, who looked up the charges in question.  He said there was two charges for exactly the same amount, from the same pump, on the same day, within a couple hours of each other.  I checked my receipts and sure enough, my wife and I had both gotten gas that day and the 'double charge' was legit.  How often does that happen?

You will find that there may be additional money in limbo when you use pay at the pump, when you use your card at restaurants, etc. This is not fraudulent, but rather how the process works as they hold a certain amount temporarily. It can be a surprise, however, if you get an overdraft charge.  I did a quick search and found this link with an explanation:

I had heard that all of your info is on the room key card, and I also heard that to clear them off before you return them, all you have to do is run a magnet over them to clear them.
I thought who would remember to carry a magnet for that reason, but it just happens the last road trip we went on,right before leaving our room I thought of it and I swiped the card 4 or 5 times threw my cell phone case which has a magnet lid on it.
I went outside the room and tried to open the door and it had cleared it for sure.
I was told your info stays on the card until the next person rents the room.I just paid with good o cash the last time anyhow,so no worries.

Thanks Rupert for the additional info.

The internet has made it very easy for information to circle the globe. Correct or incorrect, it circles the globe just as fast.

In fact, I have it on good knowledge, that the more incorrect and the more gaudy the info, the faster it can circle the earth! :cooldevil:

When I stayed in a Holiday Inn at New Smyrna, FL we were warned to keep our key cards in a different pocket than our cell phones because the cell phones would erase the info on the cards. One time I forgot about it and had to get the card reprogrammed by the desk. I'll bet that their cards aren't the only ones that can be erased by being near a cell phone.
