I got home from a great week long fishing trip to find out that a good friend & his wife hit a deer while riding their Harley. Allan was a long time goldwing rider up until last year when he decided to try a harley.

Anyways he is in one hospital with 14 fractures to his ribs, a shattered left shoulder & several bruises, cuts & scrapes while his wife is in another hospital 80 miles away with a broken leg which has now had a pin put in it & a broken wrist. Her breathing tube was just taken out after a week. Linda has suffered with MS for several years & has had some difficulty walking before so it will be misserable for her now.

I guess the good thing is they lived to ride another day. I just had a visit with Allan today & he is already looking for a new bike.

I hate it when this kind of thing happens. My wife loves to ride with me but is terrified of hitting a deer as we ride a lot of back roads. Because of this we very seldom ride at night.

:toast:

Gary, sorry to hear of your friend's mishap. Prayers go out to both of them.

Maybe we should all ask Mother Honda for an HUD displayed FLIR for Deer system on the new 1800's.

I'm sorry to hear of this also.
Deer ARE the main reason I don't ride at night around here! The state went and cleaned up the right-of-way on I-55 and planted grass them suckers love so you can guess where you can find deer now.

Thanks everyone. I'll be seeing Allan againg today. Allan is a big tough guy so I'm thinking by spring he will be on the road again. I'm just hoping his wife Linda is as strong willed as Allan & wants to continue to ride.

I know that there comes a time in everyones life that the decision has to be made.

My father  who is 78 rode bikes for the better part of his life. I remember riding behind him when I was a child & the thrill of the ride & the wind in my face.

He has always been vertically challanged ( short ass ) & decided about 5 years ago to sell his 1100 goldwing when he dropped it over riding into his driveway.

It breaks my heart to see his eyes when he looks at my bike. I know he yearns for the days when he too felt the breeze on his face and the ache in his butt from a long hard ride.

Thanks for listining guys.

Our thoughts and prayers are with them. I feel for both of them deeply.

I also hit a deer in'04 and broke 10 ribs among other injuries.

Best wishes and hoping for a speedy recovery.

So sorry to hear that! Hey we are nearly neighbors! Where I work, I have heard and seen a number of accidents where people hit deer over the summer. It's scary out there for sure. My nephew was just in a serious accident almost a month ago and I told about it in this post.       http://goldwingfacts.com/forums/forum4/53984.html

All the best to your friend and his wife.:waving:

Same here. I lost my first Goldwind in NC, on hwy 19 12.2 miles out of Bryson City, and a deer helped total it. I will not ride in any deer infested areas at night and I'm weary of them in the daylight/dusk/ or the wee morning hours, unless it's in the city area, but now, the deer are getting into the urban areas here, and it's getting worse every year. I guess that probably goes for everywhere. There should be a law passed that deer can be shot if in the city areas, but that would be a nightmare. I guess all we can currently do is to use deer wistled/alarms. (Or Radar)
