Upon opening my company email this morning, I was greeted with this message in my  inbox.   I have omitted all critical (HIPPA type stuff) but the tone of the message is still there.
Hello fellow employees:

I wanted to provide you with a brief update on the budget. Unfortunately, the economy continues to decline and the company's budget is not improving. Nationally, and even internationally, the economy is falling.

During next Tuesday's Policy Session, the Budget Director  and I will review proposed budget options. There are not enough dollars coming in to pay for everything we are doing now.

I have severely stripped this memo of info identifying my company, but as you can see, it would appear that some where inside our organization, there is going to be concern for having a job in the upcoming weeks.

I hope that none of our Forum Members are presented with having to look for new employment in this time of severely restricted new opportunities.

Well I hope your Job is safe John, times is getting hard and there is not a lot any of us can do about it at the minute.

Lady Tanygaer has been saying she needs more housekeeping as the food is all going up in the shops.. Milk is up to £1.30 for four pints, and we go though about 4 pints a day...

Nothing is ever definite or "poured in concrete" as we say on this side of the pond.

For myself, I have tenure and am due for retirement next year.  Worst case, I will have to accept early retirement.

My company has been here before about ten or twelve years ago, and at that time several employees were given retirement incentives and most were accepted.

It is hard to refuse to retire and continue to have an income, if your buddy next to you (with 2 or 3 new babies) would loose his job if you don't retire because he is low man on the seniority list.

Some of you may recall that my son, just this year, took a voluntary out from his company because he did not have any children, and his working partner was low man and would have lost his job.  His partner had a newborn child and 3 youngsters to care for.

I am happy to report that my son, while enduring a very stressful period of a couple of months, did secure an extremely good job with a higher salary than he had with the old job.

Sometimes, things work out.  Other times, it is just tough all the way around.

As long as people require clean water to drink and toilets that flush, I will have a job. One of the reasons I chose Water Utilities was that it is pretty much inflation/recession proof.

Looking like I should know in a few weeks if my job transfers over to the new system being implemented or not. Nerve wracking to be in the dark for sure.

I've seen the automotive repair business slowly decline for about two years ago. Even with costs rising the profit margin has dropped severely. The clientale base has nearly doubled to just make the same profit I made two years ago. Have two jobs rejected just today because the new too me customers want to make monthly payments. They can't get a bank loan, credit cards maxed. Hate turning down work but can't afford to support them also or at least take the risk. My job is secure if I play my cards right and keep my wife (Trouble) out of the malls. lol.:waving:

I keep getting just enough work to give me hope, but not enough to get me ahead. I have put in applications about 2 months ago, but got no replies, and that was even from Walmart.

Chances are if things don't improve, I'll be flipping burgers at McDonalds. This is getting very serious, and if the Stock Market keeps falling we'll jump right thru the recession stage and go straight into an depression.

What happens when half the people on the power grid can't pay for the electric to their homes? Everyone get shut off?

John, I hope what ever happens at your work place you can do what you need to do. If you can stay working and that's what you want to do, good. But if you'ld rather retire and then enjoy life with the wife, good to that too.

I consider myself lucky to be in the transportation industry. Any way you look at it, there have to be trucks going up & down the road. The brutal truth to it is "If the trucks stop, so does everything else".

Ouch!  Sorry to hear that one cymru.

In my case, I didn't mention that if I have to retire, I will go bankruptcy as my house payments are twice what my retirement check will be.

I got caught like a huge number of folks with medical bills, debt consolidation, etc... and a 2nd mortgage almost as large as my 1st mortgage.

Didn't matter last year, I was doing good and working 60 hour plus weeks. The overtime pay made it all seem frivolous.  Not so now.  My house has been on the market since April and only 5 people have walked through it.  And that was more than 3 months ago.

Folks have simply quit trying to buy a house, or because of the recent bank problems, just simply cannot get a new mortgage.

So, just one paycheck short of being insolvent; I just go on pretending "it will all go away".  There isn't anything else that I can do.  Just live with it day by day, hoping that something will straighten all of this mess out.

From a practical stand point, if I do have to retire prematurely, I will be talking to the bank holding my mortgages (both in same bank) and working out lower payments in lieu of bankruptcy.  I already know for a fact they don't need another house on their list of "owned properties".
Ever hear of Countrywide Home Loans?  :jumper:

Who hasn't?

Some many people just don't realize that there are many, many good people that are just one check away from disaster.

I'm very lucky, my house is paid for, but only because of a brother in law passing away unexpectedly a couple years back.

If it wasn't for an insurance settlement that we didn't know was coming, I would have been living in a tent months ago.

I know that there has been a rise in the reports on tv news that suicides are on the rise.

Who would figure?

Not me though, I'ld take some bankers and those types out, but not myself. :cheeky1:

My job at the Motorcycle salvage shop is the least secure job I've ever worked at.......funny thing about that is it's also the one job I love the most that I have ever worked at! It's like my dream job. So I just enjoy every day while I'm there. Although I am more and more valuable to them by the day. In August we had a parts guy quit and they haven't replaced him yet because we have managed just fine with me stepping up and helping more and taking parts calls. I love learning more and I'm a real do it all girl there now. :coollep:

I hope things work out for you John.

My company is cutting back as well. 13% in labor across the board. Five reps will be leaving in the central part of the nation. Two have already accepted early retirement. That leave three of us to go. I think I am okay but you never know. Should find out mid Nov.

John, I work for at&t as a service tech, and it's  not a very secure feeling for me. I wonder about the financial strength cuz they bought a bunch of other companies and if things slow down, there will be layoffs and might get rid of employees and use contractors to do the work.  My neighbor has worked for Sea-Ray boats for 25+ years and they're shutting down till January, and they they shut down for 6 weeks this summer. Also if companies go bankrupt lots of times the retirement programs get flushed too.

Wish us all well, and let's pray that things start improving
