I work at a hospital but I don't have a real sense or false sense of security. I love my job and hoped it would be recession-proof, but anyone in NC can be fired at anytime for any reason. Lets hope that's not the case. People will always need hospitals, but hospitals can scale back too.
I don't see any cutbacks in the near future but I'm not going out and buying a new 1800 anytime soon.
So far...(knock on wood) my wife and I are both working, making good money, have only a mortgage and car payment that is easily achievable, so it could be alot worse and we consider ourselves very lucky.
I've seen downturns in the economy before...but not quite like this one. I hope & pray everyone gets through this mess and keeps their jobs and homes.

At least you are given information and a heads up on what may be to come, most of the time it is a total shock to the employees. A fair warning to some is like lighting a fuse

Nice to hear most people are smart enuff not to live beyond their means... Some people have to remember just because your making good money this week, next week might be differant.. Luckily we only have the morgage left to pay for and 0 balance on our CC's... That help explain why I drive a 99 bike and truck and Da Boss has an 86 bike and a 2003 car... Might not be keeping up with the Jones's, but if something happens we will be fine...

Working in our nation's "RUST BELT", there is no job security. We've been cutting back and removing machinery to send to Mexico to help support the Global Economy.
I couldn't even give Tom a sure reservation for Calhoun till late July, and I'm senior in my craft at work.

The company I work for which is Spanish owned just layed off 150+ at our plant alone and we are number 2 in the world at what we do. There is at least another 1000+ before my number gets drawn for the big unemployment lotto . Memo's have been flying for weeks now on cost reduction and no over time at all.
It will get worse before it gets better. I just hate it for those folks who just did or where about to retire and dependant on their 401k.
hope everyone fares well
Ride Safe, Ray

Folks, you gotta remember that in this New Corporate America, there is no longer such a thing as job security.

Money in the bank is very good as long as there is a bank. Are bank holidays in our future? If a bank fails our deposits are insured, what do we do while waiting for the government to get us that insurance money and will it be a check in the mail?
There were bank holidays in the 1930's. Hope it all gets better

| To anybody out there, The company I am working at is looking for a couple of detailers. If you have ever detailed miscellanous steel or structual steel, PM me and let me know. The pay is very good and the benefits are exceptional.

USA becoming a Socialist Society?
The only thing certain is ... uncertainty it seems. From what I'm reading, the financial system is all based on trust and credibility. This nation's government has lost both and the world is passing judgment on us.
God help whomever is elected president, I heard on a morning talk show that Obama is having his worries --- he is worried that he might actually be president and inherit this mess and be expected to fix it. With the speed of the internet, I'm wondering how long people will give him to try before passing judgment.
Good Luck to everyone who has a job and who is looking for one! (myself included)

Jennifer wrote: My job at the Motorcycle salvage shop is the least secure job I've ever worked at.......funny thing about that is it's also the one job I love the most that I have ever worked at! It's like my dream job. So I just enjoy every day while I'm there. Although I am more and more valuable to them by the day. In August we had a parts guy quit and they haven't replaced him yet because we have managed just fine with me stepping up and helping more and taking parts calls. I love learning more and I'm a real do it all girl there now.
I miss my old job repairing bikes day in and night out. It just didn't pay enough though with two kids in the cradle. It's hard to get guys to work for buttons these days and I had one guy who was happy enough to be paid in Guinness of course that was in the 1990's when men were men and women expected more...than Guinness on the table for supper. Good times though, listening to Men at Work and so on.
Enjoy the work Jennifer, it's great to have a job you enjoy. Your enthusiasm comes through and everyone benefits and time flys when you are having fun.

Here, Cabelas has hired 5 new people (permanent jobs), in the last month. Wages are ok, not great. Some benefits, medical and dental. The have a 401, if you call that a retirement plan.
All at the gun counter. Seems guns are still selling.

AVA AUTO TECH wrote: I've seen the automotive repair business slowly decline for about two years ago. Even with costs rising the profit margin has dropped severely. The clientale base has nearly doubled to just make the same profit I made two years ago. Have two jobs rejected just today because the new too me customers want to make monthly payments. They can't get a bank loan, credit cards maxed. Hate turning down work but can't afford to support them also or at least take the risk. My job is secure if I play my cards right and keep my wife (Trouble) out of the malls. lol.
Tony,
Learn to play the game. Don't just give them the $500.00 fix they really need. Add in a new stereo, mag wheels and a paint job. Give them a sub prime loan that makes it cheaper than the original repair they needed. Sell the loan to an international banker and get a kick back.
Take the kickback and buy a new GL 1800. Then go to the government and show them you don't have any money and they will give you a few billion as a bail out.
It may sound stupid but it has worked quite recently.
