Heh . . we have an SUV, and a big truck.  Truck tows toys, hauls firewood, and goes anywhere in the PA snow.  SUV gets Mrs. W#1 to work everyday, and goofs off a bit on the weekends.

Neither rig requires approval from anyone. :)

SUV's have a great purpose when bought and used for that purpose. However, if you feel empowered by your vehicle you need to reconsider why you bought it.

A large number of people who own these huge vehicles to do their daily city driving and have no other purpose for them are mostly a nuisance to the rest of us. They help keep gas prices higher as they demand much more fuel then most other vehicles and so many people now own them.

Their are many options that are not as much of a strain on the rest of us. Many get good gas mileage, don't take up an unusual amount of space and have a smaller presence on the road.

I also feel that if your going to own a vehicle that size you should have to have a special license to prove that you have the driving skills and knowledge to drive one safely. As for the smaller SUV's that's open for debate.  I would be more then happy to get an endorsement for my license to drive even my smaller one.  Only because their are so many people driving these huge vehicles that can't drive a compact car safely let alone an SUV.

However, I do get a say whether you like it or not when the ownership of your vehicle has a negative affect on the rest of us.  Such as higher gas prices, higher insurance and lowered visibility on the road. Those who feel they have a right to own what ever they want need to realize their rights should not affect others negatively.  You have the right to own what you want, I have the right to say you need an endorsement to drive it. Teenagers should never drive these things. I know many wont like that opinion but we require many endorsements on licenses to drive certain vehicles IE motorcycles, why not these?

Ok, I had my coffee and here it is.

The same could be said for the owners of Corvettes, Mustangs, any early muscle car. Blame high gas prices on the government not allowing us to drill where the oil is, and KEEPING us dependent on foreign oil. Blame higher insurance rates on individual actions. Personal responsibility? Hello? Your argument could be used with any commodity. Maybe we should ration, or limit everything? THAT would drive prices down? Worked well for the Carter administration and the "gas shortage". :cheeky1:

I saw a big tough pickup that appeared to be tricked out for heavy hauling down lumber trails but it had alloy rims with extremely low profile tires.

Made me think of a football player wearing high heels.

To each his own. I look at choppers the same way. It's an art form not transportation.

Am I paying for it? Nope

Am I driving it?      Nope

Is it hurting me?   Nope

Is it any of my business? Nope

I have been reading this threat with great intrest.

Everyone hase a right to buy and use what they want.

A lot of people knock the suv or 4x4 driver for the low mpg that the vehicle gets.

ok for the rant:D

I have 2 landrovers and a gl1500 motorcycle

My motorcycle does about 40 mpg seats 2

my 2001 disco 2 gets 32 on a run, get me about 600 miles (21 gallon tank) seats 7 (in comfort) and tows our caravan for miles

my 90 does 13 mpg (on gas so same cost as 26 mpg petrol) gets me to and from work during the winter months and used off road when i fancy going out to play ( i do greenlaning which is legal and fun)

Now if you look at some family cars you find the mpg is the same as our wings and in some cases a little better for the same size engine.

Now let us look aat parts

Disco 2 headlamp with bulb just cost me £32 . the last vauxhall headlamp i got for work cost us near £150...both from a main stealer. What will a  headlamp cost for the 1500 or 1800 wing?

Vauxhall air filter /oil filter and fuel filter cost 30 notes

disco 2 ..2 oil filters (one a rotary) air filter, fuel filter and sump washer costs me £15.25. For my wing a air filter, oil filter 6 plugs can be got for £40

for less than £150 i can complety rebrake my disco (disk and pads and handbrake  shoes.  My work  volvo S80 was near £400. I have just replaced my brake pads on my 1500 and they cost me £43 from my local bike shop. not replaced the disks but i know they not cheap.

So next time anyone who has a few mins to spare go out and price some spare parts up for some of the cars that are so called "green" i know you will find they cost a lot more than a lot of proper 4x4 parts..

Rant over

Also price the disposal costs of the high tech batteries that are so darling to the greeners.

I Live in Montana. 4WD is a must. My everyday vehicle is an Mercedes-Benz ML320 SUV. I bought it because cars just do not fare well in MT. I also enjoy many passtimes that basically require soemthing other than a passanger car and I don't allways want to pay for the gas in my 1984 F150. (Which is a beast by the way. No stopping that thing!) But I do understand what you're saying. There's no sense in these people who live in a city or suburbia USA to drive an SUV. If you've never covered it in mud you probably don't need it.

my 90 will outlast a lot of the so called green cars.

its a 1984 but its on a 1987 plate (was a united nations vehicle and not placed into service) and now stands at just under 169,000 miles.  i take it through rivers upto the bonnet and ive even pulled cars out of floods last winter.

my disco 2 has 107,000 miles on the clock, does not used oil or waters and still pulls like a train

Ugly?? Not to my eye. If I could afford one I'd buy it just to rattle the green weenies who can't / won't mind their own business.

Give me liberty or get out of my way!!!!
