It's my opinion, and many won't agree, but there are too many people driving SUV's. A truck, whether it's a pick up truck, or van or an off road capable utility vehicle is a tool. It is designed to do work. It is made to accomplish a job. But there are way too many on the road. People like them because they sit up high. They can see over the traffic. (blocking the view of everyone not in them) People feel secure in them. The problem is that it is a false sense of security. People feel secure, and so they behave badly. But they aren't really secure. Ford Explorers rolled over in accidents when tires blew out. Tires have been blowing out since cars were first made with rubber tires. Several years ago, my wife was in an accident. She was in her Honda Accord, and she hit a mini van. It rolled over. I was just watching the news tonight. Someone in a Scion hit a full size SUV and it rolled over and killed two occupants. A mother and small child. No doubt, that the mother felt like she was protecting her child by being in a large size truck. Some time ago, I was talking to a guy that I know. His wife drives a large SUV and his attitude was, I don't care if I hurt other people on the road, I want my wife and kids to be safe. It seems to me that he's putting his wife and kids in danger. Anyway, it just ticks me off.

Well I have a Lincoln Navigator, I didn't purchase it for safety. I purchased it for the room it has, it will hold seven people without being on top of each other. I respect what your saying but really don't understand your view. Accidents are accidents, no means to have one. Some vehicles are safer than others in an impact, but death doesn't come to the driver passenger just because they are in a truck or SUV. There are a lot of factors involved regarding injuries and damage to a vehicle. If people are purchasing trucks and SUVs only because they feel it will be safe, they are indeed misinformed.

most folks up here that drive suv's because they have 4wd capability for severe weather driving. but you are right in saying most that drive them think they are safer and they are not. mini vans hadle better, hold more people, and are cheaper in the long run. myself i like cars and cycles. my favorite car is a mid 90's buick lesabre, great ride, good handling, and lots of room they move pretty good in the snow with proper tires too. my 2 cents.

OK...While I'm not an expert on the how's and why's people buy SUV's, or how they drive them, I have seen things done to some SUV's that I find disturbing....First there was the family station wagon, every auto manufacture built one, or two...Some small ones, such as the Ford Falcons, etc....They were designed to do something that the regular family 4 door auto couldn't do...Carry passengers and with the back seats down, you could haul all kinds of stuff....Well over the years these station wagons became too small to haul some things so the auto manufactures started looking at truck frames with a box designed to haul more stuff and then they started making them fancier, extra windows, seats, bigger A/C units and thus was born the SUV..... Now I see SUV's of every made, model, and size where I work, and here is my observation on some of these SUV's...The younger generation loves the 22" wheels with those flat run tires....Or then there are those who put the "lift kits" under them...These two things make their SUV taller and "looking good", but here is what they fail to realize....It makes these SUV's easier to turn over as they have now shifted the center of gravity higher...This is not only SUV's but some cars and pickups.....Our last patrol vehicles had a warning label on the sun visor about not getting those small SUV's past a certain degree of angle, as they would turn over.... I won't say most, but a lot of SUV owners never read that warning and think that if they get into a 9 line bind on the streets they can whip it around as if it were a low slung sports car.....Guess what???? gravity takes over and there is a great possibility that if they are not seasoned drivers, that SUV is going to be on its side.....I own a Jeep Grand Cherokee and I did go up one size from the factory tires to a wider tire, no its not 4 ft off the ground, just raised it about 2 inches....Jeep approved this change over....I drive very defensive because I know that even with factory tires this Jeep can become very top heavy if I drive it like I would a Corvette.... So I believe that any one that buys any size SUV should sign a waiver stating that the dealership has made them aware of the dangers associated with owning and driving an SUV.....SUV's are nice to own, they give you that extra room to carry all those plants mom buys for "Your" new garden, to carry the whole soccer team to games, and all that camping gear to go deer hunting with...Yea they do have a place, but most SUV drivers have no clue as to how dangerous they can be.....They are only thinking "Bigger is Better" .....This is just my .02 cents worth...... Claude.....

I'm sure there are drivers of SUVs that feel the same way about us on our motorcycles which are inherently more dangerous than an SUV. That's how I feel anyway. My wife drives an 08 Ford Explorer that has been from Courtland MS to Santa Barbara CA and back, averaging 23 mpg in comfort. We carried a lot more luggage in that than we could have in the car she used to own. I like it. It drives good and is quite comfortable and the main thing is....it carries all her "nursing" stuff, from her supplies to all the paper work she has to deal with. Not to mention the bags of groceries that can fit in the back!

They are real dangerous when the driver is DUI Denali strikes grandmother and 3 y/o granddaughter Marino said Jeanna Kafoury-Hobbs, 46, was speeding southbound on Ashland Ranch Road when she lost control of her Yukon Denali. The vehicle skid across the roadway, struck a light pole, a tree and then struck the woman and child. Sgt. Mark Marino said Kafoury-Hobbs was arrested. He said she showed signs of impairment.

I've always had the belief that a car or truck is a tool. It's a machine designed for a use. There are are many different tools in the box and each has it's own set of capabilties. When I was a teenager, I used to have a small tool box with just a few tools. I didn't have a set of wrenches. I had a pair of pliars and I could remove nuts with those pliars. I ruined many good nuts by using pliars instead of the proper wrench. If you are a mom and you have 3 kids and you are going to the grocery store, a Honda civic isn't going to do it for you. This is along the lines of choosing the right tool for the job. If you need a truck, then that's what you get. If you just want a truck, that's your right, so go ahead. That's ok. But when you pick the right tool, it comes with responsiblites. You don't just pick up a table saw and start cutting away. Some tools are dangerous, and they need to be treated with respect. I'm not seeing that. What I am seeing is people feel safe, so they forget about safety. I'm picking on moms a little bit, and I don't mean too, it's just a good example. But I drive a motorcycle, arguably the most dangerous vehicle on the road (to the driver and passenger). But I understand that danger. Everyone over the age of 12 knows that they are dangerous. I took training. I practice. I ask questions and share with other motorcyclists. I was required to take a special test that requires me to do more than someone driving a car. I don't think those mom's are intentionally ignoring the danger. I think that they don't know that there's danger. The teenager that already feels bullet proof, doesn't know that the truck is more dangerous. I don't know, I might be wrong, but based on what I see, and conversations I've had with people, I have formed this opinion. We've had many discussions on this forum about rights and responsibilities, and how society sets the parameters. I think as a society we are doing something wrong. I have driven Suburbans for the past 25 years. Most of them were 4 wheel drive, living in Wisconsin. I buy them for the safety aspect, the comfort of the ride, and the covered storage capability when needed. They were a great help, raising two sons, and our family enjoying camping and the ability to pull a travel trailer. Now, it is just me, but I will continue to drive the trucks. That's my right and I have no intention of relinquishing it, because someone doesn't think they I have purchased it for the right reason. I want all the protection I can get, as I watch a little twinkie go flying by me in a Honda civic, with her face buried in her cell phone. I also get 20+ MPG on the highway with my 4WD. Someone wants to pay for my transportation, they can dictate what I drive. He just said they drive larger vehicles to feel safe, and they are not safer if driven incorrectly. I don't think any one is saying not to buy what you want.

i hate suv's a waste of time and money people have them have to be 4x4's or 90000tons like an escalade or a big excursion and only ONE person rides in it wtf????? on the farm we had 2 trucks and i had my old 1977 dodge aspen i drove that old car like it was a ferrari i dont know why people need such large and huge vehicles are they compensating for something?
