A few weeks ago I ordered a set of new tires and paid an extra 20.00 for them to be shipped in a hurry (within 3 days), when I can't ride my bike to work I have to share my wifes car with her and it is a real pain cause we work in the same general area of town but have to report at different times and we live 50 miles away , so one has to get to work an hour and a half before the other and the other has to wait 3 hours for the other to get off .
Meanwhile my dogs are kept in the kennels from 5:30 am until6:30 pm .
You try holding it that long!!
We specified on the instructions for the packages to be left outside on the porch like we always do .
On the day we expected delivery we arrived home to find a note saying they could not make delivery without a signature , disappointed we signed the form as instructed and placed it back on the door as requested.
The very next day the note left by the driver said sorry but he could not leave the package without someone being home to sign for it .
We called the number to try and find out what the problem was an was told it was up to the drivers discression to leave the package or not under those conditions .
They wanted yet more money to take it across the street the next day to my neighbor as this was a delivery to another adderss,( another 8 or 9 dollors I think they wanted .)
As I do not tolerate idiocy very well,.. I got the wife to call somebody that could tell us what the problem was ." It seems that your address has been "flagged " she was told. What do you mean she asked ?
"It seems that someone made an insurance claim on a package that was sent to you and went missing . "
What happened was this ,,, about 3 years ago a friend of my wifes sent us a Texas Pecan Cake for the xmas holidays that was valued at about 75.00 plus shipping .
A nieghbors dog had taken it and ate most of it before we got home . We never even knew we were sent a gift until a few days before xmaswhen the sender called my wife to say" happy holidays , by the way how did you like the cake?"
She said" what cake ? "
So he called UPS made a claim and they had to pay for a new cake .
We did not make the claim , we did not know of the gift until that phone call and further more the cake was so chock full of pecans it gave me the worst diarrehea I have ever had !!! Tho it was delicious!! I did find a piece of the first cake later in the yard but no box or label.
Anyway to get my tires I had to drive about 70 miles roundtrip from my house to the Ups place while my wife sat outside on the porch of her office for 2 hours after closeing !!!
So my tires could have been sent by USPS without incident , cost half as much and arrived the same day I got them . Not to mention the cost of gas to go get them and the time my poor wife spent waiting for me . ( it was her idea not mine)
So all I got to say to UPS is UP YOURS!!!

I am also in the 'won't be using UPS' Club, but for a different reason.

I had a pair of mufflers shipped from Florida. I knowingly agreed to pay as much for shipment as I did for the mufflers. I also knew that I would have to pay some sort of tax. What I didn't know was that UPS would charge outrageous brokerage fees. About 80% of the value of the goods!!

No more UPS for me!!

I know this is kinda after the fact, and you may not have been able to do it....but why didn't you have the tires shipped to your or your wifes work?  At least you know someone would have been there, and you would have had your tires.  The only time UPS has not left a package at our door is if the sender marked the package signature required.

Its really suprising that a rural driver would not leave it for you.  I guess  everything gets screwed up when your really needing something.

Had a DHL driver drop a shipment on my porch once.

It was a 200cc chinese motorcycle motor, brand new, and my {then} 14yr old daughter was watching. Broke the left side {wet} engine case.

She picked it up and called me.

DHL drivers....they are *******....

Picasso- I completely understand your frustration. I'm not trying to say "Big Brown" is great, and everyone else sucks (neither is true, clearly), but, here are a few things you might want to consider.

Back in the "good ol" days, a driver could leave a package on a front porch, and expect that the correct person would smile upon arriving home from work, with no incident.

Vendors do, however, have a right to "defend their interests" and it only takes a few "I never got the package" calls before they start insuring anything over $100, which is the level automatically insured by UPS, and...requiring an "adult signature". Otherwise, how can they defend themselves against fraud?

In fact, in a rapidly growing number of locations, a UPS driver simply WON'T leave a package, even if you say it's "ok"...if they say they left in on the front porch, and it's gone (or you say it is) when you get home, guess who's "on the hook"? The driver, and the depot from which it was delivered. How can they prove it?

The solution is simple. When you order, SPECIFY an address where an adult will be available, 8ish am to say 5:30pm to sign for it. It DOESN'T have to be you, but it can't be your 4 year old. THE VAST MAJORITY of companies will let you specify a separate billing and shipping address...I know that Bike Bandit does, and I know that Hondaline does, and I know those groovy Canukians up in Ontario will. In fact, about the only ones who WON'T are a few computer companies who've been cheated so many times they can't STAND it, anymore! In their case, I just say "pass", and move on to a more amenable supplier.

I agree; the redirecting packages nearby should probably be free (within reason; I used to put a note on my door asking them to have my next door neighbor who is retired receive and sign) but, yes, they've decided that's a "service" they can charge for, now, even if it's easy. Follow the advice above, and you won't have a problem.

MapleWingNut- wow, I absolutely know what YOU are saying...but there's a reason for it. In order to do business in Canada, UPS had to agree to be "hard wired" into Canadian Customs; the Canadian gummint knows that your package is coming, before you do, and frankly, there's no way to avoid getting "dinged" for Customs duties. I DO agree; UPS "customs services" is an absolute rip-off; you ARE however, permitted to select your own agent/customs broker. For small packages though, it hardly seems worth it.

The Canadian Postal Service, on the other hand, is even more lax than our own (that's NOT a jab; I wish everyone's was!) and often packages sail through, without ANY duty, and definitely without any brokerage fees.

We try to ALWAYS suggest/offer USPS as the "best" option, when appropriate, and explain why (see above). There is, however, a weight and dollar value limit at which we either can't ship the merchandise, or risk seriously "taking it in the shorts", if something goes wrong.

UPS is instantly traceable; USPS is not, unless you pay for the (expensive) services above regular "Priority Mail". Btw, there no longer IS anything lower than "Priority International" to Canada, or any other country, so, don't even ask. If you are in Australia or New Zealand, and you have received a package via "surface" (2-4 months) you won't even ask why they gave it up.

Even then, I've found the USPS "tracking" to be useful but largely fictional- a package to Silverfox in the UK was shown as "delivered" when in fact, the postman simply stopped by; Pete had to go collect it in person at the post office (major hassle, no doubt). A package to Tanygaer (David in Wales) was delivered a full day before their system confirmed it as delivered, including the time difference (i.e a day and a half) I'm just pointing out reality.

I'm not "defending" anyone; we "shippers" are as frustrated about it, as you receivers. This is just offered in the spirit of trying to make your life a little less painful, ok? :waving:

PS- sorry for the diatribe...I do mean to help? ;)

I don't mind paying my taxes. (That's a lie, let me try again) I fully expect to have to pay taxes. I can even understand and accept a brokerage fee. But when I called and questioned the charge, they confirmed that it was based on a percentage of the value of the goods....like 80%. This is in addition to the taxes I had to pay.

I have received goods shipped by other carriers and have only had to pay a flat rate for brokerage. I think it was $6.50.

If I am buying from the US, and the vendor only offers UPS, I will pass. I was not aware that I could select my own broker....wouldn't know where to start on that one.

Pete, I appreciate your insight into shipping woes and your balanced response. I will still be advising any fellow Canucks to avoid UPS.

A while back I ordered a present for the wife, and had it shipped to my daughters address using my name. UPS had me in their system and decided that I did not know where I wanted it delivered so when the wife got home there it sat on the front porch with a note saying that they had corrected the address.

Motorcycle Pete I don't expect I will be haveing anymore problems ,,,since UPS does not have a monopoly on parcel delivery. We just had to make 3 phone calls to find out the problem and we had followed the drivers instructions to the letter on the first note he left.
He could have explained what the problem was in the first place anyway.

If the Vendor in the US will not ship via US postal service, I dont purchase from them.
I was once bitten by the UPS brokerage fee and will not use them or Fedex etc. USPS or nothing.
I prefer to buy in Canada anyway and local if possible.
Most of the stuff is Chinese anyway :)

Just another side of this. I know there are horror stories out there but I have done business with UPS, USPS and FED-EX for the last 18 years on an almost daily basis. Never have I had a problem with shipments or deliveries. Lucky? I guess!

One of the replies mentions having the package shipped to work. Make sure it's okay with your employer first. There's no reason your employer should pay your receiving and/or mail room people to handle your personal shipments. I know my company will not accept personal shipments, nor will they handle personal mail going out.

Absolutely, John-

You should ALWAYS check first, with your employer. Some of us, without Union benefits? work for small companies; if you ask nicely, they generally don't mind.

In my case, the "extra labor" involves signing for 10 packages, instead of 9, and shouting (to me, 10 feet away) "Hey, Pete! You got some goodies!" :cheeky1:

I'm a "loner" type, I really am, and I can think of at least 10 people/places I could have a package delivered, rather than have them leave it on my front porch, ready to be picked off by the first loser who comes along.

Understand the situation (and risk), and be creative...that's all I'm saying. :waving:
