Well... this is simply something I thought I would never have to face. Since being laid off from work the bills have piled up and eaten up our savings. With things in the maritime industry at a virtual standstill all the inquiries and applications have yielded no response. Been a Boat Captain all my life and never seen times this bad. Long story short.... we're only a month in arrears with the rent but the landlady is adamant about continuing with the evicton process. She hasn't filed the paperwork with the court so we have time to sure the arrears, but not much time. Spoke to her this morning and tried to reason with her, but to no avail. I know zero about how it works but I can assume that the courts give heavy favor to the property owners. We've been in the house for almost 4 years and this is the first time we've been in arrears like this. Were I single, it would be of little consequence. Being a guy I can live in a cardboard box if need be. But being a family man with two kids and a grandbaby in the house it's quite a bit more serious. It's taken its toll on the wife and she is about as stressed out as I've ever seen her. Right now I'm in New Orleans, beating the bushes at all the boat companies I can find. The closer I am to the action I figure the better the chances of being able to get back to work. Don't feel right being here away from the wife and kids at such a critical time, but I really don't think I have any other options. Anyhooo.... your prayers for strength and guidance will be most appreciated. I'm at my wits end here and cannot think of any alternatives. Hard to fathom the prospect of the wife and kids being out on the street. Thanks all!! There is nothing I hate hearing more than this type of situation and having gone through it and still at risk. I can suggest some ways to save some money but if you are not making rent, you don't really have the option to save money a few months from now. I will recommend that you assess any skills you have and not be narrow in the types of jobs you will take. I know several that are resurrecting old skills and using those to get into anything that will have you. Don't be shy about unemployment if that is available to you. That is the only way we are making house payments, now. Feel free to talk and ask questions. You aren't alone and you aren't the first down this path. It will get better. It always does.

Thanks Rudy.... Unemployment is not an option since the last job was a contract job and not subject to the employer having to pay UI taxes. Believe me, if it were an option I'd be on it in a heartbeat.

Right now the only thing I have of real value that would help is my bike. If I sell that I'm losing my primary means of transport to and from work. So it's a Catch-22 situation.

Unfortunately we're pretty much alone where we are. Seems like everywhere I turn there's a roadblock. Never lose hope, but desperation has a funny way of creeping up on you.

Prayers sent up from Bama for you buddy. Seems far too many people are facing this situation these days. You would think folks would work with you to keep you as a tenet. What I know of your situation is they have to serve you with 30 day written notice and then the sheriffs office will come to remove you after it is awarded. Ask for a stay if you can to give yourself more time, the judge may award it to you! Best of luck with finding a job! Jeff

You would think folks would work with you to keep you as a tenet. I saw this post , read it, said to me, Kit stay out of it. Then decided maybe I can help. It will do you no advantage to go see a lawyer, all it will do is give you another bill to pay. I used to have rental properties, I hated this part of it. Someone down and out on their luck , but at the same time I had obligations to meet such as the mortgage payment on the property myself. So If I was too nice I had to rob Peter to pay Paul and if Peter did not pay, then I had no choice. So I hated that part of this kind of thing. I was overjoyed when the last one sold. No more of this stuff. Landlords have obligations to meet also and the system is not real understanding in these things . As long as the landlord had met all their obligations to the tenant, and the only issue is non payment of rent or some such, not a lot you can do. The eviction notice will go through, and the sheriff will show up and you and your stuff will be set on the street. What you might do and what tenants have done in this situation when we had rentals is to go to the local Housing Authority. It may be called something else in your area, but there is some kind of housing help in your area, it is a program where if you can show loss of income they will help you by paying a partial part of the rent payment to the landlord. In some cases they pay it all. Meanwhile you may have to go get a job you do not like, just to make ends meet. I do that many times. I have been self employed all my life, no unemployment , no heath insurance, just me. Times get tuff from time to time and I will go to the temp employment office and do whatever, from work in a warehouse to cleaning up lots for builders, demolition, or mop floors. Just whatever. Do not mean to offend, just that this is real world advice and sometimes you have to do what you have to do. But there is some kind of housing authority in your area someplace, and I never had a problem working with them, as time I do evict someone, fix the place back up with fresh paint, advertise it and let it sit a month waiting for a new tenant, I was just as good off accepting the partial payment, and working with the tenant over time. That is what I used to do. Sure glad I am not into that anymore, this was always the bad side of things, never enjoyed it at all. Kit

Prayers sent from Oklahoma. I can't offer any thing else in advice but it sounds like Kit has the skinny on this. Don't limit yourself to a captains position.

At this point I'll take anything as far as work is concerned for sure. But I don't think it will remedy the immediate issue of the back rent. Work will come, I know that from experience...always has, always will. I'll speak with the landlady again today, just trying to reason with her. I CANNOT even imagine the prospect of my wife, kids, and grandbaby out on the street.

If you can use my CX500 for work commuting, go ahead and sell the GL for some relief and you can use my CX for as long as you need it (years if need be). You will have to insure it but after that you are welcome to use it free. It has new tires and mufflers on it. ...what Kit said... and: DO NOT sell your bike if that is the case. Goto your local Social Services office. I'm certain in that area of the country there may be a line and a wait, but it may prove fruitful. If you are part of a church in your community, their mission is to help their brethren in times of need, no matter the denomination. --------------------------- Whatever you do for work (or the lack of it) don't get idle, stay active in its pursuit. Even if it seems like you're spinning wheels and getting nowhere. Idle tiime is time for the devil himself, and he can be merciless. Meeting people and networking (I know, I hate the word too) is a crucial factor in the unexpected. Things have a way of working-out for those that keep-gettin'-up. Doing nothing (not that you are or would) allows that down-hill ball to gain speed, momentum and size. Nobody wants that for you, or themselves.
