I have used both AVG and Avast.
I have Avast on this laptop I'm using now.

What I have found is that Avast updates on a regular basis, anywhere from daily to twice a day and the notification can be turned off.

AVG is easier to shut down when you need it to be. On my desktop, I created a "gaming" profile and was able to "disable" AVG in the Window's Services panel where as Avast would not allow that. But even when I boot that pc into the gaming profile, I still have shut AVG down with the task manager. I wound up just uninstalling AVG on that computer as I don't use it for the internet. What a difference in performance!

But I prefer Avast on this laptop as it updates regularly plus throws up a warning on some sites that could be questionable. AVG has never done that and plus it wants to install a tool bar as well when you do install it. No need for that!

Remember to go get your license for Avast once it is installed. It doesn't cost anything but you have to go through the registration.

I think that is not quite true...I haven't registered mine, and it seems to work quite well...I recall that it MAY try to remind me register each time I go for a program version update, however... little price to pay for a great tool...:3sum:

I used AVG for few years but switched to Avast nearly 2 years ago and found it to be better with daily (more than once updates.

Avg asked me to restart every time after an update.  Maybe this is not normal.

AVG used to do this to me a few years back. Something to do with dumping temporary files and I got tired of that so I dumped it for AVAST.

It didn't do that with the latest version I had but it also failed to update like it used too.

So I am staying with AVAST on this computer, nothing on the desktop since it isn't online anymore.
