In the old days, police officers wrote traffic tickers primarily to keep people safe and to prevent citizens from breaking the traffic laws.
But in the new Amerika, all of that has changed. Now traffic tickets are primarily viewed as a revenue raising tool for state and local governments. For example, a federally funded ticketing blitz in the state of Virginia resulted in a total of 6996 traffic tickets being handed out this past weekend. This most recent ticketing blitz is part of a campaign code-named "Operation Air, Land & Speed". Last Saturday and Sunday state troopers were ordered to absolutely saturate Interstate 95 and Interstate 81 and to issue as many traffic tickets as humanly possible during those two days. Why? Well, it turns out that the state of Virginia has a 2.2 billion dollar budget deficit that they are trying to deal with, and so they need to find some quick sources of cash.

You see, state and local governments all over the nation are massively jacking up traffic fines and are starting to write a lot more tickets in an attempt to "enhance" their streams of revenue.

In other words, state and local governments across the U.S. are broke and so they need some suckers to prey on.

Not that it was ever a good idea to break the traffic laws. But now even a minor violation can put a massive hole in your wallet. For instance, driving as little as 15 miles an hour over the speed limit in Virginia can get you a reckless driving charge that can carry a fine of up to $2500.

So why the hefty fines?

Well, the law increasing the traffic fines in Virginia clearly admitted why they are so high....

"The purpose of the civil remedial fees imposed in this section is to generate revenue." (Virginia Code 46.2-206.1)

I am getting the feeling that the terrorists have won. More government everywhere. More big brother everywhere.

They are doing their best everywhere to up the stakes. Around here they are putting up red light cameras faster than you can run a red light.

They pay nothing, a private company puts the cameras up for a %.

Four years ago on New Year's eve the spy in the sky got me and about a dozen other cars on I75 in Pasco county.

They had about ten troopers pulling two cars over at a time. The man that pulled me over was STANDING in the middle of I75.

I still say it was Nancy's fault.

I got a ticket in 1980 in Virginia on I-77 north doing 126 in a 55, back then the ticket was $275.  It probably would had not been so bad if I had not been such a smart a** when he asked if I knew how fast I had been going, and I replied that no, because the darn speedo only went to 85 and I still had a quarter inch of throttle.:cheeky1:  Sure am glad that I've learned to slow down!:clapper:

From the beginning of traffic laws fines have been seen as a revenue producer as has parking fines. There were speed traps in towns when my father was driving a brand new Model A. Here in Oregon the town of Coburn on I-5 was infamous for it's expanding the town limits to straddle I-5 so their town cops could tag traffic for speeding, some tickets were issued for 3mph over the legal 65. It was so bad the State shut them down. Ruston, WA is a town next to the city of Tacoma. The main drag into town is a steep hill. The town line is halfway down the hill. At the town line the speed limit drops from 35 to 25 for no discernible reason other than to facilitate the issuing of tickets by the cop that sits behind a sign a few yards inside the city limit. That was going on in 1950 and earlier. Nothing new with this.

I have been in a fuss with the police on the GL1800riders over this stuff for the past two months .

You will never beat city hall.

Go get you a good radar detector and learn to use it.  I am even learning how to use the traffic to bounce the lidar and real radar off them and know they are using that.

Virginia is the one state they are illegal in.  And within the city limits of Washington DC.

Everywhere else is open to use.

Normal city and county speed sensing equipment ,I know they are there in plenty of time.

The newer point and shoot radar ..........well  no defense on that much, but you can pick it up if you are not being the lone wolf.

I like to follow the rabbit on the interstate.  The radar will bounce off the rabbit.

About 3 years ago, I think, it was even worse to get a ticket here in Va. because, if you were a resident, you not only paid the initial fine but you had to pay it again for the next 2-3 year's!!!

I think the law was only in effect for about 6 month's or so before it was challenged in court and thrown out because no one from out of state had to pay the extra fines.

Just the resident's of Virginia.....:whip:

A couple of drivers here tried that. They both went side by side exactly 100KPH (62 MPH) along the 401, THE major highway across the province.

Needless to say they caused a traffic jam miles long. They were charged and convicted of obstructing traffic.

Re the no speed comment, just close your eyes when some SUV is riding your tail light on the highway. You'll get a ticket to your own funeral.

A local might know the speed traps but an outsider won't.

I don't have a beef with a legitimate ticket but look at the reality of how our tax dollars are being spent. This is just another coverup of the massive squandering going on in governments everywhere including here.

We don't need lower taxes, just honest ones.

If they'd fix the leaks in the boat they wouldn't have to spend all their time bailing.

while running 60 0n the 101 in CA. was pulled over by C.H.I.P and ticketed for obstructing traffic min. spd. was 50 officer said spd. limit was controled by normal flow of traffic. If traffic was flowing at 90 then anything slower was obstructing.

I once got a ticket for doing 45 in a 40. On a little two lane in the middle of the woods.
The cop was brand new and being trained by another guy who had to show him how to fill out the ticket. They were both pissed when I laughed at them, but I really couldn't argue - I was doing 5 miles and hour over the limit.

I remember the days of convoys when the speed limit was 55 on the interstate. The convoys would get to going about 80 mph. The HP's would be setting on the over passes just watching to make sure no one was acting like an idiot.

Yep, they can get you both ways. I argued that point with a Sheriff Officer friend of mine and that is what he said too. So, if you go to slow =- ticket; go to fast = ticket. Where are the darn flying cars they promised us back in the 60's and 70's?

Speed trap, speed trap, speed trap. I always hear about these "traps". Well a trap is not a trap until you "stick your foot in it". So - don't stick your foot in it.

wife and I were traveling on I-81 yesterday.  Seemed like every 5 miles, a LEO was sitting there watching.  Just kept it at the speed limit and didn't get to meet one of them personally;)
