Daryl, I'm with you, buddy! You can get some really good MPGs with a rig like you're describing! Of course, my fave is still the reverse trike, 2F1R style. That way you could use that diesle engine & transaxel just the way it was designed to be used. 'Twould be easier of course, with an automatic......just sayin'....

I agree. Those Bombardier/Can-Am Spyders for example suffer from horrible fuel economy apparently. They seem otherwise like a nice setup (expensive tho!). Imagine modifying one of them with a car engine. I noticed your reverse trike in your avatar. I checked your profile and didn't see any related threads. I don't want to hijack this thread, but can you tell us about your bike?

My question, is when you rotate the engine to the middle instead of hanging it off the back, is how do you get forward gears and only 1 reverse.
I've seen vw trikes with the engine in the middle, but he didnt make it or know how it was done.
A second question would be the front forks handling the weight, especially over BUMPS
Ive seen midengine v8's

That doesn't have either enough power, or what's even more important, RPMs. Even with the diesel power, 'twouldn't be enough.

I've reserched all the diesel MCs I can find, and they are, in general, nice oddities; they're just not pracitacle for an everyday use. IMHO, of course.

As to a thread on my 2F1R trike, it's not quite done yet. I've got some other plans for more power, as I'm hardly ever satisfied with a project untill ALL the bugs are out and it purrs like a kitten full of Goldfish at suppertime!

Smokepole, You're not turning the engine around, it's still facing the same way. The VW diesels are good for that, except then ya gotta figgure a way to clutch and shift gears from the front of the engine.

Picture a GM product front wheel drive, automatic car. Now ya take the engine and transaxel out of the car, along with the frame parts that they are mounted to. Then weld/fasten a large motorcycle front end to the front of the power assembly. Find your way to hook up all controls, run a really cool exhaust, and make or alter a body to go on over the engine/transaxcel assembly. Now you got youself a really unique, fast, and award winning trike.

sounds like a fun project, i drive a hyundai small car, 1000cc engine, those cars are used a lot down here and parts and even complete engines are cheap. i'd love to build a reverse trike.

William, if you'd like I'll welcome a phone call, or a long PM to share my reserch with you. Mutualy benifitial to be sure! I did quite a bit of investigative work at the outset of my project, back when I thought I had a unique idea. But before I could get it onto the build floor, somebody stole it! (actually, can you imagine my chagrin to find that not only was I not the originator of that idea, it went back to the beginning of the motorcycle eara!)

And as my good friend Forrest Gump would say, that's about all I got to say about that.

That sounds like it would be a gas! Hey' how 'bout an Olds Toranado front transaxel, with the stock 455HO on it! I think a little overpowering!:cooldevil:

Our Spyder delivers a reliable 31 to 33 mpg on the slab and about 27 to 29 around town. Not bad for 998 ccs and 1100 pounds wet. Now add two rather well fed folks, well ,you know the rest. We now return you to the Diesel trike.

I saw a complete Tornado powertrain put into one of those little Fiat X17 cars. It fit! they had to mold some fender flairs on the rear to keep the tires under cover.  The back of the Olds front frame assemble which is also the torsion bar mount stuck out the back about 4".  The guy disguised that by putting a trailer hitch ball on it. He had no trouble over coming traction on the rear wheels any time he wanted.
