Another feature not widely known (I suppose) is the temperature reading.

Touch the battery icon and hold it for a few seconds and various system screens come up with system and testing information. The temperature is displayed in Celcius on the first screen.

I suspect it is Garmins way of knowing what atmospheric conditions the unit was used in if warranty is ever needed.

I'd like it to display in °F, but don't know if it is possible.

What Garmin model(s) are you talking about, Captn?

I've never seen a battery Icon displayed on my unit.  :stumped:

Never mind,   ....  After thinking about it some, I think I know what you are talking about. I have mine hardwired to my bike and seldom have it off the bike, so I don't normally see that battery charge display. I'll have to play with that one.

I'm using a 1350 Dusty. I thought it worked for all Garmin models. My battery icon is shown all the time whether plugged-in or not. Here's a terrible screen capture from my less-than-pleasurable web-cam (it's the only thing handy right now).

This Page gives a list of various Garmin models and the so-called "secret" stuff they have hidden and how to access it.

I believe that is the internal temperature of the GPSr, not the ambient temperature.

I'm sure it is, but still useful. I've compared it to ambient temp and is accurate if giving enough time to equalize. It doesn't take much time for it to equalize though, which makes me wonder how they collect the temp reading. I think it is Garmins way of knowing if a screen was cooked from direct sunlight, or some other way of using the info to their advantage.

Tons of useless test-page info..

FYI, I settled on and ordered the 1350LMT.  Cheap enough I can upgrade later with no regrets if I so desire.

I've got the 255 and love it. But I'm looking to get a 1450LMT to replace it as a xmas gift. I want the unlimited map updates and traffic. Also the wider screen will be easier to read.  BTW, a freezer-style sandwich plastic baggie and a rubber band make it "waterproof".

Almost.....  After reading this thread I started diggin into it and despite the fact that I love the functionality of my iPhone mounted on my GW, the new Garmin 665 (https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=135&pID=65203) is one cool unit.  I have the WX function on my Garmin in my boat and it is better than anything I ever used, including the stuff we have in our Boeing 767's.  I know I just added another item on my list to Santa.....

Another thing to consider is the map detail since you mentioned riding the back roads. On the newer ones the map detail is a lot less. (Some call this clutter.) But when I am riding the back roads it's nice to know the little towns and other roads that are around you. I didn't know the difference untill I bought a newer one. My old lowrance 600c maps were out dated and no updates for them any longer. I bought a garman 755t and like most of the newer ones (at least  in this price range) the detail is not even close to the old lowrance at any zoom level. I talked to a guru on a gps forum and his reply was "it is what it is" since I had it set to the highest detail setting. The bigger screens may be better. Might be something to look into before your purchase if this seems important to you.

Oops. just read your last post and noticed you already purchased one so disreguard the last sentence. Other than what I mentioned I love the garman.

I have a Garmin 1450LMT and it is a piece of crap compared to my 10 year old Garmin 2730.

Both updated to the latest info, but the 1450 is just about useless for me. The damn thing keeps automatically switching to terrain mode, back and forth, irritates the hell out of me.

I set it for the range I want and then it auto flips to terrain mode at a different range. It also does NOT have decent detail. Once you back off of a 1/4 mile, you loose all of the side roads and town names instantly. POS device IMO.

I am a big fan of the Nuvi series from Garmin. My only issue with the 1350LMT and the 1450 ones are that they do not have the 3.5mm audio out jack. When I was looking for a GPS, I wanted one with the audio out jack and have noticed that fewer models now offer it. I wanted to hear the prompts in my helmet headset or on the radio. I ended up going with the Nuvi 765T as it still offered this option. I was also able to load it up with a bunch of MP3 tunes and it doubled as an MP3 player. Now it does come with a wireless FM transmitter so I could hear it on the radio but I could never get it to work without a bunch of static. But by using the audio out jack, I didn't need the FM transmitter. As far as lifetime updates, it is being sold by Garmin at a reduced price subscription for around $65 on Amazon and that is what I bought. The 765T ended up being just a tad more than the 1350 or the 1450 but it gave me what I wanted. It can be found online for just over $100. JMHO

I was on my third Garmin. I believe it was a 760. Each time I traded it in and paid the $100, the new one would last a little less longer than the previous. Garmin wanted to upgrade me but they have stopped including MP3 players on the units now (so no need for a speaker jack).

[ramble]

I took the plunge and got a 660. They gave me some credit since the previous unit didn't even last 6 months. I must admit, I really like what you get with the 660 and the way it connects to the bike (although the weather isn't warm enough to try it yet). They are throwing in the RAM mount (all 3 pieces not just the cradle), the bag and the car mounts and cords for both. It's also water proof so no more baggies for me.

I think the other unit just couldn't take the vibrations (although it is a Goldwing). I hope this one will last 10 years. Time will tell. I'll put it to the test first chance I get. No more messing with power cords either. Even the battery is replaceable. They also transferred my lifetime maps to it.

I'm going to order the $70 audio speaker cord from Ed so I can talk AND hear phone calls. I'm looking forward to Summer.

[/ramble]

I just decided to jump on here and see if anyone else had much luck with these.

That's what happened to mine too.

How long did yours last? My first Garmin lasted quite awhile. I think when they trade in for the $99, they just send you a "fixed up" one that someone else traded in. Call it refurbished. I only say that because they don't last near as long as the original one did.

I'm really optimistic that this one will last 3 or 4 years.
