Maybe we need a new thread started on the ridiculous names that have grown up with us and perhaps some members might have some history on how it came about they can share.

This one got missed over when the topic got onto "loo".

Does this have an interesting answer?

Oh it's not that far off topic, he was talking about silly brits after all :D

I've always wondered about that boot/bonet thing.  It's almost a weird as what side of the road they drive on :wtf::raspberry::waving:

Looked up boot, seems this a seat built into coaches where the driver sat....

Thanks Redbaron that sounds about right. A lot of our car words are from the times of the horse. For example, 'dashboard' we use for the instrument panel was the name of the board at the coach drivers feet positioned to stop mud from the horses feet (as the horse dashed) being thrown up and hitting him.

I couldn't find any definitive info on the boot and bonnet thing, maybe linked to the bonnet on ones head and the boots on ones feet. :?:?:?

As for the side of the road we drive on, this will have been decided way before the introduction of motor vehicles and has been attributed to the carrying of lances for combat, keeping to the left of the oncoming horse rider and allowing the use of lance/ pike or even sword, held in the right hand.

It boggles my imagination how us385south actually found a fan of his hobby on this forum but what this really proves is that, the only thing all of us actually have in common is a simple motorcycle, just an observation, or am I just a closet manhole cover queen that can only profess my appreciation this way!?!?!?

I happily admit to having looked through all the covers and enjoyed seeing them.

Might be worth snapping pictures of covers over here, because they are being stolen faster than they can be replaced for their scrap value and they are now being replaced with modern heavy duty plastic ones. :sadguy:

Yeah, I liked the Roswell shots too.  Especially the one with alien antennas in the shadow...

My wife is from the southern part of the state and she and her familt used to call the trunk the "boot end" of the car. I believe its because its the REAR of the car like the REAR of a boot??????

The 'boot' refers to the 'boot-box', or the rear area of a carriage where the 'footmen' would stand on the back of a carriage. This footman is responsible for jumping down and placing the stool/boot-box in front of the door, and then opening the door and assisting the passengers into or out of a carriage. On other carriages that area would be holding the foot-locker/trunk/chest, even many of the early cars had a box strapped into that location.
