That's it, enough is enough. This makes 4 times in 12 months she has taken a nap on me! This time, 1/16 mph and she threw me off in the dreaded sharp/steering bumpstop downhill right hander! Couldn't get my feet in front of me fast enough { you know, paddle, paddle, paddle }, and out across the parking lot I went, SOB, this is gonna hurt, hands down onto the blacktop. If I didn't have my helmet on, I would not have been top heavy! Road rashed palms. BROKE my left wrist, THE CLUTCH wrist! Not a ding on the bikes guards. Painful ride home.

Here I sit, missing a few weeks riding.

This will not happen again!

It's time these old bones realize, I don't bounce anymore!

I will not stop riding!

It's time to:

   A. Get the "trike" kit I have been researching? {"trike" kit? 2 + 2 ='s 4 ? When does 4 make a "tri" }.

or, B. Get a sidecar?

I have the wife and 2 dogs that all want to ride. One dog, I'm afraid, will not be with us much longer. She's WAY "long in the tooth", 15 yr old Lab, and can not tolerate a walk around the block anymore let alone go for a long ride. I have  just about completed restoring a trailer that I have also added a pet carrier to.

So people, when you are faced with the fact that you are no longer the "man/woman" you used to be, what will you do? "Trike" it or "hack" it. I want to keep the same bike I know and trust.  :hovering:

It depends on what you want to spend neither is cheap, sidecar your dog can ride or your wife can go to sleep with no problems, trike would be more comfortable, worth more money in long run, have more luggage room for longer trips, you can customise to your taste.

My wife won't even consider riding in a side car. YMMV

So, for me, it will be a trike.
Probably a Roadmaster conversion.

I have never driven a tricycle or a side car rig, but it would seem to me that if the question is diminishing physical capabilities a trike would make more sense.  Side car rigs bring with them a whole new set of challenges and proper setup can be elusive.

put out the extra money and have it triked.

my first solution was a voyager kit and while it did the job, I can't, with good conscience, recommend it.

a "true" trike kit will be cheaper in the long run and will ride and handle a lot better.

When the time comes for me I'll do a trike as I've ridden a hack rig and would not recommend it to anyone. JMHO:waving:

Sidecar here. More room, cheaper to complete, and easier to disasemble and sell seperately. Besides chicks dig it and dogs love it.

I've never rode a sidecar. I don't think I could get the wife to ride in one. I have the trike because of a injury and we BOTH love it.

Sidecar. You and the Mrs can ride 2-up AND have the pups in the sidecar! Yes, piloting a sidecar rig is different than a solo or a trike. It's asymetric during acceleration, braking and in the wind. It's the only land craft I can think of that you have to consider yaw. A poor setup can make for exciting turns.

But for passenger comfort, luggage capacity, head turning opportunities and the sheer FUN of it, a sidecar rig can't be beat!

We didn't have to yet, but we went with a trike.  Still have m y 1500 so can still ride 2 wheels, but we both enjoy the trike to much to take out 2 wheels very often.  Ride safe what ever your decision.

Side Car!!!! A properly set up rig is a blast to ride!!!! When I first got mine, I rode "not properly set up". I wasn't aware that the bike needed to lean 2-4 degrees to the left, so I was running straight up. Took mine to a local side car shop for an alignment, guy to me to make it lean to the left and it'll be fine.

If you do go side car, try to get one with electric lean. You'll be able to trim it to where it is effortlessly to ride. Mines got it and don't think I'd ever have one without it.

I voted Trike Kit before I read your post and realised you aren't really considering a "Trike Kit", rather a add on pair of wheels.  Those things  look like a "trike kit", but they still let the bike rock and only lean in on the most shallow turns, I mean like almost straight.  They don't allow you to lean into turns or side winds, so the bike is pushed over to the outside or down wind side to be supported by the outrigger wheels.  Braking is the same as the bike as no brakes are added, and you drive the bike by the single rear wheel which can become unloaded on uneven ground.

My first suggestion / vote would be "Trike it" for real ....
.... but  I'ld go Sidecar before I'ld have a Voyager type kit added.

 ;)
I like my Trike, I like my Bike too, I do NOT like those 2 + 2 = 4 wheel kits.  Please don't give up but do stop the wrecking.

:sadguy:
Life is the real thing, you get one pass through it, there are no dress rehearsals.

With 2 dogs and trailer and wife .... a "real Trike" or "side hack" is the way to go.  Each will require changes in habits / skills and both work better with a "fork mod" like EZSteer or etc. My belief is the Trike is easier to transition to.

With a Trike , right is right, left is left, opposite but same.

With a Side car, left is left, right is right, opposite and different.

Edit .... I changed my vote to Hack.

I have had both - a Tow Pac trike kit and now a Hannigan side car.
We loved the trike kit after I got it set up right. I could keep up with the two wheelers on the twisties no problem. EZ Steer a MUST HAVE. The problems began when my wife started having trouble getting on the seat. I manufactured running boards to give her 2 steps up. didn't help.
Had to resort to a side car. Now she is in love again. She can sleep in it, bring her knitting or a book and a blanket on cool days + her heated suit. More room for packing stuff. Found it handled better than the Tow-Pac after I got it set up right. Again EZ Steer a MUST. By the way my wife is 84. Hope this helps.

Another plug for sidecars: With a trike, you just don't get these "Awww! He's so CUTE!!" moments!
