I did an internet search of this and don't remember where I found it, but GL stands for Goldwing Line. As in Goldwing Line of motorcycles.

Honda uses the GL to designate a particular model number. There is no acronym for it. Ford Motor company, however, uses GL to designate Grand Luxury. GLS is Grand Luxury Sport.

It makes sense to me that it would be an engine designation as both the Goldwing and the Valkyrie use the same (basically) engine but mother Honda has never releases how they come about that designation.

The problem with this is that GL is not exclusive to the Goldwing - the Valkyrie line also uses GLI didn't know the Valk was a GL too.  Learn something every day.  The engine theory would work if it hadn't been for the GL500/650's, they were perpendicular v-twins.
