I'm looking at replacing my Hand Held UHF CB with a full powered remote mount unit similar to that shown here. http://www.gme.net.au/products/radio-communications/uhf-477mhz-cb-radios/TX3520 The main unit would be ideally in the boot, but could go in a side pocket (will have to consider ventilation I know). Antenna could then be mounted in the conventional CB antenna location on the left rear. If anyone has already done this, I'd appreciate a pic of the head mounting on a GL1500 for best visual appeal & user functionality. (27mhz CB is not used as much now in Australia, & the UHF band is now 80 ch) Last edited on Tue Feb 7th, 2012 10:33 pm by scons ____________________ Bob |

I have a GL1200A that did not have a factory CB and I wanted one, so I took an over the counter Uniden first, then later Cobra 40 Ch CB (Uniden broke) and made a mount to secure it to the faux tank door and formed a dark tint plexi glass top for it. It sits on 4 suction cups and a strap goes under the lid so it ain't coming off. I have a signal combiner and use the single CB / AM / FM antenna as came on the bike. I used a SWR meter and have it tuned pretty good .... good enough that when on a ride and someone breaks off to head home, I could talk to them longer than them factory CBs in the group. On the front where the 4 pin mic connector is is a 5 conductor cord (4 pins, and ground shield) that leads to a cast aluminum water tight box. I also have a two conductor cable from the exterior speaker plug in back to that box. There is a knob exiting the box that adjust a small potentiometer. Mounted on the front of the box is a flange mount 5 pin MINI DIN female recepticle for my headset. Also exiting the box is a 5 conductor (4 wires, two wrapped in ground shield) cord with a male 5 Pin MINI DIN plug that plugs into my GL1200A's normal headset plug in point. Lastly, there is a remote mount PTT switch in a small box mounted to the left side mute box that is easily pushed with a thumb. I also have 12 VDC leading into the box spliced off my CB's power lead to enable the 4PDT relay (gold contacts) to be switched with PTT. Anyway, I know you'll want better mounting maybe. I don't put this on much except when I'm going to be with other Gold Wing riders, otherwise I unplug and leave it in the basement. Following are some schematics, etc. The wide black plastic tape is very low stickum type, just to make sure no scratching from suction cups. Here's plan 1, I used Plan 2 myself. Allows full integration just like Factory CBs do, they mute the radio as soon as someone breaks squelch, etc. Attachment: CB Radio Integrater Plan1.pdf (Downloaded 12 times)

Here's Plan 2. I initially used the Plan 1 and a cheaper box, after a year I had problems with it and rebuilt it totally from scratch with better weather proofing. Thing is, all of it could be hid in a fairing pocket. See the small potentiaometer .... I have that as specified and then I added an externally adjustable one in series with it for easy adjustment. I almost forgot, I took a 3 watt rectifier diode and put the end with the silver stripe to the + hot wire and the other end to the - ground wire (grounded via PTT switch on handle bar) of the control coil terminals of that 4pdt relay to kill the very loud and annoying "POP" .... worked like a champ, no bounce or "POP" now. From the side .... yeah, I made the mount bracket / cradle, and the cover is formed from a piece of plexi I used a propane torch for het and made bends after drawing pattern with sharpie. Cover is angled so rain runs off it and NOT into / onto CB. It does not hinder access, one just has to hold the door up with the CB on it. The "integrator box" is mounted on top of the CB with VELCRO and a couple HD long zip ties for seurity, then a thin pad, and the cover wich is held on with 4 screws through rubber grommeted holes. Thanks. There's a lot of innivative thinkers around. I appreciate the time you've taken to put all that in. Last edited on Thu Feb 9th, 2012 07:18 am by scons ____________________ Bob |

Thanks Roger - yes that style will be good if I give up on trying to get the headset mike to work other than very faintly. I was contemplating a handheld mike even though it wouldnt be as convenient as using the headset. Yours would easily sit where my handheld is currently mounted giving me the option of plugging in the headset if I ever solve the mike problem. 27mhz cb is not used much here anymore, but I do recall seeing a similar UHF unit around. Thank for the idea.

Roger, can a external speaker be used with your CB? Yes, mine has an external speaker jack, and I have an external speaker connected to it. It works great. I'm adding a product description below so you you can read more about it. For me, this is the cb radio to have. They can installed real easy, and if you don't want to leave the cb on the bike, you can unscrew the cord and remove the cb, and tuck it away in your trunk. Anyway.. Here's another description for you. The C75-WXST is an all-in-handset Mobile CB with Soundtracker and weather channels. SoundTracker is the first patented technology that dramatically improves the transmission and reception of CB radio signals. The result is a cleaner, clearer sounding CB with more "powerful" transmissions and less static or noise on reception. The C75-WXST provides complete access to all 40 Citizen Band Radio channels. 10 National Weather Channels (7 NOAA and 3 International) provide full coverage to keep you informed of weather conditions anywhere you go. Remote installation box installs out of sight under your dash and the quick disconnect allows removal of the headpiece for security or use in other vehicles. Dual Watch allows simultaneous monitoring of any two preselected channels. Full Channel Scan allows you to scan all 40 channels. All the information you need is provided from the full-featured LCD display panel. Choose normal CB channel readout or five-digit frequency display. Your welcome scons, I wish ya the best of luck in finding a cure for the problem your having with your cb. I'd think there may be someone here that may have an answer that'll help fix or correct the problem. I myself am still using the older cb's but I only use them while on the road. I use to drive truck cross country and cb still runs through my vain's... LOL I really think you'll like the Cobra. I sure do, and being here in oklahoma the weather band (s) are great to have. I have, and keep a small portable weather band radio on my aspencade just in case the weather starts getting bad I'll have an idea of whats brewing in the sky. Don't want to get sucked up by a tornado and end up over in OZ..

Problem is also with the intercom Roger, not just the cb. I'm currently tinkering with a preamp for the mike, but it just succeeds in putting the radio audio through the system, including the cb. I don't think Australian Communications and Media Authority would be too keen on that. I've walked away from it for a couple of days to allow us both to cool down. I dont think Cobra is available here, but I have seen similar units. We have to be aware of the frequency differences etc when getting radio gear from overseas. AS for weather bands, I havent looked into that at all, but suspect I would have to access the marine or aviation frequncies for that. Something else for me to dabble with when I get the rest going ok.
