nteresting point.

I had been pondering similar things, not the 10,000 specifically, but why we have so many to start with.

One reason is that it is the best site around for Wings, no contest there.

Another reason, however, is that we have different rules to some fori.

A lot of them insist that you must introduce yourself to validate your membership or you dissappear.

Another rule is that you dissapear if you don't post every so often.

I wonder how many members we would have if we had rules like that.

I realize there is another side to this, as a member you can view all the pics and links, but you might not want to join in discussions. There probably is a place for non-posting members.

As is true with many of us, I am associated with several forums.  This is, by far, the most informative, congenial group that I have the pleasure of communicating with.  It is a pleasure to see the genuine interest and helpful attitudes of all the members!  I am looking forward to meeting many of you this fall in Calhoun, Ga.

It doesn't take long for anyone visiting this site to realize that not only is it a great forum, but the people on it are the greatest too!

Where else can you find people willing to help others out so freely.

We just need to find some really good riding area to take control of and make our own country!!

Down to 386 now. I guess when its a world wide site we get new folks all the time. At this rate according to my calculator it will take another 55.14 days to hit the 10,000 mark.

Unfortunately most of those members no longer exist. Most of them registered and never posted or posted once or twice and were never seen again, ala Dave in the Ditch. The site doesn't have any way to purge members who never participate so there really isn't a good count of real members who participate in the forii.

Just to bring it into perspective, we appear to have 39 members with a post count over 1000 and 355 with a count of over 100, but under 1000. :)

Hey, I am working on it. I just dont have alot to say. I am from the old school of keeping your mouth shut and your eyes and ears open.

But I do check the forums first thing in the morning and a couple of times during the day when I have time. I still have to work for a living and don't have much free time. But One Day....

But you never know. Some day many of those members may return and become more active again. Things happen in people's lives and they leave for a while etc. It still looks like an impressive #.

I know I joined a couple of other forums last year and then just let them go.  I just don't have the time to devote to a lot of different forums and this one is my favorite for sure.  Trouble is, participating in a forum regularily can kind of take over your time.  Like right now I should be doing my exercise program and here I am typing......... Enough said.  I better get....:weightlifter:........be back later.:waving:

Its too bad we don't have a way to get rid of the names that haven't posted in lets say two years. I bet that would weed things out some. They could sign back up later on when they had something to say.

I don't have a lot of post (536) but I'm here every day and sometimes three times a day. If the count was how many times I go to this board I'd have a very high number!

I was a member of another board kind of like this for Suzukis, and the mods were so strict, about bumping stuff, or posting on old topics, or asking dumb questions, i think they scared alot of people away, doesnt happen here, probably has alot to do with it

I have a small BBS that I set up and maintain for a reunion group (for one of my previous Navy ships.)

Because it is specifically for a small group, we get a new member once every couple of months as people slowly stumble across it.

On the other hand, I get about a dozen new spamming members every day.  About once a month I sit down and delete about 300 or so "new members".    Right this minute there are 64 legit members and 308 that are bull.

Mostly they are pushing online poker or porn.

I used to allow new members to authenticate themselves and start posting, but I don't moderate every day.  We don't have very much traffic.  The last posted message was back in January.

I was getting complaints about some of the posters pushing their sex sites.   So now I do the approval of new members manually, and I require the new members to send me a personal e-mail before I do so.   This way, I can tell which ones to delete.

On the small scale I am working on, this works.  I can't imagine what it is like on the large scale that this board operates on.....

I know I joined a couple of other forums last year and then just let them go.
And on those forums, they're thinking you're an active member, just like we're thinking the other 9,000+ inactive members here are. Without some way of weeding out the "members" that don't visit or post, then the number 10,000 really doesn't mean much.
One forum I used to frequent had the ability to count how many times you logged in, and how many posts you average per log in. I would think doing that would enable us to determine who doesn't log in at all, and who logs in but doesn't post. You shouldn't have to post to be a member, but you should stop by from time to time.

That's the way it goes on some forums though, Sandy Eggo..... You can't find out much until you become a member or join and then you see that it's not really for you so you don't go back.  I doubt those other forums would think I'm an active member since I only posted once on them and I still got no replies to my questions even being new and introducing myself too.  :baffled:

I understand what you're saying, Jennifer, but my point is that this forum doesn't exclude people from their member count if they merely joined and never came back. So, the 10,000 member plateau doesn't really mean as much as it could.
