Exactly.

When I signed up I wanted to use the name Wolfman.  But there is already a Wolfman signed up.    He signed up in 2004, but he has zero posts, not even the initial post required to become an active member (maybe that is a new requirement).  And the profile was never filled out.

Anyway that is an example... how many members are there here that have never participated, or stopped participating a long time ago?  Unfortunately there really isn't a way to know.

Interesting because I was a member of a Honda forum that was exactly the same. They actually banned what they called "fluff talk".

Imagine this forum without the "fluff"?.

In my opinion it's the "fluff" that makes this forum what it is...........

FABULOUS:toast:

No fluff?  that would be awful.  Some of the fluff is what makes it fun...

A couple years back the GWRRA board took away the post counts.  There were several people very disappointed about that.  There were people competing against each other. :D There was so much garbage being posted and general nonsense just to get the numbers up that some of the threads degenerated into rubbish.   But it was good clean fun and it didn't hurt anyone.   (I wasn't very good at it, so I wasn't a major contributor, in case you were wondering.)

But I don't think I would enjoy a BBS with out the fluff.

Theres got to be a way to "weed out" some of the names but I bet there would be a lot of time and effort involved. I don't see a problem with putting a limit on how long you go without posting. We've got a test area that anyone can put in a word or two just to keep up there membership alive.

When I first started going to this site and I seen how many members there were I thought "Wow I'll always be a nobody here because theres so many people", but after a few months I noticed the same names over and over and I figured then that maybe someone might remember me so I'll keep coming back and I have! I love this site and its the one I go to every day guaranteed! Good folks, good info and when I ask a stupid question I normally get an answer even if its not the one I want.:P

I've been to other forums and asked a question and after 1 1/2 weeks still got not no answer so I don't go there any more! Thats more than enough time for someone to read what I wrote and at least say I don't know but someone will be along soon.

I only go to this forum and the 1200 forum that Vic runs and to hell with the rest of them!

Some people confuse post count with constructive contributions on the forum. When someone's post consists entirely of a ":)", it all goes into their post count, and others will see that they've got a huge number of posts, so they must know what they're talking about. Personally, I'm against post counts, but I'm also against having a thread degenerate to the point of nothing but people having fun without addressing the initial question.
I've posted a question on this forum before, and had it turn into a chat thread, unrelated to my initial question, so I never got the answer I needed. Fortunately, this isn't the only forum to get information from.

I personally couldn't give a monkey's about post counts, for me it is all about the information available and the characters who give both the info and the laughs.:waving:

I have to agree about the post counts. I really do agree that it tends to become a contest in that regard.

I do like the fact that this forum shows when a member joined though and that it also tells where they're from and what they ride.

To me..............forums like the GWRRA message board (and others) lose potential posters when they don't have the email advice that tells you when there's been a reply to your post.

As far as the FLUFF..........it's true that some threads get so far off topic that they'd need a GPS to get back on course but I think that's a minor setback compared to the family/friendly feeling that this boards format provides.

Just my opinion of course. :baffled::baffled:

It's been like that here for a long time. If you click the registration link, you will see that there is a warning to new members that they need to post within 24 hours or be deleted, I reckon it's an anti-spammer thing. That's why we are having more than the usual amount of newbies saying hello lately, and most of them post more than once after the intro.

Last night we had 9,632 members when I read this thread and then it dropped by 4 and now its up to 9,636. If you look closely you will see new additions every day then a few of them lost, presumably casualties of not posting. Over time this will probably mean a higher % of members posting instead of lurking as the newbies chime in and respond to the usual nice welcome.

I sure would like to see the older non-posters deleted, some of those user names could be taken up by new memebrs that will post. It could be done in a fair way by the admins if they send a PM to all the non-posters asking them to do an intro post or face the axe.

I've sent the wingnut a PM about this for you Jim, so you might yet become Wolfman. ;)

You are right about the initial post being a requirement now, I think that came in withiin the last year or less.
