My 1500 feels like it has more power than my 1200 did, but not quicker. I don't mean top speed, but rather from a standing start. I wasn't able to shake off a good sounding mustang today. Watching the road ahead, rather than watching the tach didn't help. I hit the rev limiter 2 or 3 times.

So, this got me wondering, if you lined up the different Wing models for a 1/4 mile race, who would the winner be?

John

Funny you should mention a Mustang.  I have one place on my way home where I like to throttle away from a stop sign & the 0-70 mph feels like 2 secs.  A few days ago I saw a Mustang trying to keep up with me & was doing amazingly well.

The Pony was a copper color & when I turned, I could hear the built-up motor fly by.

It started me wondering what my 1/4 mile time 'could' be & the rear end ratios of the various Wing models.

Checkout this 1800 Wing vid at 13.13 sec & 99.8 mph: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WISeRGN9ogE&feature=related

According to the figures we've had posted here just about all 'Wings can do sub 13 second 1/4 mile runs. If you're hitting the rev limits you're shifting too late and not getting the best out of your bike since the torque peak is a fair bit below max rpms. the actual horsepower difference between the 1000 to the 1500 isn't all that great but the 1500 has a lot more torque to work with and develops it at lower rpms. So to take advantage of all six of those cylinders you need to shift before 5000rpm or so because the torque curve has maxed out.

Is that 0-100 Km [0-60 mph] fast or top speed fast?

Not that it matters, my 1500 goes faster than I ever should, anyway, even 2up.  But there are times when that power is quite handy.

I know hitting the rev limiter wasn't good. This was a stop light run, and I had to watch for traffic, not the tach.

I have not rode an 1800, that's why I was asking.

I think this is an important factor in this "speed" equation...Humans.  Individual reaction time and speed-shifting skills (or lack thereof) can, and frequently do, make/break entire reputations in that game!!! :gunhead: :cooldevil:

All of you have been put under some kind of illusion.  Must be something in the air.....everyone knows the 1800 in any color is the fastest, it is fast enough I do not think I really want to find out exactly how fast it will go.....:):)  Kit

If I had a gray bike, I'd only wash it once a year.  Too cool.

Anyone want to trade for a 'shiny black & chrome' 1500 ?

I wouldn't know without trying it but it feels like my 1800 would get there and half way back before my 81 std got through a quarter mile and all the way back over my 83 interstate and I thought both of them ran pretty good before I got the 1800.

Comparing these bikes subjectively is difficult at best. I feel my 1200SEI was the fastest off the line, the 1100 seems to pull stronger than my SEI or 1500 did in the 50-70 mph range and the 1500 seems to get to 100 faster then either of them to me. Part of that is probably the sensation of acceleration plus the sound, the 1500 is pretty quiet going about it's business, my SEI had the loudest pipes (Jardines) and the 1100 seems to wind up faster in the midrange. I've never put any of them to the stopwatch. Quarter mile speeds are going to vary a lot, besides skill of the rider there are a lot things that affect the result, temperature, pavement, barometric pressure, tires, you name it. Looking at the figures above there's less than one half second difference in all those models. It would take a lot of runs with those bikes to get a real comparison of speeds. It is surprising to me that they are all so close together. It's really interesting to see a 1975 was only two tenths of a second behind the 2004. Admittedly the '75 was lighter but it also had the handicap of 800ccs less displacement and two less cylinders.
