I agree this is true with the old square tooth belts, they strip teeth rather than break but the half round tooth belts seem to last a lot longer and break rather than strip the teeth. Honda cars have used the round tooth type since the late 80s and they recommend 105000 mile changes in most conditions. I have never seen one of them break at less than 150000. My 83 goldwing had 122000 on it when I bought it, the PO had owned it 15 years and had never changed the belts. Needless to say I didn't ride it until I changed them.

I cant speak of experience with a Honda belt breaking . I can tell you when I had a Fiat belt break at road speed it was 8 valves instantly demolished .
I dont know how many miles are on your bike . I do know for absolute sure if they are original they must be at least 25 yrs old . What do ya think ? No scare tactics meant just simple logic . Hows the tread/sidwalls of 25 yr old tires look ? i wouldnt ride on them either .

I just changed mine on the 78. Original Hondas by the look of it. Still looked good, no cracks, good teeth. Only one thing wrong with them... 30 years old. Good insurance.

I recently bought my wing with 20k miles & new tires. I tossed the tires & replaced the brake pads....it's what I've always done with a strange bike. It may break down on me, but it won't kill me.
If something worries you, then fix it. Otherwise you just can't enjoy it.
Wise words there. I do the same.. even when people look at me funny for tossing out tires that "look good enough" to them.
Some things just aren't worth taking chances with and IMO timing belts are in the same class. I put new belts on my '78 along with new tires and brake pads about 20k miles ago and we've been getting along nicely ever since!

I guess I should explain my logic......... the PO of my bike just stuck a $460 "servicing" into this baby last fall....... from what I understand. The PO is old and don't remember what all was done. I DO believe he had the bike serviced. And am confident the belts were done. If I KNEW the belts were old, I'd change them in a heartbeat. The shop can't say for sure if the bike was done last year or the year before...... either way it was ridden minimally and they think the belts WERE done. Iv'e put 2150 miles on it since march 12, 08 no boom yet. I've done all new fluids and such.......... I think it's ready to go for this year anyway.
Redbaron. if it goes boom I'll send ya the whole damn thing ............ and like I said, get me a nice 1500 cream puff. Yeah, cream puff...............fatman with a cream puff. RED....fast, shinny......... with new belts.
Thanks alot.

Well ya takes yer chances and buys yer ticket and hopes its a good long ride .
I suppose thats a bit more info then we started with . Though if the shop "Did" the work I would think they could document it .

A shop that doesn't keep records is at least setting themselves up for problems.
I used to run my own shop and surprised a lot of customers when they came in and said I did so and so a month or 2 ago and they had another problem so I would pull out their file and usually it was something done a year or 2 ago and most of the time unrelated to their present problem. Had a lot also come in to check on a car that was for sale and I could always provide all the records of what I had done to it and when.

| You say belts are around $50 for Gates. Do you have a supplier where I can order these from? I have searched and come up empty on Gates T275 which I see listed on theis site as GL1500 belts.

I think they were something like $36 for the pair. If they have them.

Interesting point.. yesterday they were listed on their site (Gates T275).. today they weren't, so I called.. They said that they don't carry them anymore...

I just Bought an 81 wing last week, Its in great shape, 20,500 miles, BUT its an 81 and the belts have never been changed, they are OLD. The bike was driven occasionally, but I am planning on riding over 1200 miles next month. NOT with 27 year old belts I'm not!!! Those things could look new and I will still change them out. Its not hard for me to change them out, I did it on my last Wing a couple of years ago.
Whenever I get a new bike, I change ALL fluids, Lube cables, make sure brakes are in great condition, check spokes, change tires if they look weathered, or if I dont know how old they are and IF it has Timing belts, they get changed, unless I have proof they have recently been done. It gives me peace of mind and I get to know the bike "intimately".

| It's not hard to pull of the timing belt covers and "look" at them. I bought my wing last year and the PO HAD the documentation that he changed the belts. I spent two weeks going over the bike with a fine tooth comb looking at everything and replacing anything that was questionable. I wanted to "see" for myself the condition of the belts after buying the bike for $1500 to make sureit was not going to give me trouble. To me it is "cheap" insurance to make sure my bike stays shiny side up or I don't become a statistic. Remember, it's your life. What's the value you want to put on your life?

Well to the tune of $505.00 USD I had my belts replaced and a state inspection. The way I looks at it was the bike has over 49000 miles and no one knows if the belts had been replaced so better safe then sorry.

The moment you get that whining noise coming from the front of the engine caused by seizing tensioners drive home and park the bike until the tensioners are replaced. Even a little bit of friction can cause havoc with the belts. And while you have everything apart replace the belts.
