This question is addressed to those of you outside the US:
Are your fuel prices climbing at the same rate as the US? Are your parent oil companies the same ones as we have in the US?
I'm wondering how much of the rise in fuel prices is global, and how much of it is corporate greed on the part of the US oil companies. After all, if there's a global shortage of oil, then everyone would be feeling the pinch and see their gasoline prices climbing.
I know the price of gasoline in Europe has always been higher than in the US. What is it up to now?

I saw an article the other day that showed the price of a barrel has not gone up significantly compared to the Euro. The dollar going weak has a lot to do with the prices we pay.
It would be interesting to see the price increase in Europe over the last yaer.

Blimey Ron!!!! I'll be having some of that fuel pleeeease!!! round these parts it is running at about £1.19- £1.27 per litre of diesel and £1.12- £1.15 for unleaded petrol.
I read that our government are "kind enough" to take just under 50% of that tax, so the oil companies are not the only ones fleecing us!!!

Not trying to split hair here but
There is enough (known) oil to burn all of the oxygen off this rock
There are not enough refineries and hurricane damaged messed up the output as a whole a wile back. They are not building refineries and population growth ie demand keeps rising.
If you had a spigot that ran gold would you open it up and run your price down as you flood the market or would you close it to a drip and make them stand in line and pay what you want

Pete, you're giving the bar stewards a little more credit than they deserve......see here:

I know the BBC one is dated, but the principles are much the same. Although the oil companies are making money hand over fist, they really don't make obscene amounts from the forecourt. Well, not as much as the government do at least

That's still a specious argument unless you know how much that 40 billion dollars cost Exxon to get. On average an oil company in the US makes about $0.08 on each dollar of the retail price. So $3.60 per gallon gas like we have here means the oil company makes a profit of $0.28 cents. The combined Federal and Washington State tax on that gallon of gasoline is $0.54 per gallon. You might notice that the taxing authorities that do nothing whatsoever to produce a pint of that fuel get twice as much money from it as the oil company does. So who is making the money?
Look it up for your own State. http://www.washingtongasprices.com/tax_info.aspx
You are wrong about Exxon not spending money on exploration, drilling or other efforts at production. They spend millions in court and lobbying Congress trying to get the right to drill where we know there's oil like ANWR in Alaska, The Gulf of Mexico where Mexico is drilling like mad, and off the California coast. They spend millions fighting rabid environmental groups who try to kill any effort to find new oil. It's a cheap shot to blame the oil companies for the run up, there are a lot of other parasites that are causing the price increases.
Kinda ironic isn't it that Canadians pay so much for gasoline when Canada is our second largest supplier of petroleum. We buy gas made from Canadian oil much more cheaply than the Canadians themselves do. You think that's the fault of oil companies too? Not by a long shot.

Thanks for that BFS, now I am feeling soooooo much happier about te cost of fuel at the pump!!!!....Not!!!
Nice to know, that as the government publicly voice the opinion that they want to drive us off th roads for "ecological" reasons, that they are still making plenty of money at it!!!
To be fair, I doubt it would make any difference voting in a different party, after all who is gonna turn down that sort of income if they got in!!!

| Yup. I can look out my front window and see an oil well pumping away 24 hours a day. The oil is literaly underneath my house. Yet we pay more here than in the USA. Huh? Canada, and the province of Alberta specifically, is the second largest supplier of oil and natural gas to the USA. More than Saudi Arabia!!! The biggest oil rush in Canadian history started 5 miles south of here (Leduc #1) and everytime I drive by the commemorative oil derrick, tears run down my face.

Yup--time for Canadians to force the gov't and powers that be to start giving Canadians a bit of a break on fuel prices. Course that will come at the expense of major importers(USA). No reason that basic fuel prices are not the same. Taxes on fuel is another whole issue.
You are getting it bad, USA, but you are still way better off than most.

Oh, and don't forget, they're also paying people like me to clean up their environmental messes. (More than half my income comes from the oil and gas industry.)
