The topic of fuel prices came up, and I asked him how he was dealing with diesel fuel at $4.75/gal. He said he doesn't pay that, instead he goes across the border into Mexico and fills up his truck for $2.10/gal.
I know we pay a lot in tax here in California, but if part of the increase in fuel prices is the weakness of the dollar, why would fuel cost less than half in Mexico? Could it be that their oil companies aren't recording record profits?
It certainly isn't worthwhile to cross the border to fill the tank on the bike, but when the time comes to fill up my diesel pickup, knowing I can save well over $100 by crossing the border, it  makes sense.
Mexico fuel prices are controlled by the Mexican government. All oil is owned, processed and sold by PMEX which is a wholly own government agency. Mexico loses money on each gallon sold but has to subsidise the fuel cost or no one in Mexico could move a vehicle. Mexico has a very socialist government, some things like fuel are cheap but the economy is a basket case even though the country is rich in oil and could be rich in agriculture. There are worse things than high fuel costs, I wouldn't trade their system for ours and apparently at least 25% of their population, mostly who live here illegally agree.
