Hi it's me again...the 1983 Aspencade that I described in an earlier post has a good chance of making it to my driveway and it's new home. It is the one that is an odd color (two tone, rootbeer and tan) The 83 Aspencade according to the paint codes on the forum shows an 83 in sorrel brown. Anyway what is it about this bike that I love so much?? It runs and looks better than the 87 aspencade and it looks like I am going to pay the $3500 for it. I haven't however driven it as of yet but will before I pay the cash. Ok now I could use some feedback on whether or not this sounds good to you folks who are alot more experinced with goldwings than I. I have heard from quite of few to stay away from 84-87 due to stator problems so this leaves me buying older due to lack of the funds. I am in Eastern Washington.
Thank you guy for all the help

The 83 Aspy doesn't sound too bad, that's a premium price but if the bike is in near mint condition not all that bad. If you can expect to ride it for a year or so without any serious maintenance and everything works well not a bad deal. The stators on 1200s do tend to fail earlier than the 1000 and 1100s but it's not a real big deal to replace one. The stator itself costs less than $150 and the job can be done in a long working day, a pro might go faster if he's done it before. The 1200 is a bit quieter on the highway because it's higher geared but they both are good bikes and either one should fill the bill for you. How much a person pays really comes down to what you like and want and how much you want it. What I'll pay for a given bike I like might seem like too much to someone else but that doesn't mean anything other than I value something different than someone else. After all it's only money, six months later it won't make any difference if I spend a couple hundred more or less. The main thing is you get something you enjoy.
BTW please put your location in your personal profile.

Hi! I can tell you, that I'm not loaded with extra money, so I know how you feel laying out your hard earned stash for a bike. Do it, my friend, and don't look back!Your first will lead to a second, and so on. You'll love it. Yeah, they can be finicky(rarely), and some stuff is doable, albeit scarey to do yourself, but you'll still love it! I challenge you to find a group of more kind and helpful people right here.Smart alick answers(just kidding) are icing on the cake, and usually dead on correct! Welcome and good luck on the wing.

If you've done your homework, go for it. I've paid both too much and gotten good deals on bikes and boats. I paid too much for an old boat I have, but I connected with it and it's been great for me and the family, I could have save a few dollars by waiting around, but I think I would have always wondered about this one. But it was a boat that I was able to begin enjoying immediately.
On the other hand, when I bought my GL1100I I was patient, in part because I was looking in the off season, and found a terrific buy on a bike that does everything I was hoping for.
I think if this is your destination bike, the one your going to ride for a long time, and if it is indeed in good riding shape that you will be very happy.

I agree with the others.
If it's the bike you want, you'll be happier with it than another if you were to pass this one up.
Post some pictures when you get a chance, and congrats if you go for it!

I would just chime in and say that if a Wing has a good few extras ( and you like extras) then that has to be worth something, since someone else will have paid top dollar/£/ Euro for those bits. Plus, if you are buying an older Wing these days, those nice shiney add ons would be harder to find, should you wish to add them as time goes on. If it comes fully loaded and you happened to want it more naked, then those shiney bits might recoup some of your money by selling them on.

I agree with the rest of the forum as well. Something to someone has a different value than to others. So only you can make that decision as to whether or not that price is worth what is being asked. Good Luck Ryster. Old Hawkeye.

I have been following your threads.. and it looks like you have done your homework.. YOu now have several comparisons.. [And '83 is my favorite year for GL1100, although I prefer the analog panel over the LCD.]
Keep us informed..

It really comes down to YOUR own feelings for this Wing. I too wandered over the internet and around the countryside, for about 6 months. I debated about going over the border and paying the export fee and taxes and at times I got quite agitated about shelling out so much bread on an unknown machine.
This site is a great resource, especially for experience, repair, and support and general tomfoolery, but in the end it comes down to your own decision to buy or not. I know when I saw mine I knew THAT was it, but by then I was at the end of my tether. As others have said the extras, all those sparkely bits are a bonus but in my mind it should have a decent set of tires and brakes and no oil leaks
Good luck with your shopping and I know you will feel great when you have it finally in your driveway.
