i thought i seen a step by step outline on changing the fork seal with out removing everying from the bike, but i can not find it now, does some body have it saved, it was the one with out removing the forks from the bike,

last year i done my timing belts using the post here that took me step by step with pictures and that made changing the timing belts so easy,

i would really like to find the one about the fork seals to make that job as easy as possible for me, i am not planning on doing it until fall.

Hey chuck!

I just did my 81i seals and wound up taking them off the bike. I remember seeing that , but just can`t remember how they kept the lowers from  getting forced down from spring pressure after you take out the bolt that holds it together & how they put fluid into the legs if they didn`t take them off. What i did for ease , was to take off the fairing with lowers , disconect the tach-speedo cables & removed the guage setup out of the way (so you can get to the transfer hose easy. Took fender & tire off & unbolted the calipers & hung them onto the engine guards. Then one leg out at a time & installed seals. For the 1100 seals i have the perfeck piece of roll bar tubing the i put on top of the seal & tapped it in with a hammer , then installed the forks back in , put it all back together & have been riding it with no problem since. Let me know if you need the pipe & i`m sure 2 hands will come with it  ;-)

Gerard

Exavid did a thread like that showing how he made a tool to help control the fork springs. Hey Paul, show the guy how you did it. :grinner:

I wonder if Exavid wouldn't mind measuring the tool he made and post the specs for it. It' looks pretty good, might get my brother to make one up from his collection of scrap metal he saves from his welding jobs he does at home.

You really don't need the jig to replace the seals, only if you need to remove the fork caps to inspect or change the springs. Normally to replace the seals it's just a matter of pulling the sliders off after removing the allen bolt and snap ring. Once they are out you just slide the lower up and yank it down until it pulls the seal loose in the GL1000 or pulls the seal and bushing free on the GL1100. You really don't need to remove the forks from the bike either, just put the bike on the centerstand and slip a jack under the engine so you can lift the front wheel off the ground. That will give enough clearance to slip the lowers off. Be sure to put a board under the lowers and replace the caps and bolts to protect the threaded studs when you're pulling the lower off.

Here's a pictorial that might help.
