and how many miles.
Mine was built in Feb, 1988,it was Phantom Grey, I bought in in Jan 2002, with 64,000 miles, for $3500

The horses did not last beyond the first day, some Easy off and cotton balls and they were history

I rode it on the Arizona Precision Motorcycle Drill Team, and was riding it when we won the 2003 Championship in Springfield, Mo. It turned 100,000 miles in Tulsa, Ok on the way there, This photo is nice because is shows me on my 1988 GL1500, and a 2000 GL1500, the first and last of the GL1500s

Aug 2005, at 133,000 miles, it was almost totaled in a accident, $5,500 in damages. I paid $3500 for it, rode it for 3 years, and then got a $5500 check, so I made money on the bike.
I bought a 2001 GL1800, and worked on the 88 when I had the time
I replaced the forks and tripple trees, and all the plastic from the driving light forward with used parts, the fairing was red metalic, the chin was gold, the front fender was red, and so on. I also replaced the headlight assembly with one from a 2000 GL1500.
I hated the Phantom Grey, and decieded I would paint it in the colors of my 1986 GL1200 Aspencade, which I sold to pay for the GL1500. I went to Bob's motorcycle salvage armed with tracing paper and pencils. I made tracings of the color insets on the GL1500 SE models. then used the tracings to make painting masks.

After setting for 2 years, I reassmebled it after painting, and put a new battery in it, put a gallon of gas in it and hit the starter. It fired up and idled just like it did the day of the accident. I took it around the block,

I took it down for emissions, and tags, and was even able to get my old tag from the GL1200, BLBYU.
2 Weeks after rebuild, I took it on a 500 mile trip, I replaced the fuel filter on the out bound leg, other than that, it has been running as well as it did before the accident. Since it has been back on the road, I have replaced the platform hitch with a reciever hitch, and I did the AUX input mod to the radio.

| Wow Matt! You sure did an awesome job on that 1500. Beautiful paint work shows how you care about your stuff.

Out standing job....You and I have a couple things in common... I'm not going to ride my 82 until it pleases me as to the safety items first then the paint work has to be just right.....But I'm not going to get into the art work you have..It is pretty but out of my reach.....

Beautiful! Good job
Now, figure labor at $70/hr and cost of custom paint job [done by a pro] + original value = new worth of bike.
ouch.

all labor was done by me, as was all the body work, paint was $2000, and the murals were done in 2003 for $500. maybe $800 in parts, so for $2800, I repaired my GL1500, and still had $2700 left over
In the photos there are 2 saddlebag lids shown, I have 2 sets of lids, one set with murals and the other set with the SE graphics.

I have an '88 with 89,000 miles. still runs perfect. I've researched a newer bike but don't like the reduced luggage capacity on the GL1800 and nothing else really compares to a GL. would like a lighter bike with a lower seat and more power than the 1500.
I am looking into the Yamaha V-4 tourer. Might be a replacement if you can get past the 1950's style speedo.
