Way back in '97, my wife and I rode the Gap on our old '81 Interstate as part of a trip to the Blue Ridge Parkway....   I remember that the place was deserted the day we were there, probably because of a driving rain that bounced up off my tank and up my nose, almost drowning me!  Never have been so wet, and we are from the Pacific Northwest!  We rode over it, turned around and rode back, got the T-shirt...... worth every rain drop, worth every mile to get there...... sometimes, you just gotta do what's expected of ya!

Went there a couple of weeks ago, first time. Awesome! Planning another trip next year. Took pictures of the tree of shame, pictures don't do it justice.

I was there last Sunday and again a couple weeks before that.  Great ride, great scenery and lots of bikes.  (and State Police)

June of 2007 was the last time I visited.

That is a beautiful area to visit on a bike.  The Charohala Skyway and the Blue Ridge Parkway are two of my favorite roads.

On my run to the parkway yesterday I ran into a good looking female Parks Ranger at the top of the Pisgah entrance turnout. She rides bikes too and still advises to ride the Dragon on the weekdays instead of the weekends when it's loaded with zoomsplatz and tourists.

She informed me that Tennessee has allocated another 150 million for the fiscal year for speed enforcement on thier side of the Dragon. So don't look for Tennessee to let up anytime soon on thier end of Deals Gap.

I was on my zoomsplat as you folks put it when i was there. We ran the dragon in the rain(pouring down rain) we ran the dragon at 2AM and in the sun(much better) I saw cops here and there. Talked to one for about 30 minutes, from what i picked up, they mess with idiots that use the place as a race track. If it wasnt for that place i wouldnt have my wing, when i got there and saw all the goldwings there and started looking i knew i wanted one. I didnt realize then i was gonna go home and sell my ninja and drive a 1000 miles to get my wing but i have enjoyed every minute of owning it. One suggestion if you hit the gap, stop and say hi to a guy that works there, his name is ben and he is one cool dude. mhe has hair down to his azz so he is easy to spot, he will answer any question you might have and he is a walking weather man of sorts:)

We took a trip to the Smokies a year ago in May, stayed at Deals Gap Resort in the camping area. We were there Sunday through Thursday. Very light traffic, good for running the Gap. Were told the weekends get nuts, the weekdays are the best time to ride.

We alos rode the Blue Ridge Parkway, Cherohala Skyway, Foothills parkway, and the road that goes south-east from the campground at the Crossroads Of Time. I think they call it "Hellbender 28". It goes along the Tennessee river for most of the trip. It was Gloria's favorite road.

The wife and I were there last year in June. Rode it early in the morning during the week and saw very few cars or bikes.

Loved every curve of it.

Even got to see a black bear cross the road and at another spot a turkey.

I try to make it up there a couple of times a year for long weekends.  I stay at the Kickstand Lodge.  http://kickstandlodge.com/

Once you stay at KSL you won't want to stay anywhere else.

The first time I rode the dragon and other roads up there I wasted a ton of money on a motel in cherokee.

There are so many things to see and do in that area and I haven't found a road that isn't fun to ride yet.

The dragon was where I took the 1500 for a test ride after I swapped the timing belts

The next time you go there take the time to go to Maggiesvile, NC & visit the Wheels of Time museum. If you have any gearhead genes active in you you won't want to leave. Granted it is primarily H-D & American made stuff but Dale the owner is a great guy & loves to show off his "babies".

Yeah the kicxkstand lodge is very nice. We stayed in the deals gap motel/apartments. Place was nice, but not the greatest but alot of biker folks to talk to. We was there on the weekend, rained some but was still a killer trip. Basically you get to deals gap you can go a 100 miles any direction and have beautiful road to ride. We spent a few days just toolin around the roads, was great.

Dale is selling off part of the collection and moving the rest to Alabama at the end of September so if you want to see the whole collection still intact then do it on the way to Calhoun or right after.

I have an old friend who rides a Crotchrocket. He has always love taking the curves fast and riding wheelies.

After my vacation I went to see him. We talked about Nancy and I going to the Dragon.

He said, "I try to go to the Dragon every year. I just load my bike up in the truck and head north."

I thought to myself, all the miles and sights between he misses.:baffled:

I've had my wing now close to two years and still haven't gotten him to go riding with me, or me with him. Heck, I'ld even let him lead.
