I agree with Kit. Although I love the night air it's hard to tell what things are. Is that black spot up ahead a tar patch, pothole, puddle or slippery piece of plastic?
I miss the scenery as well.
Since I just ride for fun I take the cage when I go out at night.

I am with OZZYN. Depending on your riding location, riding where there are a lot of deer is pretty much a no-no for me especially at night. On our recent trip we had 40 miles of very dark highway to make my aunt's house in western kansas.
Lots of deer out there especially after dark. Thankfully we
saw none. Finally pulled into my aunt's driveway at 10:20p or so. I will ride around our town after dark, but then its a very busy city. Since FT Worth and outlying areas are very congested at times it still not something I have ever liked doing, riding at night.

I don't ride at night I just don't see as well as I think I need to (used to LOL), after I've had a beer, or without my gear. A horrible story in the local paper (Amery, in NW Wisconsin) of a woman and her husband riding at 2:30 in the afternoon when a deer popped out, she was leading, hit the deer and went down had to be airlifted. Her husband hit her bike and went down but was O.K. 2/12 weeks later, while she was still in hospital, he hit a deer at 2:30 in the a.m. and was killed. A helmet could have saved his life.
It's all about risk management.

I've hit my share of deer in my trucks/cars and I still drive, even at night. My whole point is, if I need to worry about hitting a deer, I guess I should quit driving bikes, cars, anything. I see them almost everyday.
I have a friend who bought a new 2003 1800. He doesn't drive it when, in his opinion, it is too hot, too sunny, too windy, too cold, too dark, too wet, you name it. Avoids roads he thinks, may have too many deer. Yet, he'll spend hours on end cleaning it. He sure loves that thing. He just passed 3000 miles on it.
Yeah, you can hit a deer at night, or a patch of water at night, or a drunk can run you over........or you could go to bed at night and never wake up.
To each, his own.

I love riding at night, but.... I have to admit, I'm scared when I do it. Which is very rare......
But there is a freshness to it, a stange quality to the air and night scenery... I've written on here about an almost religious experience I had once riding nights in Texas.... too hot during the day for these Northwesterners, and so Red and I would leave at midnight and hammer on until the sun came up. Loved it. I was too dumb to be scared then, but not now.... I truly think I don't mind dying (at my age), but a long hospital recovery or total disability is a true terror, and, of course, having the Red on the back is another issue..... Buit, damn, riding at night is cool.

Not very complimentary, was he?
Hey Rude...... if it came together, would you still be willing to drop by WOW and check out a bike for me? Something I could pick up after flying to JaJaw?

Have to agree.....the trip that Bashful, Deputy Dawg and I made to Rudy's a few weeks ago was a 3am start time. Boy, it was nice and cool, low traffic, saw a few shooting stars.....very nice ride! Until we got into Georgia, and the fog was so thick you barley could see the dang guages on the bike!!!

Not a problem at all, sir.
Just let me know the details and logistics and I'll work with it.

I love riding at night. It is so peaceful. It's like being in a different world.
Unfortunately my wife doesn't like to ride very often to start with. So when I want to go for a night ride, she doesn't seem to understand why I would want to do something like that. So I don't get to do it very often.

I'm in illinois, it's deer everywhere depending on the night. I just dig riding late when people are in for the night. We ride mostly country roads and it's like we are the only folks on the road. Far as potholes i pretty much no where all the bad spotts are on most the roads and i'm not kiddin! Critters are always a issue but 20-40mph on country road i always have time to slow down. Going riding here in a few for awhile, 78 degrees out

I ride at night a lot. This is after creaming a deer at 55mph 2 years ago in the daylight on a four lane, so I know what it feels like. The deer are amazingly thick here too. I like to ride country roads about 25 mph, maybe 35 mph in spots, and just pull over and let the occasional vehicle by. I realize I don't eliminate all risk, but the most of it. I will not give up night riding for anything. The night smells and the solitude in the Pennsylvania countryside are priceless.
I have driving lights in combination with the high beam.Last edited on Fri Aug 8th, 2008 05:49 pm by handyrandy

And...AND what about all you guys with the extra lighting, saddlebags, trunk, side marker, rotor cover, ground effect........and all you guys that paid extra to get the extra charging capacity to add them? What good are all those lights in the mid-day sun? I would much rather see them reflecting on the road, while driving on a moonlit night, shooting stars and all.
Nothing like a well lit bike, late at night.........cool smell of the air, engine purring......damn.

Your friend has it in his mind that he will ride when he wants to ride. I certainly am not going to fault him for that. I am of the same mind. I ride when I want to ride. Not because I have to ride.
While in the Navy, my CB750-4 was my primary mode of transportation around Charleston. I rode at all hours. In freezing cold and rain, carrying my groceries under my jacket.
However, now that I am older, I want comfort and I have the choice of when to and not to ride just like your friend. And if anyone wants to judge me otherwise can be damned.
My 2 pennies worth.....
