Thanks to reading the previous posts of member MDKramer on the easy way to fix a rusted fuel tank, I am now the happy, previsouly depressed, owner of an 81 gl 1100 with what appears to be, on the inside, a new fuel tank! To top off the story, the 5 gal bucket of "cleaner", usually $245.00, is currently reduced to $175.00 with a shipping cost of $47.50 to anywhere in the U.S 48.
Since the "boss" was really not interested in me bringing the wing into the kitchen, I took it to my brother's garage. We were also replacing front shock seals and clutch cable. The tank on the 81 is 5.5 gals, after pouring in the 5 gals of cleaner,, we filled a 1 gallon zip lock bag with water through the filler neck to displace enough of the cleaner to completely fill the tank, rolled the baggie
down around the filler neck and put the cap on to hold it in place. The insturctions suggest you leave it in the tank for 72 hrs. It does work!
Thanks again to my friend to the north!

Here is a post that I made to praise the help you get here:

I have reposted (is that a word?) this thread to thank everyone here for the help they give every day. I've had a couple of problems with this old bike that I thought would be completely over my head; this seal problem, a bad starter and more. Turns out that the advise I got here more than simplified the repairs.
Thought that I had to remove the engine to change the starter. No way! I got a step by step on this forum and did the job in an hour. Cleaned up some hard to get to areas during the process. The advise contained here is amazing.
There is such an amount of know-how, the willingness to share it, and friendliness here that is hard to find on the Internet, or in life. Not to mention the lack of pissy attitudes and flame throwing.
There are some misleading ideas like red or yellow being the fastest color when it is well known that black has always been, and the best color for a motorcycle. And too much fun is made of life-saving deer alerts; not to mention emoticom-itis that is rampant.
Makes me doubly glad I found this old Gold Wing. I get to work on it and ride it, and I found Steve Saunders Goldwing Forum. Thanks to everyone for the ride.

Aw shucks!
Decided long time ago deer alerts do work! It's the d--n deer that don't cooperate. They get alerted, stand confused, see motorcycle, figure thats the way to escape and go for it. + = Keno

I always check here before 'getting-into-something' on my bike.
The shop manual will usually tell me to dismantle many parts, unnecessarily.
Many all-day jobs can be done in an hour if you ask someone who's done it before.

No, Broke Winger finally filled me in on why deer alerts seem to not work......
You see, some unskilled Wingers install the things backwards, and when that happens the deer alerts actually attract deer!

There was no removing the tank! That was the best part. Simply took the seat off just so I could get a better look inside the tank through the fuel sending unit hole. The inside of the tank looked like it had barnicals on the walls and the bottom. We didn't even remove the petcock. I did put a piece of clear plastic hose on the bottom end of the petcock and made it long enough to raise the end above the uppermost level of the tank so I could leave the petcock open and not loose any of the cleaner. Cleaned out any rust that might have been in the petcock. Drained the cleaner back out of the tank through the petcock and into it's original bucket. It is reusable. It is a little thick so I think it took a couple hours to drain the tank completely. Not near as much work as removing the tank. Man, I did NOT want to do that! Flush the tank with water from your garden hose, dry it with a blowdryer or heat gun, back on the road!
