I pulled up to our only real store here in Myakka City and saw three bikes out front waiting for the shower to end. One was a nice looking 1800, the others a Harley and one of those Harley wannabe's.

Inside I found them sitting talking riding, so I sat down near them while Nancy got us some greasy fried chicken for lunch.

Soon I found myself smiling, listening to the conversation. It had taken a turn to riding any distance.

For some reason they had started talking about going to Georgia and couldn't decide if they could make it in one day???

Just guessing, we can't be more that 250 miles from the line.

One saw me smiling and asked me, "what's a good day's ride?"

So I had to ask back "are you meaning just out riding, or going some where?"

"Both" he replied.

I told him "that if Nancy and I were just out for a nice ride, 200 or 300 would be a good easy all day ride. But if I had to go some where, who knows."

Of course the next question "what do you ride and how far have you been."

When I told them I had taken my 1200 and left here at 3:30am and that evening I had dinner with the daughter in Portsmouth Va at 5:30, the conversation came to an end.

They said no way in h**l would they spend 15 hours on the bike in one day.

Dang, I love riding my bike. :baffled:

They left ahead of another shower, heading to Port Charlotte, 60 miles away.

Chicken shirt whimps anyway.  And worried about a little rain shower besides.

My wife, our small daughter and I left home one morning at about 6:30 am in late September just to ride up to Livingston Texas and let our daughter see the Indians put on a show....Ok then from there we were going to ride over to this restaurant about 30 miles or so away near Woodville Texas.... for a home style dinner, they asked what kind of meat you wanted, then brought out bowls of all kinds of veggies.....After dinner we got back on the bike and decided we would just go east for a few miles...A few hours later we stopped at a small Mom and Pop grocery store, cradle to grave type...Honest they sold everything from pampers to caskets.....We filled up and I asked the owners when I went to sign my credit card slip..."Where in Louisiana are we???" I didn't even see no state line markers...."Oh you about 40 miles into Louisiana son...."

Next question what was the quickest way back to Texas other that going back into a thunder storm we seen behind us...."oh you go to here at this tall pine tree at the next road, turn right and then that roads gonna snake around and you'll have one more right turn when you reach the only stop sign on that road..." Yeah sure.... Its about 3 in the afternoon then, and after getting low on gas in the middle of nowhere, I see a sign that said De Ridder 30 miles......Long story short.....we took our picture at the state marker at Orange Texas at 9:30 that night.......I think my trip meter said over 400 miles, and to this day I still have no idea where we were nor how to get back there.....

Our daughter laid down on her pillow strapped to the tank and went to sleep....That's real trust....When the club handed out trophies for long distance male and female driver and rider, we won it...also...most out of state miles.....

Claude....

Along about '83 or '84, I rode straight thru from Mt Clemens MI to San Antoine TX. Stayed a week, then left Thursday afternoon (3:30 ish). Pulled into Mt Clemens Saturday at 1:00 PM. The year before, left Mt Clemens on Friday, pulled into Miami FL Saturday night. The Kaw 900 fried one coil on the way down. 40 mph and 18 mpg. Got it fixed Saturday eve. Missed the folks I went to see, so I turned around and headed towards home. Met up with some folks from Syracuse NY, and went with them. 10 states from Friday to Monday, I think. I was about 39 years old at the time. Taught me I never wanted another air cooled chain drive bike. Bought a '76 Gold Wing and hain't looked back since. (grin)

Left Spartanburg, SC over 15 years ago on a Friday afternoon on a 76 750 Hondamatic loaded to the gills. Pulled into my cousin's yard Sunday afternoon in Burleson, Tx. 2500 miles in 60 hrs with 2 short overnignt stays in campgrounds. Will never do it again!!!

5 years later and moved back to SC driving a 26' U-Haul towing a Datsun pickup on a dolly, wife, 3 yr old son and a big red dog in the cab with me.

First day I owned my Valkyrie was an iron butt day. I flew to Virginia Beach got in at around 3:00, previous owners met me at the airport and gave me a ride to there place. I looked over my new ride, handed over the cash, collected the title and hit the road at about 5:00pm by 5:00pm the next day I was back in Oklahoma.

Had a nice easy ride of 1200 miles over 3 days last weekend. Pa. has some really nice back roads... but they all go SW to NE. Hard to find a road that goes East to West. Pretty mountains and campgrounds though.

Last week I did about 640 miles on the Wing in one day. Rode from Meriwether on the Natchez Trace to Jackson MS. Picked up my oldest daughter and we had an adventure of 320 miles back to Hohenwald Tn right outside Meriwether. SHe had a blast as we got caught in the rain about 60 miles outside Jackson and did about 100 of those miles in it. Had to stop at several rest areas and wait it out, snack and just BS.

I feel like a 300-350 is a good number for me. I dont feel so tired with that. The ride down was a piece of cake except that the Natchez Trace is being repaved south of Tupelo. They've cut big, deep grooves in the road. That sucked bigtime. JR

Those guys must've never heard of the Iron Butt Association. My daughter and I have ridden 2 Minnesota 1000's so far 2-up (last year and this year- look up teamstrange.com).  Last year we put on 1224 miles in 24 hours and this year we did around 1117. The Wing is a 2-wheeled Buick (or Cadillac depending on who you talk to).

You strapped your daughter to the tank of a moving motorcycle?

My wife and I drove down to Malaga in spain from cherbourge in france last year on my valk, about 1400 miles each way, took about 3 days each way. My wife has a tendancy to fall asleep when she's a passenger in a car, almost immediatly sometimes, turns out bikes are no different. It's one of the reasons I bought a wing. I don't have to slap her leg so often to make sure she's awake on the wing,on the valk I'd slap just to make sure she was still on the bike.

We've put just over 10,000 miles on our bike since we picked it up last Feb. We just love to unwind after a hard day by going for a ride.

Yeah, it was three bikers talking.

I'm a morning person by habit. My oldest Boston Terrier needs to go out anywhere from 11:30 to 3:30 so it's just natural to me.

If it's close to 4:00am, I just put on the coffee and get on the computer in the office. It's good and bad to work out home.
