Been looking for a 1200 Aspencade, was all set to buy one in Tulsa, OK
(about a 10 hour drive each way from home), went as far as asking another
member neare to it to check it out for me. Got a call late yesterday evening
in response to an ad I placed in local Craigslist, looking for Goldwing.
Guy about 20 miles from me said he has an 86 Aspencade, looks very good,
but needs a stator and clutch, and hasn't been run in a year. I asked how much
he wanted, he told me to just make him an offer - after talking for a while
(he's an old country boy, just turned 72 years old) I again asked how much he
was looking to get for the bike. He said to come over and look at it, and make
him an offer, if he thought it was fair, I'd get it, if not he'd tell me.
Went over today after I got up, talked to him for a few minutes, then we
walked to his shed to see the bike. There under a medium layer of dust was a
1986 Aspencade SE-i !!!! :clapper:
Cosmetic wise, it has some slight pinstripe flaking, and one of the wind wings
is cracked :D Battery is toast, but we hooked up a charger, couldn't get
enough juice to spin it fast enough to start, but it did turn over enough to tell
the engine is not frozen - the 3 wires are cut, where he'd been testing the
stator, and the license plate is current, so I believe it was running when he
parked it. I told him that without hearing it run, the offer I could make him was
going to be pretty low, and he understood that. To get to the point, Wednesday
when I wake up, I am going to the credit union and pull out the money, and go
pick up my 1200.00 dollar SE-i
This was long, but I'm excited!!!
(It's sitting in an old Quonset hangar type building, I guess this qualifies
as a barn find)

I'd put a poor boy kit on it. Getting it back up and running faster that way and never worried about replacing another stator.

Just build you a trailer, buy a generator, and hook up a battery charger...that oughta do it!;)

Congrats on the find.  It ought to be a good project.:clapper:

Same here. I did find some Progressive air shocks and fork springs locally though without even looking for them. Gonna pick them up the first of the month.

One of the guys I ride with had an '83 Wing, not too bad, little rough in the body, ran strong.

Sold it to some kid for $200 because one of the forks was leaking oil

Could easily have shot him!

Great find Tookie!

Makes me jealous, it does, it does...

Forget about fixing the stator. The poor boy kit is far better anyway, and a faster fix.

Well done Tookie, you're going to love it!

As for the color, unless an SEI has had an after market paint job, they are only the color pictured above.  That was the only color they came in.

As for the poor boy, I can understand why people would do that, but I couldn't bring myself to doing that to my bike, and I'm glad I didn't.  I learned a lot doing the stator myself, and the job is really not that bad.  I've done a second one on an '84 Standard I picked up cheap since then, and made good money on it, and now I'm doing an engine swap and installing a new stator for one of our new members.  If I hadn't done my own, neither of the other two would have happened.  You can also do 3 or 4 stator replacements for what one poor boy kit costs, unless you build it yourself.

John

I haven't paid for the bike yet, guy does not have it advertised anywhere, didn't care if I left a deposit or not, said it is mine when I pick it up Wednesday. First thing to do is get a new battery, and do some testing, ensure it really is the stator and not something else - assuming it is bad, he has a new in the box stator that he ordered before he decided to sell, and a new clutch, cause he said it was slipping in high gear. 64,000 is early for a clutch, but it's there and paid for, so..... (I am going to have to check on the stator he has, and ensure it's for an SE-I)

Clutch hydraulics will bear looking at also, lever had no resistance whatsoever.

If it cranks and runs decent, all the rest is relatively minor.

I am going to check into the price of replacing the stator at the dealer, I have heard that there is a lifetime warranty if they do it, anyone know if this is true? I can do it, but it may be worth it if this is the case.

I don't have the bike in my possession yet, so I don't want to get too

carried away

That was true when the dealers did them, but you might have a very difficult time finding a dealer that will work on an 86.  If you do, it will likely cost $1200-$1500, and you will have to buy the stator from them as well.
