I finally went out and bought a sheepskin for my seat on the Goldwing. I checked around a lot first for a good price and I've seen them anywhere from about $60 up to $200 or more. Ikea had a great price $39 for a smaller one and $69 for a larger one. It's really great quality. I dug through the bins until I found a real nice thick one. I bought the smaller one because it fit's the seat with extra to spare on my Shadow Spirit too. Then on the Goldwing seat it just covers the seat with none to spare, but I will rarely take a passenge anyway. Check it out if anyone want's one.

| What made you buy one? I just bought one a month ago, and like the fact that it's not hot, after sitting in the sun and it looks good on the bike. Thought that, with the gel pad inserts, it would improve the ride, but really didn't.

I am looking for another one to cut down to fit just the riders seat portion of the saddle. That way, the thickness of the skin that goes up and over the backrest portion of the bucket, won't push me forward and loose some much needed 'leg room', like my present setup does.
Did you know that the same skins are half price in the US? US Ikea
Think I might wait and get the better one at the Atlanta store, when I'm down at Calhoun
Also, the cheaper skin is probably a fake, as you can't wash it, whereas you can with a 100% real hide.(check the fine print)
The Bay also sells them(natural colour only, bedding dept.), although not as cheap as Ikea, for those that don't have an Ikea near them, like me and Ikea doesn't ship them either.
Either way Jen, you'll find it better than a stock saddle and at a reasonable price too.

I had been thinking of buying one for a while and then when we took our last trip to Canmore, our friends had one and I sat on his bike with the skin on it and it was awesome. Then after that trip we took a day ride when it was 34 celcius and I felt hot and sticky on my Goldwing seat. So the time came that I had a chance to run to the city and get one.
By the way......it is not the fake one. It's the real skin. I didn't want to buy something on Ebay when it came to this. I wanted to be able to see it before buying.
Yeah.....either way, it feels veryyyyyyy comfy

I got a full pelt for $39 at http://www.sickafus.com/sheepskin/MCYCLST.html in their "cheapie sheepie" pile. It was worth the trip.
I think the full pelt is more versatile. You can start the day riding the seat, and later in the day you put it on and it feels like a whole new seat. I like to roll it up for a little more lower back support (I don't have a backrest yet).

I could have bought a bigger one, but I also wanted to be able to fold it up small enough to tuck in the trunk or saddlebag when I leave the bike parked somewhere or it's raining etc. Plus the big ones would be way too big to use on my Honda Shadow as well. I don't want it hanging down on the mufflers.
Also, since my Wing is really tall in the saddle, I don't want 2 inches of sheepskin under me making it harder to reach the ground and affecting my control of the bike.

Yes, this is the one caveat of sheepskins.
If you are short on inseam, you'll be even more so after throwing one on your saddle. I have a 34" inseam, wear heavy boots and wouldn't want to have any less inseam.
When I remove my 'skin', I have quite a bit of 'flex' in the knees, with both feet planted firmly on the ground, but that is not the case with the skin on!

| Thanks for the tip! I am heading down to ikea tonight for a $20 skin. How are you attaching them to the bike?

I don't find that my sheepskin makes enough of a difference to worry about. You and Dusty Boots do realize that you're supposed to take the sheep out of the skin first!!!

We picked up a sheepskin at IKEA a few years ago on our annual trip to Minnisota. Went through every skin in the bin, putting aside the best ones and choose one from those. the large full skins were thick, but we had to check them out carefully - at the price they aren't the top of the line item. Some had holes in the middle, lots weren't shaved even at all, some were odd shape. Was picky and got a good one.
The next year I went back and got another one, this time the smaller version. Same sorting out process, got a good one. I cut it in half and trimmed it down a little, it firts the front part of the seat of both the Wing and the Harley. the other half was made into a backrest cover for the Wing.
I just cut the original skin in half to make seperate pieces for the front and rear seat of the Wing. If either Gloria or I want a change, we can pull just our piece off without making the choice for the other rider.

I cheated and had mine custom fitted, included in the price. There is a elastic strap at the front to fit under the nose of the seat, and a leather tie at each side in the back, that attaches to the seat handles. I have the full size, also.

That is what I was wondering, Regular MC ones have straps from the catalog photos. I was afraid it would keep falling off when getting on or off it. Or leaving it on while going in a store and having the wind blow it off into a puddle or worse.

you can read about how I did mine, here. http://www.goldwingfacts.com/forums/view_topic.php?id=49729&forum_id=4&jump_to=497215#p497215
Just need some good upholstery/nylon thread, a good sized, sturdy needle, patience and the items mentioned in my above thread. Sewing them on as near the rear as practical, to wrap around the passenger handles, minimizes 'lift' while riding. I also doubled over each end of the grosgrain ribbon, where I sewed it to the underside of the skin and where it is looped around each buckle, to give it added strength. The buckles make for fast attaching/detaching.

| Jennifer, I don't suppose you're going to be near an Ikea again in the next few days? I might want to get one of these.

I bought a good one a year or so ago from Alaska Leather.
http://www.alaskaleather.com/
They had two grades and I got the premium grade. I think it cost about $70 bucks for an extra large. I really like it. It's not nearly as thick as the one on the picture posted by Dusty Boots. I don't notice any difference in the seat height or distance to the ground. But it really helps. It keeps the seat from getting hot when you stop and I think it improves blood circulation. (It keeps my nuts from going to sleep. ) It has a nose strap and a strap underneath with clips on both sides, so it comes off easily, but the strap stays on under the seat. The only problem I've ever had is when it gets wet. You want to take it off and hide it if it rains. It soaks up water like a sponge. It gets real heavy and it takes a long time to dry. Don't let them get wet if you can help it.

Well I rode up to the Pittsburgh Ikea last night (an hours drive) and got a nice skin (or what ever they call it, why cant they write things in english for petes sake) for $20. They had really thick bigger ones for $40. I had to dig to the bottom to get a larger thick $20 one. The $20 ones on top of the pile were small and thin.
Whe are also fourtunate enough to have a Harbor Freight store a few miles from Ikea, so I stopped in there to get a few things.
I threw the skin on the driver seat and over my utopia backrest and wrapped a bungee around it and rode home. I am still debating if it is more comfortable as far as support. The moisture wicking ability is wonderfull though, and it was cozy warm riding home after dark. I wish it was black in stead of white. I might get some wool dye today, Duno. It looks like I am sitting on a big white dog.
I will probably cut it down to 2 pieces to just fit the seats. I wanted to try one with out paying double or triple for a custom MC one and find out I didn't like it. I already got too much junk laying around. At least I wont be out much money.

Not yet. I would definitely like another one though. We have some other expenses coming up first and my husband wants to try it too. If he really likes it, then we will need two and I will go back for another one. Otherwise, I almost never go to Edmonton anymore. I'll PM you if I am and you can maybe drop by the shop first. I'll take some pictures of the sheepskin on my Shadow and on my Goldwing seat when I get a chance to show how it looks too.
I really had to search through the bin to find a big one that was thicker too. They all vary quite a bit.
