100% correct! You hit the nail on the head.  I could not had phrased it better. :cooldevil:

Most cage drivers in the US are in their own little world when they get behind the wheel.  There are exceptions, of course, but the biggest majority are idiots.  Just look at all the idiots who drive to work, forget that their 2 year old is in the backseat because they were in their own little cloud, and the poor kid dies due to being left in the car.  That never happened when I started driving.  It is getting worse all the time.:(

One of my worst ones was my fault.

I was in the middle of a group and the group was making a left hand turn.  The riders ahead of me were all clear so they made the turn with out stopping.  I just followed along and didn't even think about it.   I turned right in front of a car that was way too close for comfort.  I was off in la la land, and when I finally woke up to what I had done, I was looking at the head lights of the car that was busy applying his brakes.

Ooops!  :gunhead:

I never did touch either my brakes or my throttle until it was too late anyway, so I rolled on through and he missed me, but it wasn't because I reacted...

If it wasn't for him paying attention, I'd be hurt.   So as much as we know the cagers put us in danger, sometimes it's not them.....:blushing:

You may have a point there! Is it an American culture thing, where everyone has rights, but little regard for responsibilities?

I don't wish to be insensitive here, forgive me if it sounds like it.

We too have been going down this track for some time now, and I think it demeans us as human beings.

I prefer to look out for my buddies, not use them as target practice.

Steve

Yes and no....  how's that for fence sitting.

Yes, absolutely there is a problem here with people completely disregarding their responsibilties.  I'm not sure where it comes from.  Partially I find that the above is true.  I have seen many examples of people knowing that they have rights, and demanding them, but not having a clue about the responsibilities that go with them.   When I was in the navy, there was a lesson given to new sailors, Rights and Responsiblities, and they all heard the rights part, but completely forgot the responsibilities part.

I think that's typical of the American attitude in general.  But I'm not sure where it comes from.

I remember travelling in Europe when I was in the navy (20 years ago).   If you saw someone on the beach with a Walkman type radio (remember those?) it was most likely an American.  Personal space, public privacy,  these concepts are definatly examples of the "ME" attitude.  It's not exclusively American, but I think the Americans take it farther.

I think it sprang out of the 50's, and the baby boom generation.  I think after the war, the Americans experienced more prosperity than other groups, combined with more space, not being crowded by their neighbors, not having to reconstruct, etc, and therefore not experiencing the hardships that our European brothers and sisters did.

Each generation of parents since then wanting to make it better for their children, and financially better of than their own parents were, simply giving everything to their children, each generation of children growing up and not wanting to restrict their children the way they were "restricted".

I don't think any of this is uniquely American, but I think things have been carried farther over here.

Anyway, that's my theory.

OK- I'm getting WAY off topic here.  I think the we're really spoiling the h3ll out of our kids.  One radio advertisement really has my boxers in a bunch- there's an ad for a certain minivan and the kid runs away and lives with the neighbors because their minivan has dual DVD players, special movable seats/tables, etc.  The 'mom' says OK, we just bought 'that brand minivan, so Jimmy, please come home."  Really irriates the heck out me.  Now, I pretty much let my 16 y/o daughter do what she wants (within reason of course) such as have a cell phone, use the family car, etc, but- she has to work for it.  She gets straight A's in school, is a member of the National Honor Society, plays sports, and actually does a bunch of chores around the house.  She knows that if she messes up- the fun's over.  I can brag all I want about 'what a good kid I have', but I see a lot of parents who let the kids run the house, and not the adults.  OK- I'm off the soapbox now...  I hope I'm making sense 'cause I'm a little heavy into the Captain Morgan right now :P .

Wolfman and Road_Rascal,

I hear you loud and clear, Wolfman, you take a very diplomatic approach to a sensitive subject, and well done to you, you pick your words carefully I think.

In our cosy middle class world we too expect to "have it all" and feel we are "due" our material wealth....but that's all changing right now. Many here are shocked at how quickly the so called boom (aka "accumulating things"), has been undermined by other people's greed (bankers, traders etc). It's been a shocking few months here, watching prices rocket up, and values plunge downward. Everyone is beginning to feel the pinch, or so the media tells us. How much of that is hype I am not sure, except for those unfortunates who lose their jobs, of course. One thing for sure, everything we accepted as safe and secure, (jobs, property values, pension funds etc) is now not so safe. But there is little the ordinary man in the street can do about it, except get on with life, work and pray a little harder I guess.

Road_Rascal, you have developed Wolfman's point further. I too have two grown sons, still living at home, both at college. They push the envelope with us at times, but they know at heart we are proud of them. It is difficult trying to give them our values , when they are growing up and developing their own. We do not however play the "keeping up with the Jones's" game, we could not afford it anyway!!!

This is not where I thought the thread would go, but hey, it's good to talk!!!

Steve

It ain't kids that are trying to run me over. It's rednecks, old ladies and women on cell phones in their SUVs.

The most 'memorable' incident that I had happened the first year that I started riding. It was a beautiful fall day. Farmers were harvesting corn, the air was absolutely filled with smells of the fall, you know the kind of day.....

I was riding and just taking it all in, kind of pushing through the corners because it was just one of those days, when all of a sudden the curve was yellow with spilled corn. Let me tell you that a leaned over bike and lots of kernels of corn have a way of getting your full attention. I could feel the front wheel skip as the kernels popped out from under the tire. Didn't go down, but I did have to scrub the seat......

Fall is just ahead. Ride safe.

You forgot chrome fish people. ;):dude:

I have had way too many close calls that are not my fault, frequently people coming onto the freeway and immediately coming across the first lane into the second lane, which I am occupying. :whip:  It happens so often I am always watching for it.  Sometimes they stop when I blast the Stebel horn, and sometimes I have to brake hard to keep from being run over.

The one that really ticked me off the most though, happened last Summer.  I was in a round-a-bout on the inside of two lanes.  The exit coming up was setup so the outside lane had to exit and the inside lane could exit or go straight, and was clearly marked both on the street and with signs.  I wanted to exit but the car in the outside lane decided to go straight.  I had to bank hard to the left and then brake hard to keep from being run over, and blasted my horn at the same time.  The idiot in the car then shakes his fist at me and called me some name, don't remember what.  I then followed him to his destination a short distance away, McDonald's, to educate him.  Unfortunately he was too stupid to listen and I decided it was not worth it to drag his butt out of his car to the round-a-bout and stuff his nose on the right turn only arrow on the pavement that he couldn't see from his car, though I desperately wanted too. :cooldevil:

I had one about 2 weeks ago. It was a beautiful morning and I was just going up the street to the store. I didn't notice this Lincoln Continental (older) coming out of a parking lot on my right. When I did, I slammed on both brakes and got it down to a slow walk about 2 feet off his left front fender. I was in the left of two lanes and he had both lanes blocked. He got stopped and I was able to go around him in the turn lane. He looked totally shocked. He probably didn't appreciate what I called him as I went around him. I was a bit shook up for awhile. All I could think of was what the heck I was doing out there without my helmet! It hasn't happened (no helmet) since and won't again soon! Normally around here, there isn't much problem. It's one reason I like living here. The traffic is laid back and pretty good. There are a lot of bikes, so the cage drivers are used to seeing us.
