This thread irritates me because of the salesman aspect that started it. I think the responses have been great and positive and encouraging of sticking with the proper gear.  I commend the the topic starter for asking the question here and having the sense to to know he was being given some sort of bs line.  Gear works - it is better than the alternative....... to drive the point home let's review....

This is very true. I made the mistake last 4th of July of going "just 8 miles" home on a hot day in just jeans and a light sweatshirt, gloves, boots, helmet.  I hope no one here ever experiences how bad a call this can be.

I had Tourmaster "mesh" gloves - which I still recommend.  The leather on the palms wore through.  Although my takedown was at about 60 mph by a road raged cager - I hate to think what "could have been" - although I do - often. 8 days in the hospital on IV antibiotics to ward off infection and 2 months of bandaging and healing to be mobile again. Now I try to ALWAYS have some sort of protection - Kevlar lined Jeans, kevlar shirt; Ballistic nylon overpant and Jacket with pads.  I do like the look of the all season Fieldsheer Jacket I saw on this thread - I'll check it out for our trip later this summer - we'll be seeing rain - maybe even snow -  to high temp desert along the way.  I just ordered 2 more pair of Kevlar lined jeans.  Here is the result of going down on pavement - some due to not wearing protecting equipment:

Arm

Upper back:

Legs:

Butt wounds:

This one still has layers of tarmac in it.

You all are wise to be sure you and your loved ones wear proper gear - which includes the ballistic nylons and pads.

Blackdog,

I too went down on the freeway at 60 mph Jan 10, 2008.

I was more fortunate than you in the skin department. Was wearing Joe Rocket full ballistic jacket and pants.

Bad side tho: helmet came off and suffered 3 concussions because of that.

Temporal, basal, and frontal.

Still on light duty, and will be forever according to the doctor yesterday...

Sorry to hear that AZgl1500 - I had a bad concussion once - don't wish it on anyone - messed my head up good for about 6 weeks - another story for another time - but it was bad.  Hope you are recovering OK hopefully the helmet too the main blow before it came off.

This is why the sales guy downplaying the effectiveness of a competitors product irritates me. We should all wear as much gear as we can - always.  Each individual needs to decide what they can - but we don't need some sales fool diminishing the importance of it just to make a sale.  It is hard enough to get folks to dress for safety as it is.  And in your state - helmetless is "cool" - except for me.  Now that I'm used to a full-faced I'll never go back - feel a bit naked without it

I fully agree on wearing the helmet. No matter how hot, or how stinky that helmet got, I always wore it. It was a full face HJC flip front. It was still locked in place when it was recovered though a bit banged up. Plastic face shield was gone, but my nose is still in one piece.

Just have a discolored stripe up my nose to the top of my eyelashes where the chin strap was pulled up and off my head with being unbuckled. :(

I feel naked without my riding protection. I came out of my "off experience" without skin abrasions or broken bones. I attribute that to wearing good riding gear.

I agree with everyone's thoughts. I'm working on scrounging up the funds for some pants SOON. I wear chaps now & while they look cool/spiffy there is no protection for my butt which is where most of the mentioned asphalt sliding takes place. I'm one of those guys who feels nekkid without all the (IMHO) required gear being in place.
As far as John being a little different "upstairs" before & after his "thrill ride" I really didn't notice much difference. John is John is John. Always has been, always will be.

Olive Oyl wanted a Mesh, armoured jacket last summer.

I think she has a Fieldsheer with a removable rain/heat liner & loves the flow & reflective silver color.

She can't wear it over 95* though.

Evaporative vest!  They work great in those high temps.
