And then I need someone with one who can give me the particulars on the gear connector. Once I have that it should be a piece of cake. Depending on what is there and how to get at it, of course. I didn't know you had room for one more LED on your wonder horse.

Has anyone here fitted the Smartlite yet? I'd like to read the feedback before I buy one. I was going to buy a new Wing this year but backed off with the way things are going around me. My son Jim had his work hours and pay cut and I guess it would be a tad selfish of me to buy a new Goldwing when I might need the money to help my son, so I'll settle for a few extras for the Wing I have now.

I got to now where I don't even look at the spot below the dash were it is mounted, instead I see it in the windshield. I have not taken off in the wrong gear sense I've had it. I have not been in the wrong gear at all. I am now waiting for additional modules now for the unit with honest excitement. Well, I had the occasion to swing by Rudy's place last week and he had a Smartlite ready for me. I got it installed and I LOVE IT! Installation was simple and the instructions were easy to follow. The toughest part is getting to the gear indicator cable, but even that only took about 1/2 hour. You can drill the hole for the LED by hand with an ordinary drill bit. No trouble at all. All components are "Plug and Play", so no splicing. No more continuous checking if you are in 1st gear at a stoplight. The light tells you that you are in first. If you are accidently in 2nd, it tells you that too. No more pulling off in the wrong gear and looking like a jackass in front of a parking lot full of folks! We all know how fun that is. I really like the security function. When the key is off, the LED blinks like an alarm system, which serves to keep curious folks from messing with your ride. Always a plus in my book. If you have a charging problem, the light lets you know that as well. This function is evident when you switch the key on before you start the bike. The LED blinks rapidly because it detects that the bike is not charging. Once you start the bike, it goes off to let you know the charging system is working normally. If, for any reason, the bike stops charging it will let you know. That way, you can start to handle the problem before you run your battery dead on the road in the middle of nowhere. All in all, this is a GREAT addition to your 1500. Helpful, inexpensive, and easy to install and use. It gets the "REDNECK SEAL OF APPROVAL"! Here are some pictures I took during installation; This is what comes in the pack, first the control unit, with the diode which you connect across the two accessory terminals... ![]() ...the wire for the gear indicator which goes down through the fairing and into the connector on top of the right radiator fan... ![]() ...the LED for the dash... ![]() ...the light-senstive LED for dimming the main dash LED at night... ![]() ...and the fused power wire and ground; ![]() --------------------------------------- Now for installation. Run the gear indicator wire down through the side of the fairing. You will need to remove the lower right side fairing panel and seperate instructions for that can be found in the carb balancing tutorial on this page; http://www.goldwingfacts.com/1500balancecarbs.htm You don't need to remove the top console to run the wires to the dash and right side, you can fish them through with a coat hanger or long cable tie when the time comes for this. ![]() Here is the gear indicator wire ready to plug into the block on top of the right side radiator fan (fan removed here so I could get the camera in... ![]() ..and the lower right connector is the one you want... ![]() ...here it is hooked up... ![]() ...and back in place. ![]() Drilling the hole for the dash LED; ![]() The connector is too big to fit through the drilled hole. You can either cut the wires from the LED so they will pass through the hole you drilled in the dash, or pry them out of the connector like I did and feed them through the hole before putting them back into the connector; ![]() I taped the gear indicator and LED wires to a long cable tie and pulled them through the side of the console, which means I didn't have to remove the console; ![]() A look at the gear indicator wire coming up from the lower right side... ![]() ...and the wires from the LED. Make sure they have some slack and are taped out of harms way; ![]() This is Rudy's Smartlight connected up and velcroed to the tank... ![]() ...and connected to the battery; ![]() Secure the light-sensitive unit to the frame... ![]() ...so that it peeps out a little bit from the side panel and can detect the available light (or lack of it); ![]() This is the diode connected to the ACC terminals (this picture courtesy of Rudy); ![]() That's it, you are done!

wingnut wrote: Here are some pictures I took during installation; When I sent those units to Steve, I had not yet discovered a problem that I inadvertently created with the LED mounts. I sent the LED with the clip and ring already attached. Seemed logical enough at the time because I had been handling these things for years and it never occurred to me that most others had not. That is until one of my customers contacted me and requested a replacement LED. He said that he could not cram the LED through the hole and trying to do so had pulled the leads off of the LED itself. Then it hit me, he (and most) wouldn't realize that they needed to remove the clip from the LED before trying to assemble the thing. Worse, they wouldn't know how to get the clip off of the LED properly. In this case he was holding the wires while trying to pull the clip off the LED. Bad part is, the clip wraps each leg around the bottom of the LED so unless he knew to spread ALL 4 legs at the same time, the LED would not come free. Also the frail wires were not up to the task of being pulled much. Steve's solution of removing the pins from the connectors worked for him but it is not recommended because most can't get those out without damaging them. And that is another point where one could break the wires trying. Since the problem was realized (by me) we have been shipping the LEDs with the clip and ring attached by means of a loose tie-wrap rather than snapping the clip on the LED. The steps should be... 1. Drill the hole 2. Cut the tie-wrap free from the LED, clip and ring. 3. Slide the ring over the led and down the wire. 4. Snap the clip into the hole in the dash. 4. Insert the LED into the clip from the BOTTOM and snap into place. 5 Slide the ring over the clip on the bottom. Hope that makes it easier for folks in the future. Rudy, I know somewhere here you mentioned about doing this for the 12' & maybe even lower but how can that work if there is no gear indicator to start with?

Hi Angela, The 1200's actually do have a gear selector switch, just not all of them have gear indicators, except of course for the Neutral and OD lights, which are controlled by that gear selector switch. fysty-1 wrote: Rudy, I know somewhere here you mentioned about doing this for the 12' & maybe even lower but how can that work if there is no gear indicator to start with? Bikes that don't have enough gear wires coming out of the engine area are not suitable for gear indication. 1200's have two different types in this regard... ones that are short on wires that are not suitable for gear indication and another type that have enough wires but already have gear indications on the LCD displays and therefore don't need a SmartLight 'Gearhead' type of monitor. As a result, the 'Gearhead' series will be limited to the GL1500 and soon, the GL1800. This shortage of useful gear wires also applies to the GL1000s and the GL1100s. For the non-gear able bikes, we have been trying to get another version designed and produced so that the side stands could be monitored for up / down status. We call that version the SmartLight 'Sidestand' series (for obvious reasons). This product is held up right now because I'm not finding the switch I want for the side stand yet. But this is an important safety feature for those without side stand safety lockouts. We also wanted a low cost unit specifically designed for travelers who really need system electrical monitoring and some help with casual 'visitors' while the bikes were parked. In other words "keep me running when I am and keep everyone away when I'm not" kind of a philosophy. We also wanted this product to install quickly and on ANY bike or other 12v charging system. So that is where SmartLight is right now. SmartLight 'Gearhead' series for the GL1500 is available now and in stock. SmartLight 'Traveler' series for any 12v motorcycle is available now and in stock. The rest of the SmartLights are not out the door quite yet. Hope that helps.

OK I'll just shutup now. I forgot there was a part number difference on the switch on the Interstate & Standard vs the Aspy. If you changed the switch out to an Aspy switch it should work though I think. John

Yes you could install the gear switch from one of the versions that had a 1200 gear display into one that didn't we could make the 'Gearhead' version work on it but you would be removing the front engine cover to do it and gaskets would also be involved. But yes, it could be done if desired.
